Hi.....I'm commenting on the AZZARITO line in Haverhill, MA.

This might help for folks tracing the various branches of AZZARITI.

From http://www.cognomiitaliani.org/cognomi/cognomi0001v.htm
AZZARITA ~ AZZARITI ~ AZZARITO
(translation)
AZZARITA is very rare in Molfetta, Bari. AZZARITI, significantly more diffuse; with a strain in Corato and Bari, in Rome, and a very small branch in Catanzaro. AZZARITO has a strain in Foggia and Brindisi, and one strain, the most consistent, in San Pietro a Maida in Catanzaro. The various forms may result from ethnic-ita,-iti,-ito, referring to the many countries called ASAR in Turkey, near the Black Sea: but according to another hypothesis would derive from the medieval "azzaro" ( meaning "steel" ) to indicate the profession of blacksmiths, armorers, or metal foundries."

I'm descended from the Azzariti family in Massachusetts. We are from Troia, Prov. of Foggia, Puglia.

The Azzarito line in Haverhill, MA is not related to the Azzariti line from Boston. According to a WW I Draft Registration card for Domenico Azzarito of Haverhill, MA, Domenico states that he was born "Catanzaro" so placing the Haverhill Azzarito line in San Pietro de Maida sounds correct.
Hello Dan - I have recently joined Ancestry.com and ran into your message board posting. I am a member of the Vota family and have been pursuing my ancestors for some time now. I believe I have some information that you may be interested in. Would you have an email address we could correspond with one another through? I can be reached at votaville@consolidated.net. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, MV

I just came across this posting. I'm just starting to research my maternal grandmother's history. I have very sketchy info about her. She was born in Lentini, Sicily, 1906 and went by the name of Rose Constantino, and then Rose Guido (married to Frank Guido). I don't know if this is the same Rosa Costantino of which you write. Note that my spelling has an additional 'n' in the name. I know her family settled in Council Bluffs. and she had at least 2 siblings, one of whom was named Jimmy. Rose died in 1990 and was buried in Council Bluffs or Omaha. My cousin has much more info on her, but he's been really sick lately and i don't know if i can get the info from him. I would love to get any info from you you have and likewise, i can share what paltry info I have.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks!

Patti H

I am looking for any information on him and his family. I have found out that the name was changed to Coston somewhere on down the line once he got here to the States. From what I have found out through research is that he came over here with his brothers? I haven't been able to find much. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!

Honestly I don't know.

My grandmother died before I was born and all I know about her was that she had been married before the marriage to my grandfather.

Pietor arrived in 1906 on the Bretagne. I believe somehow they are related to the Vota and perhaps Coello families as well.

The only reason I was researching the Costantino family was to try and find my grandmother's birth location so I can send off for her baptismal or birth acts. But no luck.

Incredible coincidence! We may not be related but...my grandfather, Giovanni Costantino was born in Favria in 1876. His brother, Domiziano Pietro Costantino was born in Favria in 1885! Both settled in California. Giovanni came through New York in 1912 and Pietro came via Costa Rica to San Francisco in 1916. Pietro never married. But the last name was changed to Constantino when they became citizens.

Do you know of any other ancestors from Favria? My great grandfather was Giovanni Antonio Costantino, also from Favria (1830-1906). Please reply.

Looking for info on Pietro Costantino/Constantino

Born 1885 I believe in Favria, Torino, Italy

He married a Mary Unk and resided in Tyrone Township, Franklin CO, Il. (Census 1910,20)
2 children were born
Sam 1909
Madeline 1918

WWI Reg shows him still in Franklin Co, Il in 1918.

Pietro (aka Peter) must have died because by 1930 census Mary had remarried my grandfather Francesco Cerutti and was living in Detroit (madeline was with them).

