Bridget Cosgrove, Ballyfeeny, County Roscommon.

My great grandparents, Elizabeth Ryan and John Rattigan's, marriage record lists Bridget Cosgrove, Ballyfeeny, as a witness. As Elizabeth Ryan's mother's maiden name was also Cosgrove, I suspect Elizabeth and Bridget were 1st cousins. I have found Bridget in Ballyfeeny in both Census's of Ireland. Her parents were John and Catherine Cosgrove and she had a sister Minnie (I believe she was christened Mary Ann in 1882) and a niece Margaret Mary Smyth, born about 1908.

I'm interested in learning more about these Cosgrave's and in particular, my great great grandmother who was also a Bridget Cosgrove and I believe a sister of this John Cosgrove. I know nothing about my Cosgrove ancestors.

Thank you.

Looking for information on Daniel Cosgrove who married Mary Hayes and Mary Stewart. I don't have any dates for this Daniel but I think he lived in Tipperary/Limerick in Ireland. His son Michael Cosgrove emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s, I would like to find descendants of these people and try and go back further. Thank you for your help, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello, I am looking for information on my family.

My great grandfather was Patrick Joseph Cosgrove. From what I've collected, he was born somewhere in Mayo County, Ireland around 15 Aug 1889. He immigrated to Hartford, CT and died there around 26 Nov 1976. He married Anna O'Brien and had 6 kids (John, Anthony, Joseph, Noreen, Patricia, and Teresa).

My grandfather, John, doesn't remember that much about him and I wanted to find out more about him and his parents.

Dear Robert..I don't know of how my Cosgrove's might be related to the Flanaghans but in my family there was a Stella Cosgrove born around 1887 in New York. She married an Edward Breslin who was listed as a plumber in the 1930 census. They had a son also named Edward who was 8 years old in the 1930 census. Stella is not a common name especially when you put it with Cosgrove so I am hoping we could be connected somehow. Stella was the youngest sibling. Her other older sibs were Mary, Margaret, Walter, William and Gertrude. Her sister Mary married a man with the last name of Fitch. William married Lizzie Cavanaugh. I think Margaret married but I don't know who and there is one sibling I have not been able to identify because the sib wasn't living at home in the 1900 census. Is this the time frame you are talking about? It would be so wonderful if your Flanaghans were married to the missing sibling!!!
Joann

I am the grandson of Thomas J. Flanagan (jun1893-Oct1944). I can't find much about him, but I know we are related to a Cosgrove family in Philadelphia. He served in the USN for 30 years. He had at least one sister named Sarah Flanagan. He had two daughters (Elisbeth (Betty Graham) & Catherine (Fritz, Zalenski). I also know that one member of that Cosgrove family was a nun (maybe a Pat?). I also think there was a Stella Cosgrove? Can any Cosgrove that is related to a Flanagan please contact me?

Hi Anthony,

You are correct about Patrick having a wife prior to marrying Bridget (nee Philbin). He married Ellen Walsh in 1894. She died sometime before 1901, but I do not know when. They had one daughter, who was my grandmother's half-sister. As you point out she lived with her grandparents, but her name was Agnes, not Bridget. She emigrated to the US in 1912 and lived with her mother's sister, Nora who was married to Luke Kilgallon and lived in Far Rockaway, NY. In adulthood Agnes lived with her cousin John Kilgallon. They never married or had children. As an interesting aside John was sent to Ireland in his late teens by his father and got mixed up with the IRA. He was sentenced to be executed, before American pressure on Britain led to his release. Before my mother died I told her this story and she said she he was a quiet and peaceful man and did not seem to be a fighter. I never met John, he died before I was born, but I did know Aunt Agnes before she died. Of course, I was too young to ever think about asking of family history.

Regards,
Greg

Greg

I was about to email you the link to the 1911 census when I got this new email from you.

Did you notice in the 1911 census that Michael Gouldin (Stepfather) ws living with Patrick? The name could be Goldin in the earlier census.

If you look in the 1901 census MIchael Goldin is in Tullynahoo of the right age and living with his wife Mary. I am assuming that she is Mary Cosgrove / nee Reilly.

They have a granddaughter living with them in 1901 - Bridget Cosgrove. Given your belief that Patrick - Son of Michael Cosgrove and Mary Reilly only had one son Patrick - then Bridget must have been a daughter of Patrick and his first wife who went to live with her grandmother ( a practice which was not unusual) She was 5 in 1901.

