COTTINGHAM Variations in Yorkshire, England

The family group of Patrick & Bridget COTTINGHAM is a branch in my tree. I've no direct decendancy from them however, in the course of finding them for my tree, I encountered some variations in the surname. Two of these variations are quite far removed from Cottingham so I've decided to list the variations I've encountered as a aid for those more actively researching this family.

Patrick & Bridget were both b. Ireland - Patrick abt. 1848 Galway & Bridget abt. 1849 Butly Numes, County Mayo -- Places of birth from 1871 & 1891 census Rotherham, Yorkshire

1871 Census - Found as WALSH
1881 Census - Found as COTNEY
1891 Census - Found as COLLINGHAM
1901 & 1911 - found as COTTINGHAM

Births for all 10 children - Martin, George, Mary Ann, Bridget, Patrick Jr, Michael, Thomas, Kate, Maria & John - are found in the Free BMD Index @ Ancestry as COTTENHAM. Variations have been submitted to Ancestry.

Martin & George were listed on the census as b. Sheffield, Yorkshire & their births were registered in the Sheffield Registration district.

Mary Ann is the first of the children to be born in Rotherham & registered in Rotherham, Yorkshire. All subsequent births are Rotherham, Rotherham Registration District, Yorkshire.

Kate's name was officially was registered as "Kate" not Katherine or Catherine.

After the change over to COTTINGHAM, the name seems to have stayed stable & had no more variations that I've encountered in the records available to me on line.

John and Elizabeth Cottingham, Yarwell, Northants

Trying to trace any info on Elizabeth (b 1801?), wife of John Cottingham (b 1806), particularly their marriage and Elizabeth's maiden name. They had a number of children born in Yarwell, Northamptonshire (William (1824), Elizabeth (1827), Sarah (1830), Mary Ann (1833), Jane (1835), Mary (1838), John (1841) and Hannah (1845) that I know of) and I am making a leap of faith that perhaps they were married there too.

Also believe that both Elizabeth and John died in the 1840's and wondered if they could have been buried in Yarwell too?

Can anyone help please?

My husband is the grandson of Raymond Cottingham, one of Henry's children. I think it may be the same family you are looking for. I think they settled first in Fletcher and then moved to Tilbury Ontario. One of the family is doing a history as well so they may help you even more than I can. Many of the family are still in the area.

I'm hoping you still check this message board every once in a while. I'm wondering where Peter D. Cottingham fits into the lineage of Priscilla. He was a druggist in Snow Hill, MD. He worked alongside Zadok Powell, whom I think was a relative but I can't find the link. Zadok Powell's son was named Willaim C (for Cottingham) Powell.
Wondering if you can give me any information

I recently located a ebook published by John William Wallace of Philadelphia in 1842. In this book ( all about 12 Judges & Law Officers) in Ireland between 1822 and 1840. In this there is a reference to a John Cooper Cottingham "Coroner" of Cavan. It also also mentions a Coroner by the name of Burrowes in Cavan. A remark made by Cottingham in this book was his displeasure about the english coroners taking over "their work".
I am at a loss to find anything else on J C Cottingham. can
anyone help?

Hi, my name is Dana Cottingham Fricke. I know my Cottingham family connection is not directly tied to Bibb County Alabama but after doing some extensive research I stumbled upon this blog http://journey2thepast.blogspot.com/ and saw that this person discovered a lost cemetery in Bibb County Alabama with several "Cottingham's" burried there. You may want to take a look at the above site to see if it may be of some use to you. good luck and happy hunting!

George COLLINGTON (b 1615 - Engalnd, abt 1645 - Accomack, VA)

I suspect that this post will both anger and infuriate more than a few COTTINGHAMs who visit and inhabit this COTTINGHAM message board, but I feel a duty to report to you and inform you that the person transported by Captain William ROPER to America almost certainly wasn't named "Cottingham", despite whatever else you have been reading in transcriptions of records over the years.

