Are Diane and John not alive, or do they not know where their son is? I thought the Cotherns and their 3 children were living in Sebring, FL in the late 80's or early 90's. I believe that was John's birth place. Are you sure the family didn't return to Nome, Alaska, where they spent so many years?

Searching for Descendant of Gertrude Mackey Cothern, Marshall Co MS

Gertrude Mackey was the sister to Eutokia Mackey (m. Jacob Stone). They lived in Marshall Co MS with their parents Alex and Fannie Raines Mackey. I am needing some help in identifying some long ago pictures and thought maybe someone in Eutokia's family might could help. Gertrude m. Charley Cothern sometime around 1914 and had all daughters ... so not knowing who any of the daughters married, I don't even know where to begin to find a descendant in that line. Based only on censuses, the daughters are Ruby, Francis, Myrtice, Velma, Annie, and Charline (from 1915-1924). If you can help me, please email vernaws@aol.com. Thanks!

Family Name

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Casthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick
No unfortunately I have a real problem trying to get any information on the Cothern side of the family. My research has turned up the fact that my grandfather, Levi Neal Cothern had an older brother Franklin and their father was Levi Cothern and the mother, I think, was Cynthia Fulton but I show them in the 1880 census living in another household which makes me think that both parents were dead.
If I uncover any more information I would be happy to pass it along.
Don Smithers
Sugar Land, Texas

Popped up a Robert Edwin Dasing in Dallas county, TX, that is a good bet for Robert's son.

Are you related to Robert?
Melvinia Vining marries B. Cothern in Coffee County Georgia

In a book titled " Wards History of Coffee County" Georgia by historian - Warren Ward. On page 78 Mr. Ward states that a Melvinia Vining married a B. Cothern on March 28, 1878 in Coffee Co.

I am searching for information on Melvinia Vining aka Vinnie. I want to know where she got the name Vining from. Was she married to a Vining man (who was he?) prior to her marriage to Cothern or was Vining her maiden name ?

There is a Melvinia Vining listed as a child of 6 yrs of age in the 1864 Newton County Georgia Census. She is daughter of Elijah Vining. (Elijah is son of Shadrack Vining and Sarah Radcliffe). This could well be the same Melvinia. That would have made her 20 yrs old in 1878 at time of her marriage to Cothern.

There is a family tree website on the ancestry.com that gives information of a Melvinia who also married a B. Cothern in Coffee County Ga. It states that Melvinia's parents were Joshua Denton and Barbara Burkett. The dates are a wee bit off, but it still could all fit together. Just dont know how Melvinia could be a Denton and a Vining. Unless there was an adoption or perhaps as a coincidence there was 2 Melvinia's who married the same named 2 " B. Cotherns" in Coffee County. Thats a long shot, but could be possible.

I am very interested in her VINING background / history. If anyone can help me with this please contact me at kathypecina@hotmail.com

Thank You

Ted
I put in some incorrect information in the above answer. Ada - wife of Jim Cothren maiden name is Smith - father - John Peyton Smith, born and raised in Wilson Co. Tennessee. for some reason she married Jim under her step-father's name of Rorex. Her mother, Amanda Francis maiden name was Keplinger. I just noticed that it says that something is wrong with the "Thread' what ever that means - I'll go to your web site - Beverly

Hello,
I am granddaughter to Viola Mae Cothern and St. Elmo Austin Sanders. Her father is Orville Fay Cothern and mother Aurora Blanche Clayton. Her brothers are Homer and Ivan Cothern. Viola was born in Pana, IL on 4-27-1919. My great uncle Ivan lived in Ramsey , IL during the last years of his life. I believe Homer still lives there. I am interested in finding Paul D. Cothern or his family to find out more about our family history.

Julia Dobrucki
633 Azure Hills Dr.
Simi Valley, CA 93065
805-584-1203

I am trying to locate information about my "Tree", but I don't have much to go on. My grandfather was Forrest Lester Cothern, born around 1902, in Ilinois, died in 1955. He was engineer for the Illinois Central, and lived in Clinton at the time of his death. His father, my gg, would have died sometime around 1908 or so. I don't have his first name yet. Forrest Lester Cothern had one sibling, a sister named Clara Cothern, who later married a Jones. My father, Forrest Wayne Cothern, an only child (and not just a whole heck of a lot of help when it comes to genealogy) was born in 1925, in Illinois. We are currently searching for my grandmother's bible which supposedly has more info written done. Any help?

She was born circa 1771 in Wilkes Co N. C. supposedly from the Cherokee parents. Do know that their must be a connection with the Cherokees for a son married into Chief Big Eagles family. Then a couple of her grandchildren also married into this same family.

Re: Jim Beverly Cothren of Pomona, CA

Ted,
I am just learning how to use the computer on my own and learning how to use information on the Web. This is my first time to this site and saw your message. What happen to us is too lenghty to go into and to painful besides. I loved our publication and all the people we met - I was heart broken. Most of our records were destroyed and I had to start over. Its water under the bridge now, so to speak. I noticed another Beverly Cothren on this site, that is not me. I am still working on the Cothren/Cothran/Cothrum - the 1880 Census was a boom for me. I have my Cothran's/Cothrums in P.O. Cherokee, Colbert Co, Alabama in 1880, Father Jim is 63 - born in Ga. with daughters Minervia, Eliza, and Lizzie, all born in Alabama. There was also a brother William who would moved to Broken Arrow (?), Olkahoma. Need information on him. I think that I saw in my "old" records that were destroyed that the older Jim Cothran was married to a Emma Brumley, but I have never been able to find that information again. A few doors away is Jim Cothran, age 17 with wife Ada (Keplinger) Cothran, age 17, and son Willie 9 mos. - The younger Jim Cothran left sometime after that and next appear in Johnson Co, Arkansas by 1900.This is my husband's line. By now we have a new spelling - James Madison Cothren. Please get in touch with me, I'd like to share what else I have, and can you add anything else? I need to know about the elder Jim Cothran's background and where everyone else went - I have a few clues. Would like to hear from anyone else working on this line also. Thank-you for your time - My E-mail at my daughters is - cothresblaze@netzero.net - Beverly

I have several Cothern connections though none are direct ancestors of mine. Matilda Radcliff married Jessie Cothern (Cotheran) in Fayette Co. in 1835 but divorced in 1848. Their children were Simon R., Jane, James, and Jeremiah. I don't know anything about these children with the exception of Simon who was murdered in Centrailia, IL in Feb. 1900.
Mary Radcliff (sister of Matilda) married Joel Cothern in 1843 in Fayette County. They were in the 1850 census with children Lucinda and Matilda but have not been able to locate them since. Mary's brother David indicated in 1879 that when last heard from Mary, she lived in Memphis TN.
