What era are you talking about? I have Coughlans in Blackrock. One was Daniel Coughlan who left Ireland in 1905. His mother was a Lyons. We know very little once he left Ireland. He could possibly been in Nevada at one point. He was from the famous hurling family of Coughlans from Blackrock, Cork. He was related to the hurler Eudie Coughlan.I would be interested in finding out any information as to what happened Daniel once he arrived in the US. Thank you.

I am seeking info about my great-great grandmother, Nora Coughlan, married to Daniel McCarthy. They had at least one son, Thomas, who came to New York City in 1888. According to my grandfather they all came from Kinsale. They do appear in Griffith's, renting from the Earl of Bandon.

Hi, I'm a Coughlan tracing back my family roots in Waterford. My roots go back to coughlans who came from Cappoquin. Common placenames that have come up are: Affane, Bogheravaghera, Chruaichtain, Cappoquin, Aglish, Lismore..... Let me know if any of these make sense. I havent come across a thomas in that era, although a Michael Coughlan born 1902 called one of his sons Thomas in 1948?

Hope ive been some help.

Stephen

I spent a little time trying to find these people in records. They were probably the same generation as the children of Richard Coughlan and Mary Roche, but a bit younger. The children of my line are Thomas Coughlan 1855, Patrick 1857, Richard 1859, Thomas 1860, Catherine 1862, John 1865, and Honora (Nanore) who married Michael Clifford (I can't find her Baptismal or birth record. I tried to do a bit of research on the Familysearch site but couldn't find a Johanna and a Richard born to the same parents. The same thing with the Irish Roots page...... On one of the pages I found a Johanna Coughlan born to a John in 1868 and a Richard born to a John in 1872. When I tried to put the mother's surname in on the Irish Roots page, the same mother's name did not come up. One set of parents was John Coughlan and Ellen Finn. I was wondering if you knew who the grandparents of Richard and Johanna were.

If you gave me an idea of when they were born, I can check my information and get back to you. My email address is janfortado"at" comcast.net. If you have either eircom.net or Verizon, you can reach me at my alternate address: janfortado2007"at"hotmail.com (using "at" to prevent spamming). Or you can email me on the boards. Your message appeared four times. Not sure what happened. I look forward to hearing from you. Jan

Nancy
Your Coughlin brothers are born about the same generation that I believe MY GG was. His name is Michael Coughlin & although I know he was born in Ireland, I can't locate a date.
I believe his first son, Michael, died at age one. His next son was named Daniel and there was another named William. However, in the 1910 census Michael's wife, Mary A. Healy listed that they had 8 children and only six were living. I did send a note to an older cousin because I just don't have any stories to go on. I know their son, Daniel was born in NY in 1886. If I find anything else out that sheds some light on the facts, I will reconnect. Thank you for your help so far.

I have traced my Coughlin ancestors to the townlands of Ballyvarra and Garraun in County Limerick. The townlands are adjacent, and the civil birth registrations filed by my ggrandfather Michael Coughlan refer to both. I was able to pinpoint Michael Coughlan's farm by comparing the Griffith's Valuation maps and data with Google Earth maps.

My grandfather Patrick Coughlin emigrated with an older brother John c. 1890. They took a boat that went through the St. Lawrence Seaway and landed at Cleveland, OH. They both moved to Hammond, IN to take jobs at the Standard Oil refinery that was being built in Whitiing, IN. There are no Canadian records of immigrants for that period, so I cannot get a specific date on their arrival in the US.

For some reason, my grandfather spelled his surname Coughlin and his brother John spelled it Coughlan. One of John's sons moved to Chicago, and we have many Coughlan relatives there.

Given the close proximity of my ggrandfather's farm to Clonmacnois, my hunch is that he descended from that particular set of Coughlan/Coughlins who were known as the McCoughlans. The Coughlan/Coughlins from County Cork were known as the O'Coughlans.

Thank you for your reply. I have been researching Coughlan and you must have picked up a reply to someone. I have approx 18,000 Coughlan's in Ireland, England and a few from around the world. I also have different spellings of the name, as in one case it changes from census to census.
I travel to Dublin and research there, and do the odd search for people. Thank you once again for your reply

You indicated that you were having trouble finding Coughlins through Ancestry.com.

When you type in the last name, are you remembering to change it from "default"? You should start with "restrict to exact or similar". Do the same with the first name.

I did, plus I gave him a birth date of 1860 +/- 10 years and a birth location in Ireland. I rec'd 761 hits in the census alone.

Nancy

I'm afraid I can be of no help. My G Grandfather's name was William Coughlan. His Father was James and his brother was Thomas. They are from Dublin. William emigrated in 1903. They are the only Coughlan's I have any info on. I don't know of anyone named Healy in the family.

Have you tried the Ellis Island website. You might have some luck locating Michael and Mary.
Ken

Ken, I have been trying to locate some information about my great grandfather, Michael Coughlin, who was born in Ireland. I have been wondering why there are only a few Coughlin's listed in the US. (Every time I put the name in for a search in ancestry, I get Collins. I have found Michael's wife, Mary Healy, in the 1910 census. She is listed as married. In 1920, Mary is a widow. I feel like every turn I make, he slips away. Mary was born in 1865 in Ireland. She came to the US in 1878. (I have to check that date.) To add to the mystery...all of the Coughlins are buried in one large grave...except for Michael. If you can't help me on this specific person, I would enjoy hearing about the Coughlin/Coughlans of Ireland.

Hi Pat,

I am a descendant of Lillie Coughlan (she was my great grandmother, called Gongie by all her grandkids - her legal name, I think, was Sarah Elizabeth Lillian - she appears in the birth registrations as Female Coughlan). She was still alive when I was a child. She married Thomas McAstocker - they moved to Nelson BC and settled in Penticton where Thomas worked as an engineer. You can find them in the 1911 census in Nelson.

I believe Frederick (Lillie's brother) became a dentist and may have moved out to Vancouver (?)

Christine (McAstocker) Hayes

Sorry!! I don't look into the site very often. But, could you explain your question more fully, concerning Stewart Coghlan, of Guelph, Ont. 1827? -- To the best of my knowledge. This family originated from the Offlay area, of either King/Queen's County, Ireland into Canada, in 1827. I have very little info, on the relatives, left behind in Ireland. -- There's a "maybe" on a "Thomas" being the father of "Stewart Coghlan." ---- thanks. -- Pat Morris

Looking for information on Mary Veronica Coghlan/Coughlan b c 1830/32 in County Clare, exact place unknown. She was Roman Catholic. Her Parents were John Coghlan, farmer, and his wife Mary (surname unknown)according to her death certificate. We believe this is the same Mary who came to NSW, Australian the Earl of Elgin n 1853 from Rathkeale in Limerick, where her parents were still living. I think they may have moved from Co Clare to Limerick. I have no information on her siblings if any.

There was a John Coghlan b c1803 Killaloe and Mary Morgan b c 1807 Killaloe Munster Province who married at the Diocese of Killaloe in 1828, whose children and information i would like to find out about, to see if they may possibly be my Mary's family.

Any information on this family would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
