Wouldn't you know -- just after I post my last message, I find the other baptisms. (They were listed under Custien, which wasn't cross-referenced.)

Here's a better list of the children: James (1820), Elizabeth (1823), Bridget (1827), John (1829), Edmond (1831), Mary (1834), Catherine (1836).

Hi, I have Costines from Cloyne in my tree. Richard Costine / Custeen married Julia Hanrahan / Hourihan in Cloyne in 1819. They settled in Ballingarrane (east of Cloyne) and had James (1820), Edmond (1831), Mary (1834), Catherine (1836) and undoubtedly others. I don't know what accounts for the gap in children between 1820 and 1831 -- they may have lived in another town during that time or the church records may be incomplete (although I do have other families in Cloyne with records during that period) or mistranscribed.

My ancestor Bridget Costine (who married John Keily in 1853) is supposedly a daughter of this family. I'm told there is a baptism record for her, although I haven't been able to locate it yet.

Gary

Richard died in 1849 and is buried in the old cemetery beside Cloyne Cathedral. Julia survived him.

Yes, I think you have got it! The names fit, dates work. Mary Costine/Custeen married Jeremiah/Darby Lawton/Laghnane Oct. 8, 1795 in Cloyne,County Cork, Ireland. Sponsors were James Custeen and Char McCarthy. The James Custeen may have been Richards brother. Later (1811 & 1814)a Joan and a David Custeen were baptismal sponsors for 2 of Jeremiah and Mary's children. One of their children was Edmond my ggggfather who married Ellen Brien/O'brien in Ireland and one of their children born in 1841 was Jeremiah with Patk Costine as sponsor, in 1845 Mary was born with Ansty Lawton being a sponsor and then an Anastasia was born June,8,1847. Guess she was named after her grandmother or maybe there was an aunt Ansty too. I always wondered where that name came from. That Anastasia never seemed to make it to the U.S. when the rest of the family emigrated mid 1800's.
Only unusual thing was that it doesn't appear that the name Richard was carried through to my Lawton line although I could be missing records. So, how do you fit into this? I guess you have found my gggggrandfather&mother! Do you have early deaths in your family? Where are you located? Thank you and please write.

Hi

I believe that i am related to Mary Costine of Cloyne. From my records, her parents were a Richard & Anastacia (aka Ansty) Costeen. Richard was born in 1724 in the neighbouring village of Aghada and i know that he had at least one brother, David, and Ansty was born in 1733. Richard died May 2nd 1784, aged 60 and Ansty died May 4th 1798, aged 65. They had multiple children, a Nicholas (married in Aghada in 1803 and had 5 children), Edmond, (born 1763) married a Mary Cronin in 1800 in Cloyne but died on Sept. 17th 1801, aged 38. Richard, Ansty, and Edmond are buried together in Cloyne Old Cemetery, Co. Cork

Dear Sirs,
I am Silvia MacKenzie and live in Argentina.
My grandfather was William McKenzie born in Ballycotton on February 25th, 1868- son of Maurice Mckenzie and Catherine Costine.
I have visited the site twice, but I could only find the new house where he was born and thanks to Father Troy I was able to get the list of his brothers and sisters birth days and sponsors.
I have an Irish passport for my granny was Irish too.

I have been searching the Mckenzie's and Costine's families in Ireland without luck...
My grandad came to Argentina and married here in 1900, my dad was one of their five children.

Perhaps you can give us some information

Thanks for your time.
Regards,

Silvia Mac Kenzie

Immigrated from Cork County, Ireland to the Elizabeth, NJ area in the early 1900s. Married Thomas Dowd in NJ. Her daughter was also named Helen (Helen Dorothea Dowd, born in NJ).

Reportedly Helen Costine had 5-6 siblings who stayed behind in Ireland when she came to the US.
I have an obituary newspaper clipping for Margaret (Costine) Conway wife of James, res 118 Bennigton St, East Boston (Boston) Massachusetts. She is still living in the 1910 census, but other than that I cannot date the clipping. It is probably between 1910 and 1920. Three of their children are James, Mary, and Margaret, found itn the 1900 census. In 1910 there are more, but I cannot easily read them. Does anyone want this clipping?

Hi Ann. I saw the message on the board regarding costine. My name is Shelley Costine. My family lives in Central Florida. I know that my grandfather migrated to the area in the 1800's from south carolina. My half sister thinks the family came from either ireland or scotland. I have been able to find some information through the florida census records and draft registration records. I know this message was posted some time ago. Have you had any additional success?