Interestingly there is a Bridget Gavin listed as a servant of a Maggie Cosgrove in 1911. Maggie / Margaret lives in the villge of Castlecrunnoge which is also listed in the DED of Brackloon. She is 15 years of age. I am assuming this is same girl. What happened after that I do not know,

In the 1901 census there is also a Bridget Cosgrove from Brackloon - listed in the Workhouse returns for Swinford, She is age 40 and listed as a servant and unable to do her work. Her illness is listed as Epilepsy. She may also be related.

At that time people in this area were buried in Kinaffe cemetry and there is a strong possibility that the names you need are on some list for this cemetry (ie for Patric and Bridget)

I am not sure if this is more helpful for you...

In relation the Margaret Cosgrove who is related to me - she Married Thomas Gavin in 1854 and they lived in the village of Rooskey Swinford where they would have rented a farm. Later they bought land in the nearby townland of Newwpark - this would have been under the Irish Land Commission times. Their decendents - 4 generations on, still live on this farm. This is the family line I am linked to. My father was born on this farm in Newpark. Three generations of the decendents of Thomas and Margaret emigrated to Philadelphia. We believe some also went to England in the earlier generatons and I am traceing a Thomas Gavin in Durham in England. The most recent generaton have not emigrated.

I am still trying to trace other members of the Cosgrove Family - I believe there was a Frances (Male) and a Nora Cosgrove as well.

MAny thanks
Anthony

Hi Anthony,

My grandmother (Margaret in the 1911 census) and her siblings all emigrated to the US, except for Michael who died as a child. There is an "Annie" on the 1911 census but I don't know who she is. My grandmother mentioned her brother Michael, but no recollection of her mentioning Annie.

I believe Patrick died in Tullinahoo as did his wife Bridget, something between 1920 and 1930, but I don't know for sure. My grandmother once told me that she was orphaned and went to live with an uncle in England before coming to the US, but she said little else of her parents except that her father had gone blind at sometime in his life.

I think Michael had a brother named Patrick who married Mary Mannion in 1865, but I would need to verify that.

I can't find a Loughlin Cosgrove on any document except Griffith's Valuation. Michael and Mary's birth certificate list his father's name as "Lackey Cosgrove." That of course is some sort of typo or nickname.

Sometimes the documents list the name as Cosgrave.

Did your Margaret and Thomas and their 9 children stay in Tullinahoo?

Regards,
Greg

Margaret Cosgrove - From Swinford in Mayo, Ireland

Looking for information on the Cosgrove Family from Swinford (also known as Swineford) or parish name of Kilconduff, in COunty Mayo, Ireland.

My Great Great Grandmother was Margaret Cosgrove. I believe her siblings were Patrick Cosgrove, Thomas Cosgrove, frances Cosgrove (male), Nora Cosgrove (may be sisterinlaw).

These family members were in Swinford in Mayo in the period 1850 - 1870. They seem to have emigrated from Swinford after that as they dod not show up in the 1901 Irish Census.

There is one theory that sone of them could have emigrated to County Durham in England. Other members of my family emigrated to Philadelphia and there is also a possibility that they too sent there.

Many one with COsgrove family members from Swinford?

Many thans
Anthony Gavin

The Michael and Bridget Family are listed in the Irish Census of 1911. I have attached the link below.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Brackl...

You will notice that there is a Michael Gouldin (I thin it could be Goldin) age 72 listed as a Stepfather - normally the relationships are to the head of the household. I therefore assume that Patrick's Father Michael died young and his mother remarried.

Many thanks
Anthony

My father and I are compiling a family tree and history of the Gavin and Campbell (Caffle) Families from Swinford, The Gavins originated from Tullinahoo and the Caffles lived in the nearby village of Curryane.

The name of Anthony Campbell passes through to the present generation.

I am particularly interested in seeing if there is any connections between the Campbells mentioned in your mail and the famillies we are researching.

My Great Great Grandmother was Margaret Cosgrove from Tullinahoo. My Great Grandmother was Mary Campbell from Curryane and my Grand mother was Nellie Campbell from the same villge.

Do you know did they both live in the area?

I have a Mary Campbell Born in the 1830 / 1840s but had not an exact date - she married a Ned Gallagher.

I wonder is this the same Mary Campbell.

