After all this time I have very little new Costen information other than my James had a brother John and their parents were John & Hannah "Todd" Costen and the time frame is late 1700s-early 1800s. I don't have positive proof but these were the only Costens in Mecklenburg Co.,NC in the correct time frame. James & Susanna "Berryhill" Costen are last mentioned in Mecklenburg Co., about 1822 and I can't find any further records on them. I'm not familiar with Gates unless you are talking about Gates Co., NC? Is this where your Sarah and Fred were from? If your John is the brother of James I would like his family information. I will be glad to exchange info with you. Are you also researching Berryhills?

Hi! I too am looking for Costen Family information. My Great Grandmother was Sarah Costen and her brother Fred Costen...Sarah Costen was born about 1898 there were additinal siblings, but I'm still trying to find names..... I know they lived in Gates at the Costen Farm. Sarah and Fred were said to be children of John Costen.

An Elizabeth Coston, daughter of John Coston who lived in Onslow County, North Carolina, around 1770 was probably the wife of Silas Marchant of Newberry, South Carolina. Does anybody know for sure? Or have other information about her? Thanks.

We have a clipping from a 1938/9 Waterford newspaper. On the back is the following paragraph:

GOLDEN WEDDING

The congratulations and warm good wishes of many friends in Waterford and Tramore go out to Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Costen, Tramore, on the celebration of their golden wedding to-day. The event was observed quietly at their residence, only relatives and close personal friends being present. Mr. and Mrs. Costen were married in Peru, Illinois, where Mr Costen met his bride after four years' residence there.

The article seems to continue, but is cut off at this point.

This means they must have married about 1889.

I found the 1920 Jefferson Co, OK census.
Coston B Berryhill & Etta Berryhill were husband & wife in 1920.
He was 31 born in Texas, she 26 born in OK.
His father & mother were born in TX.
Her father was born in TX and mother in OK.
And he was a laborer working on state highway.
(source was rootsweb).

When was your Minnie Munds born? We have a Minnie M Munds born in 1928. She was the daughter of John Thomas Munds and Minnie Matilda Small. She had a younger sister Violet Nellie Munds born in 1931.

Minnie was actually the third child of John & Minnie Munds - they had 2 children (George & Beatrice) that ended up in Barnodos about the time that Minnie was born (1828).

John Thomas Munds died in 1949 in Sittingbourne district aged 71.

If this matches with your Minnie then are you sure that John Thomas Munds was from Germany? I have him as the 4th child of William and Eliza Munds from Lydd, Kent!!?

Hi there,
Just a long shot as I am new to this:-
My dad's parents were John & Minnie, Matilda (nee Small) Munds from the Isle of Sheppy. My great grandad was George (I think) from Lydd in Kent.
My dad and his sister (Beatie/Beatrix?) were taken as Bernado Children when my dad was about 4.
I was just trying to find out something....anything about my granddad & grandma.
I don't suppose anyone could help?

As i was looking on this board for something else i came across your message about MINNIE MUNDS. I was wondering if your Minnie MUNDS lived in Milton nr Sittingbourne Kent at some stage. As my father also lived in this area.
Ive been collecting some information on my family history and my father used to live across the road from Minne MUNDS. It just seems strange that you have a Minnie MUNDS as i find that this name is not that common.

Dont you think this is a small world !!!! My father lived in Kingsmill road Milton, Bridge Street Milton and Court Road Milton. He was one of 12 children. His mother was (MAUD) Elsie Maud GOODWIN and his father was (JIM) James William MAJOR. Some of his brothers and sisters still live in Milton or around the Sittingbourne area. My father David MAJOR now lives in Newington nr Sittingbourne Kent. He remembers your mother living across the road from him when he was about 7 . So i think he was living in Bridge Street at the time. At the time he didnt remember her having any children ( or none that he knew of)

I named my son costen after my great-grandmother, Hattie Ethel Berryhill. Her mother's family name(maiden) name was costen. My great-grandmother was raised at the "costen home." My greatgrndmother's grandfather was named James Costen. they were from mackinzie tennessee, north of memphis. i don't know if this will help. I do think it is interesting that you have both the names berryhill and Costen. We are not, however, african american. i can try to find out more information if you need it. merry christmas and god bless.

Hi, I was just browsing around when I came upon your message about Minnie Munds.George and Minnie were my parents and they did indeed live in Milton, in Meads Avenue where I was brought up.I'm curious to Know who your dad was as I must have known him.Munds is a German name,her father came to England when he was a child .Her mother then married a Sanderson after her father died but every one knew her as Minnie Munds a name that was shared with my mum.

I wish I had more answers for you. I'm only 18 years old and my oldest relative (without alzheimer's) does not like to talk about our ancestors very much. I'm working on him though. If I find out anything else you all will be the first to hear about it. I will be sure to bring up Myles and his sister in my next conversation with my closer and older relatives. I'm not sure that I can help you. The majority of my family is from N.C. However there are many of us in VA and those of us that are in NC are very close to the border of VA. I don't know much about my father's side (the costens), but I do hope that I can help you. If we're who you are looking for, there a lot of us.

Thanks for your reply. I know of some relatives in North Carolina named Arthur Aaron Costen (spelled with an e in Costen) He was my Great Grandfather. My grandfather was Myles Henry Richard Costen. Mother Sarah Costen. I don't know much about him. He was married to a Emily Foster in Connecticut or Boston.

I would love to learn of any connection there might be to this family line, or maybe you have other information that might be helpful.

Eastern shore in across Chesapeake Bay from Nansemond Co. The Costen I am looking for is caucasian as far as my information is stating. Still could be connection but don't know.

Thanks for the reply. Gertrude Virginia Costen is buried in Nansemond co, Cedar Hill Cemetary. Unfortunately I have no other information about her except for the dates b 5-18-1901 d. 4-9-1968. Does this match with anything you have. I don't know what city/county she was from.Gertrude and Lewis Randolph Johnson Had 4 children Nellie May, William E. Marion, and Emma. Do you have anything else about her and/or her parents. She has become a brickwall for me.

My research shows that the name derives from one of William the Conqueror's henchmen Henri de Cotentin - that is spelt with a circonflex accent over the O in French to indicate a missing "s" (historical derivation). The name Costen is found in records in UK with the same spelling as far back as 1152.

Thanks for posting the message regarding Costen family. My sisters (2) and I are interested in learning about the family tree and connections thereto. My great-grandfather was Arthur Aaron Costen, I believe he was born in Virginia and returned there when he retired, but spent most of his life in Conn. Do you or any of your older relatives know of this person? He had one son Myles (deceased) and a daughter Barbara (now age 93) who spent their lives in Conn.

As can be seen below, Matthias & Elizabeth Riggin Costen had daughters Mary, Esther, and Comfort. Mary was married to Abraham Taylor, however I have seen her listed as the wife of a Benjamin Simpson. Does anyone have information which would show her married 1st to Benjamin Simpson, and 2nd to Abraham Taylor. Did she have a son, Benjamin Simpson (d.1834)?

she is listed with her younger brother Myles - as a granddaughter, in the household of Benjamin FOSTER.

There are many other household members and grandchildren listed. She and Myles are the only grandchildren who are listed as father born North Carolina. Their mother is listed as born in Connecticut.
