Cothran in Dyer Co., Tennessee

I think I have found my Grandfather in 1900 on the Dyer county Tennessee Census.

Robert Cothran is living with Wiley Palmer and family and listed as Wiley's nephew. This Robert Cothran was born Apr 1878 in Tennessee so this fits with the age of my grandmother Martha Elizabeth Campbell who was born in Tennessee in 1878. I need help finding more about this family so I can find if he really is my grandfather. He died in 1909 just before my father was born so my father never knew him.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Martha Bell
in Florida
marthaabell@yahoo.com

Don't know if this is pertinent to your line, but someone on the Vintage Clothing board on ebay has a West Point uniform for a Wade Rushton Cothran, Jr, born in 1896 in SC. He also attended the Citadel, and they have both uniforms. Just an FYI, as I am not related to the Cothran line.

The information I rec'd on Hiram was from Balkum home page-Lee's family tree, he thought Hiram was b. @ 1799 in Oklahoma, with Susannah b. on 6 Sept. 1830 in ALA, died 22 Dec. 1912, which is my husband grandmother, guess the info on Hiram could be diffferent, tho I don't think he could have been born in 1848, he wouldn't be the fsther to 8 of his siblings..have no info on whewre he died or was buried, does this clarify or make it more confusing?/ maybe looking at two different Cothrans???

This is an old post but, I will reply anyway, hoping that you are still out there. I am looking for Hiram Cothran who's folks were born in IL. he was born in Arkansas in 1848 and his father was Thomas Cothran who died after 1860 possibly in Howell County, Missouri. My Thomas Cothran was born about 1810 in IL but I know not where. Can you tell me more about Hiram? Where did he live and where did he die. Is he in the IL census data? have you found out more about him since you posted this. I found a very old Hiram Cothran in the 1820 census for Franklin County, IL. Where did Susan die?

I am writing in reply to your query on your uncle.I know that this is a long shot . I had an uncle named Howard Cothran. His father was Andrew Jackson Cothran of Wilkes County,N.C.. I looked up the census of Wilkes County,N.C. for the year 1930.My father, Jack Philmore Cothran was listed as well as his mother,Clementine ,his sisters Isabell,Bertie,Dorthy and his brothers Lonnie,Jervey,John. His brother Howard and his sister Martha was not listed.Martha had died at the age of 13th of the flu.Could it be possible that your Andrew Jackson Cothran is my Andrew Jackson Cothran?Rumor in the family said that Andrew had been married twice. Please write back, Gwen

My Mother has mentioned that we are related to the Horn's. Thier family name is Cothran. Her oldest brother is named Silas Henry Cothran. She has a book put together by a lady in California that traces the "Shirley" family back to England and Scotland. The woman who is a relative was inspired by the Author , Alex Haley. Names travel through time carried by decendants quite often. Silas now lives in Paris, AR. Where the Shirley's have lived for generations. Emmit Void Cothran my Grandfather married Mary Shirley. The connection to the Horns comes from the Shirleys.

My Mother was Geneva Mullenix. Her parents were Rutherford Hayes Mullenix and Dovie Ellen. Dovie's parents were Nicholas David Cothren II (1865-1894) and Molly Florence Lumpkin (1871-1950). His parents were Nicholas David Cothren (about 1818-1861?) and C. Yates (1831-1870).
Nick and Molly's children were Dovie Ellen(1886-1969)Nicholas David Cothren III, Charlie, Floyd, Melva Ida, Daisy, and Alice. I was there in May and Mansville, OK (and the graveyards) are still populated with Cothrens.
Drop me a line... we might be able to compare rumors, traditions and maybe even a few facts. My father had two brothers (now deceased) Cecil Duval Cothran Jr. and George Rutherford Cothran. My paternal grandparents (now deceased) were Cecil Duval Cothran, Sr. and Catherine Rutherford Cothran. My grandfather had several siblings and they were George Frank Cothran, Sr., Edward Morrison Cothran, Bennie Cothan Cawthorn, Margaret Cothran Baldwin. My ggrandparents were George King Cothran and Annie Hill Cothran. I've never looked into my family tree (for whatever reason) and now with no parents, grandparents or uncles, all I know is our family was definately in central Alabama in the mid 1800's. Does this fit into anyone else's information.

Taryn:
I saw your e-mail while surfing to find out some additional information on my families. Howard Jefferson Cothran is my uncle. He and my father were brothers. He had another brother and another sister in addition in the ones you mentioned in your e-mail. I would be glad to share this information with you. I would like to also have some information on Uncle Howard's family because it has been a long time since I have been in touch with any of them.

You are welcome to send me an e-mail.

Cothran's in South Carolina, perhaps other spellings

I am looking for traces of Richard Howard Cothran, born 1892 in Inman, SC, and his father Richard Henry Cothran. They are my husband's Grandfather and G-Grandfather, respectively.

Richard Howard was married to Jennie Gertrude Guffey and had a brother, Roy Haynes Cothran.

Richard Henry was reportedly married to Nora Ella Serana Haynes. My mother-in-law remembers a story about Richard Henry killing a man and running from the law. Maybe Nora last heard from him being in Texas.

I would love to hear from anyone that can help. You can respond to me here, or e-mail directly with any information or leads.

Thanks in advance,

Micki Downey

Family Name

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Cawthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick
