Hello. Yes i have a robert southwell coultas, born, 1903 stainton dale. Sounds like same one. know nothing about him though, but would be interested in knowing more fom your side. i have a a tree with genesconnected, so if you go on that website its all there. joanne. There seems to be atleast one southwell in each generation, so yes jane has alot to answer for!

Just reading the posts on this board and I think that Jane Southwell has a lot to answer for, as it would explain Robert Coultas's middle name.

He Married my Great Aunt Gladys and had at least one child - Raymond.

I found an interesting loop in the Coultas and Wells families that settled in Ventura, California from Scott, Illinois. The granddaughter of Benjamin Coultas(1803) Emma Elizabeth Coultas(1866) married George Washington Wells(1858) the grandson of Alexander Wells(1783) whose granddaughter Ruth Ann Wells(1849) marrried William Walter Coultas(1846) who is the grandson of Benjamin Coultas(1803.)

Edward Coultas 1785

Hi I'm looking for any information about Edward Coultas born 1785 in Eight and Forty, East Yorkshire. I think his wife was called Mary Dales. He had at least 2 children. Hannah Coultas born 1820 in Newport by Howden. Also Abel Coultas born 1826 in Newport East Yorks.

Both Hannah and Abel moved to Ackworth, West Yorks as adults.
I feel like I've hit a brick wall so any info would be interesting.

It has Greek origins, and goes back in England as far the Church records started: in the 1400's.

I am researching family history for a friend. We live in England. She was born a Coultas, and her grandfather Robert and your Mary Ann were brother and sister! I went to the Records Office to look at the ones for Seamer, Scarborough, Yorkshire, and found a lot of brothers and sisters, also some other relatives. If you are still interested, I will send you the details. My friend is in her 70's and is very interested to know anything about her family as she has lost touch. I don't know if anyone has already responded to your message becuase it is such a long time ago, but I think William H Wellesley Coultas was my Grandfather. He did not live in London but was married in London in 1931 (or thereabouts)

there is a report in our local paper dated 22 february 1873 regarding a court case in the then town of west hartlepool concerning the bigamous second marriage of robert coultas who was already married to mary thompson in april 1866. if anyone requires the full report please reply direct.

I dont know of any cecil in my family tree but, unfortutately coultas is very popular throughout the scarborough area. You could go by your oldest male relative you know, go the scarborough library (if you live near area) and have a look at their records (try to find his father) or try familyhistory.com (free site) and type in your names you know (before and upto 1881 census). I'm stuck on b1772(c) james coultas, cant get back any further. I've heard coultas name originated not in the british isles, but your theory is probably right as i've heard there's some kind of 'coultas candy' made in scotland.

I have been trying to research the Coultas family name.

I have been told it could mean 'keeper of colts' (horses) in Scotland.

My husbands family came from Scarbrough but as we have no older members alive it has difficult to gleen information.

My husband is Cecil COULTAS (called after his father)and he has 5 brothers.
John William Neale COULTAS (Neale being his mothers maiden name)is one, but it seems to be that 'John William' is an ongoing 'family' name.

Hi Enid, not sure what Ted has told you about Southwell Coultas, as it was a year ago, but I can tell you what i know incase its of interest to you as Southwell is in my line also.William Coultas married Jane Southwell 1831 in Great Driffield, southwell was born 9 may 1841, he married elizabeth clarke in 1862 and moved to austrailia in 1865. Two other brothers moved to austrailia also thomas, born 1847, brompton, moved to austrailia in 1868, and james, born 1850, who married rachel cook, 1867, date of move unknown. hope this of some use to you, joanne.

My gg-grandfather was George A. Coultas. he was B. 1857. He married a Margaret L. I believe they were from Illinois. If anyone know anything about his parents I would appreciate any info.

I have an Ann Coultas, who married Samuel Featherstone on 21 Jan 1781 in Cayton, North Yorks. She died on 22 May 1819. No other info I'm afraid.

The above had a child called John, who was christened 23 feb 1840 in Wold Newton, Yorkshire.

All other children were born Wykeham, near Scarborough.

Does this mean anything to anyone?

Hi, just read your message. Names don't mean anything to me, hopefully someone will read it and help you.

I know if days gone by they had big families, so do these names mean anything to you?

John William Coultas (born 1878) married Sarah Waites Wright (born 1880) in 1899.

John Williams father was John (born 1840) who married Hannah Hill in 1871.

Johns father was William coultas (born 1792) who married Jane Southwell (born 1813) in 1831 (think this accurate)

From this point I'm stuck as can't Johns father.

Do you have any of these marriages in your line?

My Great Aunt is visiting from England and I asked her if we had a John Williams Coultas born at that time in Scarborough and she confirmed that we did. I'm a little fuzzy on names and dates, however one thing that sticks out is that my Great Grandmother Muriel married (?) Coultas and had Peter, June and Eve. Muriel's husband left her for another woman and changed his name. No one knows where he is even buried as his assumed name was unknown. Maybe this story rings a bell for someone?

His father was John who married Hannah Hill, his father was William who married Jane Southwell, his father was (hopefully) George who married Mary Simpkin. Does this mean anything to you? Or anyone else who is looking for Coultas in Scarborough.

If Carol Brett who has been talking to Henry is still looking on this site - I am related to you, as I have a Southwell Coultas been a brother to my ggg grandad William who married Jane Southwell. Maybe you know about William?

I do have a John Coultas, born around that time in that area in my family. I will speak to my parents and get details. My father and his family came to Canada from England in 1960, all of his family before him resided in England, most around the Yorkshire area. I'll post back when I recieve info.

James and Edward Coultas, North Yorkshire

Can anyone help. Two other researchers and myself are absolutely stuck! James and Edward Coultas were brothers and both were born in Sawdon, near Brompton, North Yorkshire. James married Hannah Smiddy in 1798 in Brompton Church, Edward married a lady called Grace. Edward and his wife had no children. I cannot find the baptism records for these two. I presume that James would have been born about 1778. I would be grateful if anyone could help us to find the birth and parents of these two Coultas people. Who Was Mrs. Dwight Coultas of St. Louis, MO. in our Ancestor's Will of 1979?

Merdeces Hoover Hensley died in 1979 and included Mrs. Dwight Coultas of St. Louis in her Will. We would like to know the relationship between them. Merdeces was the wife of Perry P. Hensley and the daughter of Joseph L. Hoover and Mary Ellen Byrnes. She was widowed at the time of her death and had no children. She was a professor of art at The University of Washington and lived in Snohomish County, Washington at the time of her death.

I can tell you the Coultas name originates from Yorkshire England, it goes back to the begining of the 17th century that I can be sure of.

Mary Ann was born in 1889 in Seamer UK.
She had an older sister Mary Elizabeth. The family imigrated to the US and Canada in the years 1900-08.

My maiden name was Hazelwood & my grandmother was Dorothy--Grandma Dorothy had a twin sister named Dinda ( Evans) Coultas & they lived in Jacksonville, Il. I would like to trace my ancestors but i dont really know where to start, the only name i have so far is Thomas hobbs coultas he was married to kathleen and they lived in filey yorkshire.