Desperately seeking Mary's maiden name and birth location in Italy.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dan

I believe you will find the Sgro's and Costantino's in the village of San Pietro a Maida in Catanzaro, Calabria. My grandfather was Domenico Costantino, son of Domenico and Marianna Magisano. There were 14 children in that family including one named Antonio but I know it's not your Antonio because I was told Antonio died in Philadelphia, Pa. before he even married. Francesco (Frank) lived in Philadelphia but traveled back and forth never establishing permanent residency in the US. Domenico, my grandfather, died in 1923, Giuseppe, Uncle Joe to us, lived with my family until his death in 1964. Angelina, married Francesco Azzarito and lived in Haverhill, Mass. She still has a daughter living in Mass. who married a first cousin, Giuseppe Azzarito. They are the only ones who came to America. We're probably connected two generations back if your family is from San Pietro a Maida.
Good luck in your research.
Carol

I am trying to find out if anyone knows any information on my great grandparents. Antonino (who is later known as Anthoni in the US) married Maria (also known as Carmela)Sgroi and came over to the US in 1910. Both were born in May, she in 1889(ish) and he in 1887(ish). It is believed that when the 2 married they lived in Catania (Linguaglossa, in Southern Italy). They moved to Albany, NY where they spent the rest of their lived except for. They moved to Boston for a short while (maybe 1915-ish) with his brother possibly named James where they worked in a factory?
In Albany Anthoni was a tailor who made suits for senators. and moved back to Albany about 1-2 years later. Maria and Anthoni had 5 children; Dominick, Josephine, James, Adelpho (Changed to Arthur and he went by Art) Lodovico (which was changed to Louis). Louis is my grandfather, he was in the Marine Corps in WWII although, I cannot find this record. He and his siblings have all deceased except for Dominick, he is the eldest. Louis settled in upstate New York, and had 2 children (my father Tony (Louis Anthony Jr.), and my Uncle Charles). I would like to find our lost lineage...

I don't think your grandfather actually changed his name. My grandfather was a Costantino, too, and my name was Constantine. During my research, I've discovered that the name was spelled according to what they heard. Think about it...the Italians dropped the vowels at the end of words so Costantino became Costantine. My father's birth record has his name as Costella and one of his sisters is spelled Costanaio. These people could not read or write so the names were spelled according to what they heard. My dad said they only knew Italian until they went to school.

I am looking for my Grandmother's uncle's family. (any descendants). What I have found is he left Lentini in 1907 and eventually his wife and children joined him in council bluffs, Iowa in 1913. Gaetano (Tom) Costantino and his wife Maria Innao (Mary). Mary came over with her children Nunziata, Alfia and rosa.

In 1920 per the census they were still in Council bluffs and now there were two more children, Frank and James. By the 1930 census, there is a Joe and a Jack as well. 8 children. I have been researching the family for quite awhile and have alot of information would love to share. Anyone with further information contact me.

I found some death records for a Joe, Frank and Rose that make sense and would place them in New Jersey eventually.

They were brothers and are both buried at Hole Sepulchre. You say he was 16, I haven't done much research on these brothers, but when I get home I will see what I can dig up. I have their names, but want to make sure get them right. I will follow-up later with at least the two names. Best of luck.

My grandfather's name was also Domenico Costantino but he was from the village of San Pietro a Maida. He came to America in 1901 and again in 1904 and stayed. He was born in 1877. Don't know if there's any connection. By the way, he had a sister Angela Costantino who lived in Haverhill, Massachusettes. My grandfather, Domenico, went to Philadelphia, then Hazleton, Pa, then to Moorestown, NJ and finally Delaware Twp, NJ (now Cherry Hill).
Carol

My grandfather was Salvatore Costantino who came to the US from Sicily. My father was Cosimo and he had 8 other siblings. My grandfather settled northeast of Philadelphia and from what I have learned died in Swedesboro, NJ.

I may have found the ship manifest identifying what ship my grandfather came to the US on from Sicily. Having troubling locating information about my grandfather and my grandmother (Maria) because most of my father's sibling who could have known about them have also died. My grandmother's maiden name was Ragusa.

I am seeking information on the family of Frank (Francesco), Maria and Angela Costantino. Francesco my GGF was born on March 11, 1873, we have no date of entry to the US. He is rumored to have arrived with his brother-in-law Antonio Italiano who was married to Maria. We are not sure when the name was changed to Constantino nor the reason for the change. He settled in Pennsylvania before moving out to Washington State. Francesco married Domenica Frisina who was born on August 10, 1877.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My ggf was Rocco Giovanni Costantino. He was born circa 1884 in Italy and died in 1926 in Wyoming. He was married to Appolonia Varello. If anybody has any information about him, I would appreciate a response.

Thanks