By the way - the area that they lived in was an Irish Speaing village and the Caffle was a phonetic spelling of the Irish name.

Many thanks
Anthony

My great great grandmother was Margaret Cosgrove. We believe that she came from Tullinahoo as my great great grandfather was Thomas Gavin from Tullinahoo. They were married in 1854. Margaret was born about 1834 and married in 1854. she died in 1875. Margaret and Thomas had 9 children.

A number of Cosgroves names appear as godparents for Thomas and Margaret's children - including Patrick, Thomas, Frances (male) and Nora.

According to the Griffiths Valuation - which listed all tenants in Ireland there is a Loughlin Cosgrove as renter in Tullinshoo at this time.

Where did your Michael Cosgrove live?

Did they stay in Tullinahoo or emigrate?

It would appear that the Cosgroves moved out of the Swinford area as there are few names in the area in the 1901 census.

Do you think your Michael could be of the same family?

Many thanks
Anthony Gavin

Well I feel your pain! I also have a lost John Cosgrove but mine was born in Boston MA in 1838 and then moved to New York City and married a Mary Ann. They had children Mary, William,Walter, Margaret, Gertrude and Stella plus at least 1 more that I don't have a name for. Anyway the family settled finally in Philadelphia. John died at some point between the time they lived in New York and 1890 when MAry Ann is listed as a Widow in Phila city directory. Where did your Cosgrove family live? You don't mention in your note where they lived. Did they stay in Liverpool? Part of the problem of finding a John is that the name was so common that every search turns up a bunch of them and it is difficult to sort them out! I would be happy to help you if I can.
Joann

I am trying to find out if the John A Cosgrove buried in 1887 in New Cathedral cemetery is the John A Cosgrove I am searching for. He is buried in a plot owned by Henry Anderson and buried with him are two little children. John Harding age 5 died Jan of 1878 and an Edward Harding age 6 died in 1880. I looked up their death certificates at Family Search and found they are the children of Michael Harding and Ellen who lived on 712 Richmond Street in Philly. I still have no way to connect with any Cosgrove's. Does anyone out there have any Hardings in your family that would connect with the Cosgrove's? So I can confirm whethter or not this John is mine? Thanks Oh any Anderson connections would also help!

Well I did more searching today and came upon the Death notice for Joseph J Cosgrove. It was in the Phila Inquirer on May 3rd 1904. Here it is
Cosgrove - Suddenly
Joseph J husband of Kate Cosgrove nee Hennessy. Age 28 years. The relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Wed morning at 8:30 o'clock from his late residence on League St. High requiem mass at St Phillip's Church at 10 o'clock. Internment at Holy Cross cemetery.

Also on April 29th there was a small article
Injured Man Dies in Hospital Ward
An unidentified man, said to be a stevedore, was found unconscious last night on the Washington Ave docks of the Delaware river with his skull fractured, his right jaw broken and his face and body badly cut and bruised. He was taken to St Agnes Hospital, where he died an hour later. Mystery surrounds the death of the man, which police are trying to penetrate, that he was the victim of an assault the police believe, but have no clue to the identity of his supposed assaulters.

Wow so then the coroner decided it was an accident but who really knows what happened! Such a tragedy!
Joann

I was searching through the Phila Death Certs on Familysearch.org and came upon the one for Joseph J Cosgrove your GGGrandpa. It says he died from an accident on Pier 53 South Wharton St from the parting of a chain. It occurs to me there should be a coroners report that might give his parents names or even a small article in the newspaper on April 29th 1904. He died on the 28th at St Agnes hospital. Have you ever searched for them?
Joann

I wonder if any of the 18 Cosgrove children moved to the Allegany MD area and then had a child that would eventually be a grandparent to a girl named Catherine...born about 1866 and died in 1904...I am desperately seeking information on her...she married my great-grandfather Patrick Cullen...in 1890...does any of this ring a tiny bell for anyone? Some of their children...including my grandfather, made their way to Baltimore as well...
Any lead at all would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks, Melinda

Hi, my ancestor is Joseph Cosgrove born circa 1730. He was married to Mary North and had 18 children. Supposedly he was a farmer in Monmouth County but there were no deeds in his name. His house burned down and then he moved to Baltimore City, MD where his daughters were living. He died at around 90 yrs old.
I think Mary North was born on Apr 1, 1734 in Farmington, Conn.
I see that you posted this years ago, so hopefully we can get in touch.
