Graham,
I have emailed my spreadsheets to you at grahamcoster@btinternet.com.
I'm not sure but I think Thomas and Anne were married at St George, Mayfair Westminster London on 19 Jul 1747.
All those baptised 23 Jan 1684 were of the same family, father Thomas Costard mother not listed. Mother wouldn't have been dead at that stage as she had 2 more children.
Thomas B:23/12/1676,
Alice B:12/11/1679,
male B:1682 & Buried 17/1/1682,
Elizabeth B:30/7/1683,
Mary B:12/1/1684,
William B:abt 1686 & Buried:19/9/1742 (Sarratt),
John B:abt 1688 & Buried 4/4/1719 (Sarratt).

Regards
Margaret

Margaret

Benjamin's brother Thomas was born 7 June 1716 and was christened 9 September 1721 along with Benjamin, their three brothers and sisters. I was amazed to find them altogether and with dates of birth. Do you know where your Thomas was christened and married? My Thomas and Benjamin were christened in Sarratt where they did not keep marriage records from 1732/3 to 1755. I believe Benjamin married in Sarratt, where his first son was christened in 1750.

Also do you know the parish in which William and Thomas were christened? I have some christeings of Costard in Rickmansworth with dates of birth in 1679-1684. The names are Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary and another name I cannot read from the microfilm. They were baptised on 23 January 1684. There does not appear to be a mother's name, maybe she had died before the christenings? The writing is poor. I plan to view the actual register. Another group of Coster's with dates of birth all baptised together!

Graham

Graham,
Well things are really starting to move along. I have Thomas GGGG Grandfather B:1710-1725 M: 1747 Anne Woodbridge, I think possibly that it his Chr:7/6/1716 so this would make him the brother of Benjamin.
I will email you my spreadsheets. I haven't married my family sheet into that of Benjamin's as yet.
William Costard B: 1686 father is Thomas B:1650 don't have a mothers name.
Regards
Margaret Coster
mumcoz@iinet.net.au
Well I have cetainly had a week for family history. Yes Ramon I have had communication with both Graham and Mike Coster.
I feel that we are related but not as brother of Solomon but of Benjamin (his father). I have 2 Thomas's 1 B: 1748 M Sarah Harding in 1783 and his father Thomas B: abt 1710-1725. This is the Thomas that I feel we are related through Chr:7/6/1716, brother of Benjamin. I remember seeing John's arrival as an assisted migrant Sep 1855 on the Cairngorm. He settled in Carngham where our Great Grandfather had also settled in 1852.
If you wish I could email you my spreadsheets.
Kind regards
Margaret Coster
mumcoz@iinet.net.au

Margaret

I have James and Ann in the information I have collected from the prish records. I do not have a link to my part of the Coster family yet.

I have James as the 6th child of Joseph and Hannah Sharp, Joseph's parents were Thomas and Sarah Harding and Thomas' parents were Thomas and Anne.

I have recently found a Thomas born in 1716, he might be the Thomas that married Anne. I might never know as Thomas was born in Sarratt which did not keep marriage records foe 22 years.

If Thomas and Anne is the same as Thomas born in 1716 then we are related as Thomas' brother was Benjamin, until recently the furthest i had gone back. I now know their parents William and Elizabeth m 1709.

I am planning another visit to the records office soon and will let you know what I find.

Can you let me know what you have found?

Graham

Margaret we must be related. Your Thomas Coster had a brother Solomon and I am a descendant of his.
Margaret,

Thanks for your mail. I shall have another study of the list of your line that was sent to Rosemary but I think the link is probably way back.

It is possible that the Thomas Coster at the top of your list (married Anne Woodbridge) is the brother of Benjamin Coster b 1720 whom I am descended from.

Benjamin's siblings (only just recently found after some local primary research by Graham Coster) were: William b1710, Elizabeth b 1712, John b1714, Thomas b1716, Joseph b1718.
All were the children of William Costern b1686 and Elizabeth Baldwin.

All can be seen on my public tree 'Coster'

So if your records show that Thomas has a brother called Benjamin then it could be a match.

our address is 27 Hunters Crescent, Totton, Southampton, SO40 7FA, UK.