Hi Ann. My gfather was Henry Costine and gmother was Florence Costine. I think they migrated from South Carolina to central florida. I understand that prior generations were from Waterford Ireland area, or at least that is what we think. My father was John Lemuel Costine (1890-1955), and my mother was Eunice Irene Goodman Costine (1916-1999).
I found a website last night where they are posting information from Ireland, but information is limited at this time.

How were you able to track the information you received?

Nice to hear from you.

Shelley

Hi Joann. I think we are relatives. John W was my grandfather or greatgrandfather..?? My Dad was John Lemuel . He was born in 1890. My Dad died in June 1955 before I was born in November. My mother was Eunice Goodman Costine. She was born in Polk County Florida Nov 25 1916 and died in Polk County Jan 29 1999. It was a second marriage for both. My Dad had 7 children from his first marriage, and then, collectively, Mom and Dad had 3 more: my brother Randall who died at 44 of cancer 1991, my brother Bobby who lives in Lakeland, and myself. I live in Tampa now. The Costines settled in the Socrum area of North Lakeland. My half sister Arlene has done quiet a bit of geneology research and may be helpful to your endeavors. I hope you had a Happy New year.

I am from the Roberts line which may not mean much right now but John W. Costine married Sarah Harris the sister of Celia (Puss) Harris who married Benjamin Tyer. Celia was my great great grandmother. The Costine family can be found in Columbia County flroida prior to moving to Polk County. John W. also has a Civil War pension on rootsweb polk County. He is buried in Mt Olive Cemetery outside Polk City Florida. I have recently been to the cemetery and have a pic of his grave. Does anyone know exactly when he came to Polk County and where he lived? Celia and Sarah's parents were Celia Roberts and William Harris also from South Carolina, Colleton County. Celia Roberts was the daughter of James Roberts and Temperance Davis Roberts. James is buried in Union County Florida and Temperance is buried in Greenppond Cemetery outside Polk City, also have pics of these graves. Trying to dtermine when these families actually came to Polk County and why. Believe they received land from being in the military. William James Roberts (Cherokee Bill) is of special interest and was the brother of Celia Roberts. He is buried in Greenpond and died in 1896. Story has they were Native American and some others believe there is a connection to Reverend Pierre Roberts of South Carolina. please contact at cocopo@bellsouth.net

Edward,
Good to hear from you! Where in Michigan? My Lawton's arrived about 1852 in Green Oak, MI(Livingston Co.).
Can you tell me more about Costines? Was it a name that was changed a long time ago?
Sorry about all the questions but you are the first Costine I have heard from.
Would your dad talk to me? Is Costine Scottish? I was thinking it was possibly Italian.
Please write,
Ann

Shelley,

I have a bit more. Back in 1795,in the Roman Catholic Church of Cloyne Parish (Cork County, Ireland) on October, 8 ,Mary Custeen ( Costine) married my ggggfather Derby Laghnane (Jeremiah Lawton). Witnesses to their marriage were James Custeen and Charles Mc Carthy.

I am giving you the spelling as it exists on the records I have received.

Other Costines who were witnesses to their children's births in Kilmacahill (east of Cork City) were Joan and David Custeen.
Costine's associated with Derby and Mary's children's -children (around 1841-1851) again in Kilmacahill ,were Patrick Custien and Michael Costen.

As you can see either someone could not spell very well or or as with my Lawton's, the name evolved over time...Custeen,Custien,Costen,Costine.
Who was your gfather and do you know his father's name?

Write, Ann

Shelley,
That is a very good question. I searched every site I could and posted queries allllllll ... over. I ordered books and films. Along the way, a fellow in Ireland saw some of my postings/queries and wrote one day that he had a lot of Lawton info from Cork County. We were focusing on Cork because we always thought our grandma spoke of it.

I knew from my gggfather's death certificate here in the U.S. that his mom and dad were Jeremiah and Mary Lawton. My friend in Ireland had marriage info for a Derby(Jeremiah) Laghnane(Lawton) and Mary Custeen(Costine). Of course that was a match. He also had a marriage record for my Edmond Lawton to Ellen Brien (O'Brien) which I had confirmed earlier through another query to a board in the area where they lived in the U.S..
Next came all of Edmond/Ellen's children who were born in Ireland. In about 1852 the family left Ireland (Kilmacahill, E. Co. Cork) for the U.S..

This has all occurred over 3 years and cost a lot of money and time. But as you can see, I still get leads every now and then.

I finally wrote the Mallow Heritage Center which handles that East cork area and pretty much got confirmation that about 90% of what I had collected was correct. Now, I have more questions and can see that this job never ends.

I do not know if your Costine's are those I have found in that Cloyne area of East Cork. If you would like to email me at wrights@atl.mediaone.net, I may be able to connect you with some Costines I have run into along the way.
Ann