Until yesterday, I was NOT aware that anyone even thought that the man might have been named COTTINGHAM. But I tend to try to work from primary records and working originally from the extant image of Captain William ROPER's patent on Old Plantation Creek in Accomack dated 06 Sep 1636, I had read the names of those transported to be "Wm. YATES" and "Georg COLLINGTON".

I would encourage you to take a look yourselves at the image of Captain William ROPER's Patent. It may be viewed at the web site of the Virginia State Libary at:

http://image.lva.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/GetLONN.pl?first=375&a... Patent

*

I cannot advise you as to what the handwriting of the other early entries in the Accomack and Northamptom records might say, as I haven't seen these. But I will certainly concede that the writing can be difficult to read and I can see how someone might have mistakenly believed these records to say "COTTINGHAM". Moreover, once Hotten made this ascription in his book, it is particularly easy to see how suggestion would lead others to concur. I will endeavor to try to obtain copies of these other court record images, too, but I do not believe that the ascription of the name as COLLINGTON particularly turns on an interpretation of handwriting.

Rather, the key to understanding the identities is the relationship of the ROPER, YATES, and COLLINGTON (COLLETON) families in the six decades preceding Captain William ROPER's arrival in America.

*

So in understanding the correct identity of George COLLINGTON, I am at least able to share with those interested in this immigrant some English background of extraordinary richness.

The key to understanding the relationship can be found in the prior coinciding appearance of the names of ROPER, YATES and COLLINGTON in a remarkable and tragic event in English history, the betrayal and capture of Saint Edmund CAMPION in 1581. This is aptly descibed in Evelyn WAUGH's book on CAMPION, but can also be garnered from a variety of online sources.

See, for example:

http://www.cin.org/campcapt.html

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~hadland/tvp/tvp8.htm

Father Edmund CAMPION, a Jesuit priest sent back to England from Rome along with Father PARSONS to orchestrate a revival of Catholocism in England, was captured in 1581 at the Lyford, Berks, home of Mrs. YATES, a place called "Lyford Grange". The circumstances of CAMPION'S betrayal and capture involved intigue by a sordid fellow by the name of George ELIOT, who had previously worked as the household Steward of Sir Thomas ROPER, of Orpington, Kent.

Sir Thomas ROPER, was the son of Sir William ROPER and Margaret MORE, and grandson of Sir Thomas MORE, who served as Lord Chancellor under Henry VIII and who was beheaded and martyred for his refusal to acknowledge Henry as head of the Church.

George ELIOT had been implicated in a murder and rape and, in axchange for leniency, had been enlisted as a "priest catcher" to assist in the capture of priests secreted in Catholic households.

He used his former employ in the ROPER household and acquaintance with the YATES' family's cook to insinuate himself into the YATES household just as CAMPION had returned there from Oxford to conduct a Mass, securing an invitation to the forbidden Mass. Thereafter, Eliot departed and summoned local authorities to assist in CAMPION's capture.

Amongst those actually captured at the YATES household was the YATES' family's household priest Father John COLLINGTON (COLLETON).

Father CAMPION and Father FORD were both tortured and ultimately excuted, martyred for their faith. Father John COLLINGTON (b 1548, d 1636), by contrast, was spared, in no small part because he had never departed England and his religious deviancy was seen as unrelated to a Romish, Popish conspiracy. A biography of Father John COLLINGTON (shown as COLLETON) appears within the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. I would be delighted to forward a copy to anyone who is interested.

Following CAMPION's capture, the Privy Council also ordered the surrender of two of Sir Thomas ROPER's household servants, the search of Thomas ROPER's home and ultimately the apprehension and imprisonment of Thomas ROPER himself, though ROPER was later released on bond.

Amongst primary records relating to the capture of Edmund CAMPION which may be found online are the notes of the Privy Council’s meeting of 26 Jul 1581 issuing a warrant and directing that a letter be sent to the Sheriff of Berkes relating to the imprisonment of the women captured at Mrs. YATES home during the detention of Edmund CAMPION. Acts of the Privy Council of England, Vol. XIII (1581-1582) pp. 136-7. (See http://books.google.com/books?id=BcsLAQAAIAAJ&dq=yate%20... ). This volume contains a further reference to Mrs. YATES at page 145, as well as numerous mentions of CAMPION. It is shown on this page that CAMPION is to be tortured upon the rack to extract a confession that he had said a Mass at Mrs. YATES home. There is another mention at page 170.

On 27 Jul 1581, the Council sent letters to the Sheriffs of Oxon and Cambridge directing the apprehension of one “MOORE”, as well as other persons whose names are underwrittin (a blank space in the records, though perhaps these names were actually identified in the written order). The immediately following entry indicates that “A letter to Thomas ROPER, esquirour, requiring him to sende upp unto their Lordships ---- THOMPSON and PAINE, his servauntes. [pp. 140-1]

We find the Privy Council on August 2, 1581, issuing a warrant for the Warden of Fleete (prison) to take into custody Thomas ROPER, of Orpington, the former employer of George ELIOT. This same session ordered the apprehension of John GAGE, of Ferle. Similarly the Sheriff of Lancaster is ordered to search the homes of Richard HOUGHTON and Raffe EMERSON for “bookes and other superstitious stuffe” left by CAMPION. [Page 148]

By August 6, 1581, the Council directed be sent:

“A letter to the Busshoppe of Rochester that their Lordships have of convented before them Thomas ROPER, of Orpington in the countye of Kent, esquire, in whose howse upon searche made was found and apprehended a Masse prieste, with certain Popish trashe for massing, and upon conference with said ROPER, they fynding him verye obstinate in Religion, have (aswell in respect thereof as of his offense otherwise) committed him unto the prisonne of the Fleete, where their Lordships are desirous he should be conferred withal by some learned preacher for his reducing to conformetye ….” [pages 158-9]

*

In his later years, Father John COLLINGTON came to reside within the ROPER household at Well Hall, Eltham, Kent. And it was while therein residing that Sir Anthony ROPER, William ROPER and John COLLINGTON were fined for recusancy (refusing to attend Church of England church services) in 1631. And it was at the ROPER estate that Father COLLINGTON died on 19 Oct. 1635. The DNB biography says this:

"Colleton spent the latter part of his life in the house of Mr. Roper at Eltham in Kent, where he died on 19 Oct. 1635, aged 87."

*

Captain William ROPER was preceded to Virginia by his brother-in-law William EPPES, who arrived in the William and Thomas. Captaint ROPER was married to William EPPES' sister Mary EPPES (b Nov 1599, d 10 Aug 1625 - Ashford, Kent) on 03 Mar 1623 at Ashford, Kent. Also at Accomack with William EPPES were Captain ROPER's cousins John BLORE, Francis BLORE and Thomas PARKE.

Captain William EPPES departed Virginia after 1629 and settled at St. Christopher's, where he was made a member of the Council on 03 May 1630. It is to St. Christopher that we find Captain William ROPER's wife Hannah ROPER, age 23, bound aboard the Paul, Captain John ACKLIN, embarking at Gravesend 03 Apr 1635. See: http://books.google.com/books?id=VN_A5wlsjQQC&dq=starlin...

It seems most likely that Captain William ROPER had travelled to Virginia ahead of her, possibly with Captain William STONE (later Governor of Maryland). Captain EPPES is known to have corresponded with William STONE in 1633 asking that he take control of his Virginia plantation.

George COLLINGTON, age 20, who we believe was a kinsman of the Father John COLLINGTON who resided in the ROPER household at Well Hall, Eltham, travelled to Virginia aboard the Primrose, Captain DOUGLASS, embarking on 27 Jul 1635. Aboard this same ship was Captain ROPER's other servant (identified in Accomack Court records), Wm. STARLING (STERLING), age 18. See:

http://books.google.com/books?id=VN_A5wlsjQQC&dq=starlin... [at page 114]

Captain ROPER's third servant (and the other named on the 1636 Patent) was William YATES, who embarked on the Abigail on June 17, 1635, at age 14.

John YATES, who sailed to Virginia on the Truelove, seems to have transported two of Captain William ROPER's cousins of the SEABORNE family (Captain ROPER's mother was Katherine SEABORNE).

*

In the end, I believe it to be highly improbable that Lord Teynham's son, Captain William ROPER, who was educated at Oxford and served as the Sheriff and Commissioner of Accomack and as Burgess for the Eastern Shore would have been mistaken as to the identity of his servant. Given alternative possible interpretations of what the Patent says, I do not believe that this is a close question.

The likelihood that ROPER, after living within his cousin's household at Well Hall, Eltham, also inhabited by Father John COLLINGTON, would have happened to meet a COTTINGHAM from another place and brought him along as a servant seems pretty remote. Since a primary reason for emigration would have been flight to avoid religious persecution, it seems far more likely that he would have brought along a young kinsman of the family's trusty household priest!

*

I would be delighted to share other information and links with serious COTTINGHAM researchers. And I would welcome thoughtful critical discussion and, where possible, refutation of the points made herein.

Cottingham, Selby Somerset MD 1810-Noblesville, IN 1830

Researching Mary Cottingham who married James Selby circa 1810-1811. There is a marrige of a James Selby to Mary Cottingham 15 Jan 1811. Researchers give the birth of their first child Elizabeth (married Joshua Townsend Cottingham) as 17 Jan 1811. Other children: Sarah Ann Selby (married Catesby Dale), Eleanor (married John H. Leach), John Taylor Selby (married Rebecca Purdum). All these children were born in Maryland, between 1811-1820.

Some researchers say that this Mary Cottingham is the daughter of Thomas Cottingham and Comfort Laws, but I have my doubts. Someone has posted Thomas Cottingham's will on-line, so if it's correct, Thomas' daughter Mary is not the Mary Cottingham I'm researching. Have not yet checked an actual copy of the will, however.

Because of the marriage of Elizabeth to Joshua Townsend Cottingham, I've researched his background, thinking he might have been related to Elizabeth's mother in some way.

Mary Cottingham Selby died between 1840 and 1843 in Noblesville, Indiana. James Selby married, 2nd, Eleanor Betts, and had two children with her: James H. Selby and Mary Jane Selby. James Selby died 1855 and Eleanor by 1860. The guardianship of the two children was handled by Joshua Townsend Cottingham and later by his son Henry Austin Cottingham.

Kia ora Pam
I am still monitoring the board but haven't been active lately.I did have a query from Tricia Webb re Rosina, and presume both you and she are both related. Rosina had 10 children with Wolfran, and after Wofran died in Jan 1898, she went to Australia, and married again to George Samuel Taylor in Nov 1898. George died 7 days later and she was widowed again! Rosina died in July 1911. It would be good to swap info on Rosina's family. We are heading off to England in 4 weeks time to do family history research, mainly on the cottingham line in Suffolk. However, I did want to follow up on Rosina's birth family (eg Bethnall Green records). I don't have any info on Rosinas sister Louisa, but will keep in mind when checking records here to see what I can find. Rosina named her eldest daughter Louisa.
My direct email is elainec@clear.net.nz
Regards
Elaine Cottingham

Elaine
I hope you are still monitoring this board. Rosina Haselden is on our tree. She was the daughter of Lucy Thompson, sister of our 3X great grandfather Thomas Thompson. As rabid genealogists my sister and I have followed this line to New Zealand. Rosina Haselden married,as you seem to know, Jun 1852 Canterbury reg. 2a 697. In 1851 Rosina's sister, Louisa is staying with her widowed uncle Thomas Thompson(my 3X great grandfather)and his children in Enfield, Mdsx, but we never see Louisa again - we wondered if she in fact also went to New Zealand to be with her sister Rosina.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Pam

I am interested in John William Ray that married Leah Bell Cottingham in Lee County Alabama. I have some information on them but I am just beginning and any help would be appreciated. Their children:

Torry (or Twigie ??) (1906)
Ralph (1910)
Jim Frank (1913) marired Lula Mae Stillwell
Annie M. (1914)
Richard Ishmel (?) (1917)
Maggie (1920)
Ruth (1922)
Lois (1924)
Willie (1927)

Except for Jim Frank marrying Lula Mae Stillwell, I have no spouses for any of the children. I have no death dates either.

I have the father of John William Ray (born ~1885) as King Solomon Ray. King Solomon Married Eliza ____. They had Arizo Ray, James W. Ray, Lillie Ray, James H. Ray, and Annie Pearl Ray.

If you could add to any of this information, I would be most thankful. I am finding that there were many Rays in that area of Alabama in it makes it most difficult to keep things straight.

Tammy Barg
tbarg@tampabay.rr.com
Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 20 August 1903, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

TWO ALLEGED HORSE THIEVES HELD

Muskogee: Bob Wortham, who was with Ed Bashaw, horse thief, when he was killed by a farmer near Brush Hill, was arraigned before United States Commissioner Leekley and was bound over to the grand jury without bond. Milard Cottingham, another member of the gang, was held until more witnesses could be summoned. The two men are wanted in several places for different charges of larceny. They were with Ed Bashaw when he was killed by a farmer, who lay in some weeds waiting for the gang to come back and get some harness that had been stolen and concealed in the weeds. Worthman was shot in the shoulder.

Elizabeth Howard Cottingham 1828 Delaware

I have an Elizabeth Howard Cottingham in my family tree who married Hezekiah Vezey (1781 – 1843) in 1828 in Philadelphia. Both of them were born in Delaware. Children: Almira Bradford, Henry Clay, Thomas Jefferson, Julia. Hezekiah was from Dagsboro Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware. Don’t know where in Delaware Elizabeth was from. The Vezeys were originally from Worcester County, Maryland. Possibly the Cottinghams were from there too. Any help in placing her lineage would be appreciated.

Joshua Townsend Cottingham and Elizabeth Selby, Noblesville, IN

I am researching the Selby family. I know that Elizabeth Selby married Joshua Townsend Cottingham. Elizabeth's father was James Selby, born 1788 in MD. Supposedly, Elizabeth's mother was Mary Cottingham (born 1780-1790), daughter of Thomas (1732) and Comfort Laws Cottingham, but I have absolutely no proof of that, just information I've found on the web.

A Mary Cottingham married a James Selby in Worcester, MD in 1810 or 1811--I don't have the exact date in front of me at the moment--but I don't know for sure that it's my James Selby.

However, my James Selby had a very close relationship with Joshua Townsend Cottingham, who was guardian for James' small children from his second marriage to Eleanor Betts in Noblesville, IN in 1843. After Joshua's death, his son Henry Austin Cottingham served as guardian for the two children.

Does anyone have any information regarding Elizabeth Selby Cottingham? Thanks.

I was given permission to check an old family cemetery on private property today in Worcester County.

The five headstones still above ground were for the following:

Grace Cottingham 21 Nov 1771 - 11 May 1850 (This is Grace Townsend Cottingam Cottingham d/o Solomon Townsend 1744-1808 & Mary Fleming. Grace mar. 1st Joshua who died bef. Oct. 1795; 2nd James [see below])

James Cottingham 28 Oct 1769 - 06 Oct 1832 (son of John Cottingham d. 1769 & Esther Hopkins)

Susannah Johnson d. 14 Dec 1822 (she was the dau. of Joshua & Grace above, and the wife of Isaac Smith Johnson)

Mary Grace Johnson d. 02 Oct 1856 (she was the dau. of Joshua Cottingham Johnson & Virginia Cottingham; and granddau. of Isaac & Susannah)

{Virginia Johnson} (broken, and top of stone & name are missing, but death date known from other records indicates this is for Virginia Cottingham Johnson) d. 19 Jan 1860

There may be other stones, or pieces of them, under the underbrush. Only one stone is still standing upright.

Rob Hall
Snow Hill, MD

NOTE: The owner does not wish the exact location to be given for privacy reasons.