Kind Regards

Mike

There were siblings are

It seems so close yet not quite. My Joseph had kids b in Marylebone 1821-38, the first son was called Thomas, which would logically be the GF name. I have Sarah on the 1841 census as w of Joseph but her death is recorded a few months after. Hannah pops up at the death of Joseph in 1849 but not heard of before or after. They're out there somewhere.... Cheers Pete

Hello Pete,
Have only just read your message. Our family has Joseph COSTER & Hannah SHARP (G G GRANDFATHER). Joseph was christened 8/7/1783 in Rickmansworth (parents Thomas COSTER & Sarah HARDING).
The witnesses to Joseph's marriage are listed as a John Morris & Sarah Fowler.
All Joseph's children (7) were born in Hertfordshire. No 6 (James B: 8/12/1824) is our G GRANDFATHER and he married Ann Sophia HUMPHREYS 17/6/1849 in West Hyde, Herts. They emigrated to Australia on the 'Isle of Skye' which departed from the UK 27/7/1852 and arrived in Geelong AUST 12/12/1852.
Hope this may help you.
Regards
Margaret Coster

Maragaret,

I have details of your lineage along the Coster line and some family history relating to the Costers that first came to Oz. It came to me via a cousin of my Brisbane who in turn had been speaking with a Maurice Coster who will be somewhere in you line. I expect you know of him?

Anyway If it is of any interest I can mail you what I have here. I would be interested to find the connection between yours and my Coster lines. I am convinced there is a link. I also have two marriages between Costers and Humphreys in my line so the families were clearly very close.

Kind Regards
Mike Coster
Southampton, UK

Graham,

I read your message with great interest. It must have been a very rewarding experience for you to come up with this information first hand. Thanks for sharing it on the message board.

I believe now that I have found the link between us and it goes back some. I have found John Coster 27.11.1759 to be my 4 x ggfather and I see from your tree that the living costers ( ie. you and your family?) are also direct descendants of him. This in turn goes back to Benjamin b. 30.11.1820

I have taken some of this ancient information you have just found and put it on my own tree. I hope you are ok with this. I recognise the time and effort this takes to carry out primary research.

Kind Regards

Mike Coster
coster.mike@gmail.com

Mary,

In response to your message below ( nearly 7 years ago now).

The Coster's you list are all in my line. I am direct descendant of George W Coster b1833 and this is him at 58 years old with wife, 2 daughters and son. ( nb. there was an older son Henry b1866)

I have noted Henry Jeffrey attached to the Costers in the 1841 and 1891 censuses. I note you mention his mother was Jane Coster whom I do not have any information on and am interested in Are you able to enlighten me on this lady?

If Henry Jeffrey is first cousin of George Coster then this would make his mother Jane Coster the sister of George's father, James Coster b1783.?

Kind Regards
Mike Coster

Update on the Rickmansworth Costers

In the past I had traced my part of the Coster family back to Benjamin Coster who had a son William in Sarratt in 1750. I had also found earlier christenings n the same parish for William and Martha and John and Elizabeth. This parish had not kept marriage records for 1732-3 to 1755 and I had assumed, and still assume, that Benjamin married in the parish.

After a long break I have been back to the Herts County Records office and found more details.

I found a marriage for

William Coster and Sarah Wright on 29 September 1736. This is recorded in the Herts online records as Mary Wright.

William Hoberry and Dorothy Coster on 4 October 1736. This is recorded in the Herts online records as William Boberry.

Nothing exciting so far.

I then found the marriage of William Costern of Rickmansworth (bricklayer) and Elizabeth Baldwin on 4 July 1709. This is also recorded in the Herts online records.

My thoughts were could they be parents of Benjamin, William and John?

This page in the register had christenings on the page before and after but they were in the 1720s. I thought that they might have missed some christening as well. I went back in the register until I notice a page that had some 1718 christenings in a box in the top right hand corner of the page and a note that these had been supplied from the St Albon’s Archidiaconal records and added in 1912. No Costers in those names. I then looked at the rest of the page and discovered what I had been looking for at the bottom of the page. William and Elizabeth had christened all of their children at the same time and the vicar had recorded their dates of birth. I was very excited to read the following.

William born 8 July 1710
Elizabeth born 16 February 1712
John born 25 March 1714
Thomas born 7 June 1716
Joseph born 8 August 1718
Benjamin born 30 November 1720
Five sons and daughter of William Costern and Elizabeth baptized together on 9 September 1721.

I had found Benjamin’s parents and his whole family!

