Hello Anne
Many thanks for your message. This enables me to feel confident of the link between Triton Coulling, and Sarah Shanks (Coulling), and our connection.
Four of the twenty-two brothers of Sarah Shanks can now be named. In addition to David c1795, David c1804, and Triton b1802 which you have discovered there is of course James b1819 in Barking Essex and d 1May 1901 in Grimsby.
The names of the witnesses at the m of David Coulling and Mary Annsworth have no family connection so far as I am yet aware.
Again many thanks, I look forward with interest to any further discoveries you make.
Best wishes for your future research.
Malcolm

Hello again Malcolm,
I visited the London Metropolitan Archives last week and traced Triton Coulling's baptism at St Ann's church Limehouse on 14 November 1802. His parents were David Coulling, a tailor, and Mary, living at Church lane. Other Coulling baptisms for the same parents were David 19 April 1795 and David 10 June 1804. A Mary Anne was baptised 20 May 1807 daughter of John Coulling, also a tailor, and Mary living at Gill Street. I didn't find Sarah by the way.
David Coulling and Mary Annsworth were married at St Matthews church Bethnal Green on 6 February 1794 in the presence of John White and James Nelson.
I think all this ties my branch into the descendants of David Coulling 1731. Unfortunately I ran out of time, but hope to get back to research further.
My name is Gordon Coulling. I am descended from David Coulling and Mary Annesworth through James Coulling born 1819 who married Ann Arnold.
They all moved to Grimsby in the early 1860's and their son James David travelled the world before settling in Grimsby and marrying my G/Grandmother. They are both in the Grimsby cemetry. James David's story was printed in the local newspaper.
I would be interested to hear from Ann Edwards or Malcolm Graydon Baum

Anne

Sorry for error with David Nathanial Coulling. He appears in my records as shown by you.

Have recently conducted lengthy correspondence with author of "The Coulling Family Genealogy". He should be updating this site soon to include contributions from me. Briefly these include:
David Coulling (possibly s/o David & Jane, c 18 Apr 1731 Chadlington, Oxon.) m Elizabeth Tidy 2 Mar 1756, St Dunstans Stepney. Their only male child with issue in England was David. He m Mary Annsworth 6 Feb 1794, St. Matthews Bethnal Green. She was born in Diss, Norfolk <1775>. They were parents of Sarah who may have been twin sister of Triton.

The family were noncomformists, which may explain difficulty in finding Baptismal records. They became Methodists and "begat" Wesleyan Ministers both in England and US. Are Triton's religious affiliations known?

Malcolm,

I've just been surfing and wondered if you are aware of "The Coulling family Genealogy" website.

This names a James Coulling 1756-1807 born in St Ann's parish, Limehouse the oldest of four children of David Coulling and Miss Tiday. A tailor by trade he sailed to Maryland, America in July 1775 aboard "Fortune".

Malcolm,

This is interesting! I feel there is a very good chance you are right about Sarah and Triton being twins, but unfortunately I have no record of Triton's parents yet. David is a family name - Triton had a son and a grandson with that name. Triton (obviously a name for a fisherman!) was described as a mariner on his son's marriage certificate in 1850 and still a fisher man in 1881.

I have no James in my tree, but I have a contact - Gordon Coulling - who is his great, great grandson. We have not yet proved a connection there either.

I think there is one mistake in your information. Triton born 1853 was Triton Senior's grandson - the son of Triton Senior's son David Nathaniel born 1831. Triton Senior's son Triton was born in 1838. He died before the 1881 census. He married Maria Shelitoe. Another contact has sent me photographs of this branch.

Hello Ann,
I am descended from David Coulling and Mary Annesworth who lived in Limehouse at the time of the birth of Triton Coulling. They had 22 sons and daughter Sarah, my gt.gt. grandmother, who was also born in 1803. It is known that there were sets of twins in the family. I have wondered for some time whether Triton was her twin, having discovered in the 1881 census that he was in Great Grimsby and a fisherman. His wife Sarah was born in Barking in1803. (At the same time his son Triton b 1853 was a lodger in Dean Street and unmarried.)
The Sarah who may have been Triton's twin married William Shanks who was a fishing smack owner. So a common occupation may also be a link.
Do you know if James Cooling b 1819 Barking, d 1901Grimsby was a brother of Triton?
I have a Coulling family ancestry with details of above David's
parents and siblings etc., but all descendants in England stem from him. If we could establish a link, I would be pleased to share any information which might be helpful..
Can you help with above please?
Triton Coulling born Limehouse, London 1803 was my great, great, great grandfather. He had a son Triton William Coulling born Romford, Essex 1838 and a grandson Triton Coulling born Stepney, London 1853. As Triton is such an unusual name might there be a connection? I know of family members living in Grimsby, Caistor, Bethnal Green, Romford, Hull and Manchester at various times

I have a number of Stephens in my family extending back to 1616 (Stephen, baptised Chadlington). As far as I have discovered most/all Stephens born in Oxfordshire over the following 150 years were in some way related to my family. I would be interested in knowing if you have any information about your ancestors pre-1800 for which period I have quite a lot of information about my family who lived in the Spelsbury/Chadlington area of the county from before 1550 until ca. 1775.

Greetings to everyone researching the Couling name.

Could you give me more information please? Florence, Mary, and Frederick James are Couling names that I am trying to sort out. My father mentioned a photograph of his grandmother sitting in her rocker. He told me that she returned to Ireland after the family had come to Canada. Yours is the first Irish connection I have found.
