Thomas Cothran

I need help finding family.
My ggreat grandfather was Thomas Cothran born 1812 in IL and died in Missouri or Arkansas. He was in the 1850 census of Lawrence County Arkansas and the 1860 census of Howell County, MO.

I suspect Thomas was married twice. Once to a Rachel? and again to Penelope Ogle. His children include my great grandfather Hiram B. Cochran and Elvira, Elizabeth, Silas P. Cothran.

I cannot find Thomas after 1860 but, he may be related to the Independance County Cochrans who returned to IL during the war. Hiram was found with the Elizabeth (Joseph Jefferson) Cochran family in 1870 of Jackson County IL.

Any help will be appreciated. I am at a brick wall.

Family Name

I joined the Cawthorne Family Site several years back and at that time thought my research would soon lead to England and that spelling of my family name of Cothern. Now my book of Cothern Clan is up to 1,000 pages with the indexes and I have the following spelling of the names of our line:
Cothern (731 people), Cauthon (703), Cawthon (424), Cauthron (115), Cothran (87), Cothren (56), Cawthorn (44), Cawthron (29) and Cothen, Cotheran, Cothon (2 each) and Cathon, Cathron, Caughthorn, Cauthan, Cauthorne, Cawthren, Cothorn, Cothram (1 each). So obviously Cawthorne IS NOT a good choice name for the site that I am in. It would be wonderful if all people with the various spellings of the name could be in ONE site so that information could be shared more readily. Any thought? Jean Rodwick
Ronnie:
My neice, Olivia Hilliard, called me tonight about finding information on your message board about my great-grandfather William Cothron. According to my information, William was a carpenter in Hale County, Alabama. This is where his children were born, i.e. Joe, Henrietta(my grandmother), William, Ollie, Bessie, Ralph and Violet. My father, Victor, was raised in an orphran's home after Henrietta left his dad when Victor was five years old. I don't know anything about them living in Georgia, but from what I understand, after great-grandfather, John Atkins, died, the Atkins and Cothrons moved to Palatka, Florida. Florida is where we met Joe, Ollie, Bessie, Ralph, Wesley and Annie in 1950.

Dear Gary:

It is easy to get side tracked and put this genealogy aside for quite some time. I ma responding to a reply to the ancestry board you left quite some time ago. You stated William Cothron who married Sarah Bennet was your wife's great grandfather. The best we have found is William Cothron was also the great grandfather of my husband. His father was Ralph Bincroft Cothron Jr, who was the son of Ralph B. Cothron who was the son of William Cothron. What child of William was your wife's grandfather?

Thanks!
Sharon