I did have a look in Rickmansworth for William’s christening, I am assuming it is 1680-1690 but did not find him. I did find some Costard names in a group but the writing is very poor and so I cannot read it all. I can make out several names and dates. Thomas Costard 1684, Elizabeth Costard 1681, Mary Costard 1684. I need to view the original register to make sense of these.

I have several Coster groups in my findings that do not yet fit into the tree. I think that I might be able to find the links between the above details to those families in the near future.

My email address is now grahamcoster@btinternet.com

Graham
I have traced my line back to Benjamin born about 1720 but have not yet found how your family link in. My family were farm labourers and so I think there must be a link somewhere. I will let you know when I have some more details.

Thank you Maria,
No my husbands ancestor was not an Alfred. His Great grandfather emigrated to Australia in 1852 on the Isle of Skye.
My postings about Joseph Coster b 1787 living in Marylebone 1841 now look to be a Rickmansworth Coster. I have bought his death cert (1849) which gives his age as 60 so born 1789ish. The informant was Hannah, relationship not stated. I have found a marriage for Joseph & Hannah Sharp 2/4/1812 at Rickmansworth -do these two link to any ones tree. Joseph died Burnes St Marylebone 12/8/1849 of asiatic cholera. Hannah present at death. Pete

Update, Sarah looks to have died 1841, Joseph died 1849 aged 60 according to the death cert so DOB 1889. Informant was Hannah Coster, cant find her before or after except a death in Marylebone about 1855 (can't find docs at the moment) so 2nd marriage or sister /sister in Law? Does any of this fit any trees? Pete

James Coster (1910 news article) "Massacred by Indians" about 1874

(newspaper clipping)

Massacred by Indians.

Skeleton of Reno County Settler Found.

A dispatch from Guymon, Okla, tells of the finding of a skeleton in the hills near there, with Indian arrows clinging to the bones, mute evidence of some Indian tragedy.

Thirty-six years ago, seven Reno county men were slain by Indians while hunting in those hills and there is good reason to believe that this skeleton, uncovered from the sand after so many years, is that of these victims.

About noon, one sultry, sweltering September day in 1874, two horsemen rode up Main street into Hutchinson, then still a frontier town, hitched their sweating, staggering ponies, ran into the post-office and announced that Indians had slain all in their party excepting them, they being the sole survivors of a party of nine hunters.

Those men, Van Emmons and Broadwell, were settlers in the southwestern part of the county about where Arlington stands now. They had started two weeks previously, nine in all, with four wagons, for the antelope hills, 150 miles to the southwest.

The intended to spend a week or two hunting buffalo, filling the wagons with the hides. They had good luck, found plenty of buffalo and were just about ready to start for home with their loads.

Van Emmons and Broadwell had left the main camp to get a few extra hides. When they returned they found the camp plundered, everything movable take, and a bloody arrow stock sticking upright in the center of the camp, a silent Indian sign that they had been there.

Reported the Massacre.

The two hunter, finding no trace of their comrades rode for their lives back to the settlements and hurried to Hutchinson with the report of the massacre, for they were convinced their companions had been slain.

The alarm aroused Hutchinson. There had for weeks been reports coming in from Dodge City and other points to the west that Indians had been slaying hunters. But this massacre of Reno county settlers brought the depredations of the Indians home.

Two months before and in fact ever since spring, the depredations had become alarming to the west. The Hutchinson News, of which H. Whiteside was ten publisher, announced on July 15: “Last week things west of Dodge City and on the trails in the territory were squally. Quiet a number of hunters, emigrants and teamsters were chased and killed.”

Hutchinson had a company of militia then; not the crack company that Co. E. is today, but they were ready and willing to go after Indians. Chas. Collins was captain, and he and his 45 valiant soldier boys all mounted, set out the last of August to assist in driving back the Indians.

The massacre in the Antelope hills occurred just about the time the Hutchinson troop set out. Work was gotten to them and they reached the scene, found the scalped and mutilated bodies of Jas. Coster, Jas. Crippin and his father, Thatcher Crippin and two others named Boles and Dasher, all Reno County men. The bodies of two others ere never found but all were convinced they had been slain.

Courier Brought News.

On Sept. 24 a courier dashed to Hutchinson with the rumor that Capt. Collins and his Hutchinson troop had been surrounded near Sun City, Barber county, by Cheyenne Indians and all slain. For a fortnight the town was in mourning, but finally shortly after the first of October the troop came home, all safe and sound after skirmishing with several bands of Indians.

Another company, under Captain Ricker, 25 men in all set out from Medicine Lodge, found Indians encamped on swede creek, barber county and in a skirmish killed five of them, captured forty ponies and sustained but one casualty.

Some News Bulletins.

Between July and October, 1874, the Hutchinson News printed the following among the Indian bulletins:

July 16 ---- Things look bad west of Dodge City. Many settlers killed.

Aug. 13 --- Medicine Lodge militia attacked and killed five Indians in Barber county.

Aug. 20 --- Four settlers killed and scalped near Aubrey. Santa Fe bridge west of Spearville burned.

Aug. 27 --- Militia company under arms and left on trail of Indians.

Sept. 3 --- Four Reno county settlers chased by Indians, 60 miles southwest. The opened fire with needle funs, drove off Indians, emptying three caddles and escaped.

Sept. 10 --- Settlers bring in reports of massacres by Indians in Antelope hills.

Sept. 17 --- Gent Reid and ______ Anderson of Langdon, attacked by Indians while hunting buffalo on Elm creek.

Escaped.

Sept. 24 --- Reported that Hutchinson militia had big fight with Indians near Sun City.

Oct. 8 --- Capt. Collins and his company return and are awaiting orders.

These bulletins give some idea of the alarms that Hutchinson people were undergoing thirty-six years ago.

Here is a sample news item of the News of those days: “Mr. Legate, of Barber county, showed us the scaalp of an Osage Indian killed in the fight in Barber county. In 1906 Candaian Census he had 8 children, living in Manitoba/Saskatchewen. I think he is the son of William and Harriet Coster. William was a doctor in Hanwell, middlesex. Died 1870. His wife Harriet then became Matron St George's Hospital London (from 1872-1897), and Hon sec of the Royal British Nursing Association.
Harriet Coster 1833-1915

Searching for descendants of Harriet Coster, nee Connor. originally married William Bradbury (1848) and had one daughter, HEliza harriet (b1850) who remained unmarried and moved to Brussels. after death of Bradbury (UNK?)Harriet then married William Coster (surgeon from Witheridge devon, d1870). they lived in London at St Pancras Informary then Hanwell Central Schools. They had five children, only 2 of which married and had children. Mary Louise was one of Harriets children, she married Robert Tyeth Stevens of Plymouth. She had 2 sons (one, Montague, was mentioned in Harriet's will) and 2 daughters. Montague married Leonora Cook in 1907 and had two sons and 2 daughters, Robert White Stevens who moved to US, and Harold Coster Stevens who married a mrs Newbury in 1935.(They had children). Harriet's other child who survived to have a family was Ernest Coster, he emigrated to Canada (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) married and had 8 children (Harold, Violet, Ernest, Herbert, Daisy, Helen, Robert, Dorothy). At least one of these subsequently moved to the US, to Michigan.

I am in the process of writing a biography of Harriet Coster, who was matron at St GEorge's Hospital London from 1872-1897, and am keen to find some images of her and her husband as I have so far found none despite learning a great deal about her extended family. Her husband was an amateur photographer and at least one image of her existed as it is listed as part of an English nursing exhibition at the Grand Exposition in Chicago in 1893. If anyone can help put me in touch with descdants of this lady it would be great.

Hi Mary,

I believe i may have a connection to the people named:

George Coster,Kezia Coster-Jemima Coster-Kezia Coster! Yes they did live in Carletts Farm in Chorleywood. In fact my father has either Jemima or Kezia's will. One of them was on a boat which was torpedoed! There is also a Nathan Coster who is actually buried in Chorleywood grave yard right by the entrance of the grave yard! I am not yet sure of the connection with Nathan -[i have to ask my dad].The Costers were nearly all Publicans in Chorleywood & Rickmansworth area. My Granfather Harry Coster was born in a pub! There is also an Emily Coster who emigrated to Australia, infact my father was going to live with her, but didn't go in the end.

I hope this is of some help and interest to you.

Kind regards

Maria

Dear Pete
The short answer is no. Reading back my old message we now think that 1818 Thomas's wife was Ann Edwards. This couple had children Thomas c1838, Mary 1842, William 1844 & Frederick 1847 all Westminster born according to the census. My Costers are the bane of my genealogical life so if you have any information that fits with the above, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
