Vickie - I also have classified David, Andrew and Henry Costner as the children of Thomas and Mary M. (Barringer) Costner. As I mentioned in a previous message, the census schedules support Henry's birth as occurring between 1770-1780; this would place him in the first marriage of Thomas (to Mary M. Barringer). Also, if you study Thomas and Catherines' pension files, when the surviving "children and heirs at law" of Catherine filed for Catherine's benefits in 1846, they did not list Henry or Andrew even though both were alive at that time. At that time, 'heirs at law' would not have included stepchildren, which Henry and Andrew would have been in relation to Catherine. I believe this is an important point that seems to be overlooked by many. The idea that Mary, Thomas, Joseph and Frederick might simply have been out of touch or uninformed is pure assumption and speculation.

Vickie - I'm not sure of the how or why, but the children of Henry and Elizabeth seem to have adopted the spelling without the "t." I've been able to trace six of the seven children of Henry and Elizabeth, and the use of "Cosner" appears to be consistent from that point on.

I descend from David Stiff Costner who I've documented as being a son of Thomas & Mary Barringer Costner. I realize that some people question this parentage. Just curious of your option.

Also curious about the spelling of Cosner. When and how did the "t" get dropped?

Re: Henry Costner, Monroe County, Indiana (b. 1795 N.C.)

One correction I wanted to make to my previous posting: Maria Cosner was the youngest daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Costner, but not the youngest child. Jacob Lewis Cosner was the youngest (b. 1822-1823 in NC; d. 21 Feb 1896 in Champaign County, IL).
I have not found where the idea that Henry Costner was born about 1795 came from. It appears to perpetuate itself throughout various family trees without any source or support. On further research of the census schedules for Henry Costner (1830, 1840 and 1850), it appears most likely that he was born between 1771-1780. If that is the case, he would then be a son of Thomas and Mary M. (Barringer) Costner, and not the child of Catherine P. (Unknown Maiden Name) Costner. This would also make sense in light of the fact that he was not listed as a surviving heir of Catherine P. Costner when certain of her children applied for her widow's pension benefits in 1846.

Mike - I neglected to mention that Maria Cosner, my 2nd great-grandmother, was the youngest child of Henry and Elizabeth Costner. You're probably aware of this - but just to clarify. Maria was born 24 Dec 1819. Her dates of birth and death are from her gravestone inscription, "Maria, Wife of Alfred Houston, Died April 30, 1859, Aged 39 YRS 4 MO 6 D'S," Beekman Cemetery, East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois
- Dennis

Mike - I've seen several of your messages regarding the Costner/Cosner Family, so I'm especially happy to hear from you. I descended from Maria Cosner who married Alfred Houston in Monroe County, IN on 10 Jul 1837 and they are my 2nd great-grandparents. They had nine children, seven born in Monroe County and two in Champaign County, IL. Maria died in East Bend Township, Champaign County, IL on 30 Apr 1859.
I decided more recently to find out more about the Cosner side of the family, but was curious if anyone knew of Henry and Elizabeths' dates of death and place of burial. Also, do you believe it was "our" Henry who married Charity Estepe Myers on 1 Nov 1849 in Monroe County?

I'm in the process of trying to get that information for you. I do know that the pronounciation of Costner and Cosner I've only heard one way but the pronouciation of Kastner, it ometimes is prounounced a couple of different ways. I think tht is why the name is spelled so many dfferent ways here. (Casner, Cassner, Kassner etc.)

Do you know the movie star Kevin Costner. If you've heard his name pronouced that is the most common way for Costner.

Kastner FamilyTree DNA Project

Sometime ago I started a project with FamilyTree DNA. I got really busy and didn't pursue it as much as I wanted. However it is back in the swing now. We have 10 people who have tested and it shows 9 different groups so far. DNA testing can really be the breakthrough you are looking for. We have a temporary web site :http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kastner

During the next month another web site will be up and running, giving even more details.

If you are a male with any of the variant Kastner spellings, please consider joining. It is a simple swab to your cheek, no blood test. If you are a femail and would like to contribute to a general fund for Kastner,s you may do so at the web page. It is administered by FamilyTree DNA. If you have questions, please contact me.

Dear Lorie Beck,

I was hoping to find the source of Costners in PA.

Our known family came into York Co, PA in 1748--Adam Costner --Kastner came to Tryon County NC abt 1755 with sons Peter, Jacob, Thomas and daughter Margaret--son Andrew may not have come then--or at all, another daughter--Anna Barbara--Maria Barbara Fritz married Philip Fritz 22 AUG 1758 in York, PA--some of this family came to Lincoln Co, NC;
Maria Ursula Kastner m Conrad Guenther Christ Lutheran Church, York, PA m 22 Aug 1758
NOTE: there is indication that the surname Gunther of Gunder becomes Kinder in some areas. This could be the Conrad Kinder family in Lincoln NC
I have a couple more names--I'm not completely clear on that generation

Notes:
Hans Georg Adam Kastner was in Weinhelm Germany in 1733; Took Oath of Allegiance 16 Sep 1748
RECORD: Christening Edenkoben Germany 17 Apr 1698/ 28 Apr 1709; Christ Lutheran Church, York PA; Burial first grave in Philadelphia Lutheran Cemetery 1767 (Kastner's Church);
AIS Search (tax records) 1607-1819 Adam Costner Philadelphia Co PA; Philadelphia 1748
BOOK: Rupps List of Original Immigrants p187 ship Palainia--Patience; Annals of Lincoln Co NC p95 327; Our Kin by LM Hoffman p231 232
Ancestry of Hans Gg Adam Kastner was done by Charles Lynn Costner with Dr. Alfred Hans Kuby & LDS Church Edenkoben, Germany Records

so I don't know if our Costners are related because I have been working on the North Carolina families.
Thank you for your reply.

Melanie

Thanks for responding! Unfortunately, I have very little info to share. I have ordered the military pension file for Alexander from the NARA hoping to get birthdate and location. I have no idea if he had siblings. I found long ago on the Neal board (I think) a listing for James and Elizabeth that had 2 girls and "Alix". I know that Alexander's birth year should be about 1830 as he is listed on the Blount Co TN census as 30 yrs in 1860. My husband is descended from Alexander and Artie's son, Joseph Alexander. Joseph Alexander actually went by "Alex" and probably was less than a year old when Alexander died. Artie then married John Moore. Since Alexander and Artie ended up in Blount County where a number of the Costners were, I have hoped to make a connection between James & Elizabeth and Alexander. It at least seems possible.

John F. Costner, 1915 in Hays, Ellis Co., KS

I would like to know a little more abt. him. I found an article in one of the newspapers here in Hays that he had owned a house that was built in 1867 in Rome, KS and had it moved to the lot that we now own. It was a historical house & was torn down in 1960 which is when the new owner built this house. I will be trying to find out more on the house.

I have found he & his family in the census records which shows they were in Hays by 1915 to 1930. 1930 shows he lived at 504 W 9th st., so I will see if that house is still there. The news article shows he sold the Rome house in 1929, so whether or not they actually lived in the house, I am not sure at this point.

Anyway, I would like to hear from anyone from his line. Thanks, Betty Macdonald emacdonald@media-net.net.

I have 5 children who came from German and several more were born in York, Pa, I am not clear on the ones that went to NC with George Adam. Are these children listed in his Bible? My line is Joseph Lester Costner who died in Edgefield, SC 1938 and was the son of James Cicero.

the disease that runs in my Costner line is "macular degeneration". My g grandfather and two of his siblings had it. My grandmother had it as well as three of her five children now have it. I also have have three cousins that have been diagnosed with it. So far neither my father, brother or myself have developed it, but we all get regular check-ups as do my children. My 17 year old son, has a slight pressure problem. It runs from 21 to 23 each time he gets checked, so we get his pressure checked about every six months or so. good luck to you and your family. Jean
Henry Costner, Monroe County, Indiana (b. 1795 N.C.)

I am searching for more information about the dates of birth and death for Henry Costner/Cosner, b. abt. 1795 in North Carolina; d. abt. 1850 in Monroe County, Indiana. Also, the same information for his wife, Elizabeth, and the location of their burials. Henry was the son of Thomas Costner who served briefly from Tryon County, North Carolina during the Revolution. The surviving children of Thomas and his wife, Catherine P., applied for pension benefits in 1846 but did not list Henry as a surviving heir. Any further information would be appreciated.

Re: Blindness in Costner family

I am from the David Haywood Costner/David Jefferson Costner line. David Jefferson Costner is my great-great-grandfather...his daughter, Mary "Mollie" Vergie Costner is my great-grandmother.
I was told by a family historian who was studying my line, that a couple of Mary's relatives around the late 1800s and/or early 1900s had glaucoma. One of her uncles had it, an aunt had it, and 3 of her cousins had the disease and they were all blind. Mary also went blind from glaucoma around 40 years until her death in 1991.
Mary's son, JD Stacy (my grandfather) was blind from advanced macular degeneration. My mother, Evelyn Stacy Rushing, now has mild macular degeneration, and so does two of her brothers, and 2 cousins of hers.
So, yes we have glaucoma and macular degeneration on our side also.

Nancy

Costner Family Info (Keith Norris)

Hi Keith Norris,
I had contacted you several years ago and we exchanged some information regarding the Costner Family tree. My computer crashed and I lost all my info as well as your email address. I recently came across a paper I had printed out a few years back with your name on it and well as a littl bit of the info. Do you have a site with Costner Family info listed? I found reference on the web about a site called Adam Kastner Family Web Site on Family.com but I was unable to locate it. Do you have a link to that site?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

My full name is James Wilson Costner

My fater was Franklin Roosevelt Costner
Grandfater was George Costner
Grandmother was Rose Mabel Kelly.

Sorry, my Margaret Costner (b. 1808) married a David Jeff Logan and her sister Anna Marie (b. 1810) married a Michael Huffstetler (b. 1801) in 1828 in Lincoln Co. Margaret and family moved to Blount Co, TN and stayed until 1855 and then moved to Pope Co, AR. Another sister Rachel married Harley Barry Huffstetler and sister Fanny married a Best and moved to Blount Co, TN. There seems to be a definite migration pattern here and I'll bet some of my line are related to yours.
