Dear Robin,
Thank you for the post which I've only noticed today!

My Simeon had a sister called Margaret who was born in Selside, Kendal, Westmoreland in 1844. She is probably a little early to be your Margaret, but you never know. I could never trace this Margaret again anywhere.

Do you have any more information on her at all? I have gathered a lot of information on Westmorland Coulthards and Coulthwaites and would be happy to have a look at them for you.

Kind regards
Sue

Hello Lynne

I do remember my mum talking about an aunty Maggie and I think we have some photos somewhere - probably with my sister. We live in Brisbane. My mother, Lily, married Sven Nielsen in Home Hill in 1934. I am still dabbling with the family tree and have taken a few wrong turns. I will look at your family tree, thank yu.

Best wishes
Sandra

Hello Sandra
We must be related! My grandmother was Maggie Coulthard, a daughter of William and Hannah. Since my post last year, I've done some research and I believe that William's parents were John Coulthard and Mary Greggs. Mary's sister, Esther, married a Glenwright and an extended family migrated to Australia and settled in Charters Towers. Separately, Hannah Bailey's sister married a Douglass and they migrated and settled in Toowoomba.

My family tree is public, so please have a look.
regards, L.

I know that you posted this a long time ago but I have just started research into my Coulthard family and therefore just found your post.
I have been trying to find a copy of the book you mentioned without success, I also live in the North East in York and wondered if you can tell me where you bought it, I am hoping that it is somewhere near here. Any help would be much appreciated.
Alison

My grt, grt,grt grandfather was William Coulthard born 1825. He had 4 children, Robert, Michael, Thomas and Elizabeth. He married a woman called Ann but i have 3 surnames for her, Banks, Chambers and Goull with a 4th possibility of Ord and I have no idea which one was right. I am descended from Robert 1850 who married Esther Richardson, they seem to have lived in Northumberland and Monkwearmouth. I know it's not much to go on but does anyone have any information on this family that will help me work out which line to follow back?

Hello
I'm trying to track the parents of William Coulthard born around 1882 in Durham. Two possibilities for his parents - John Coulthard (born abt 1820 in Lanchester, Durham) and Mary Greggs (born abt 1821 in Stanhope, Durham) or John Coulthard (born abt 1817 in Weardale, Durham) and Frances (maiden name unknown).
William and Hannah migrated to Australia in 1887 aboard the Wahroonga and lived in Charters Towers.
many thanks
lynne

She married William Coulthard where they became agricultural labourers. She had a child named George and he was born in Hamsterley, Durham, and another child named Henry. I know Sarah died between the years of 1927-1935. I really want to know how old she was when she died.

I am looking for information on George Coultard born about 1861 in Hamsterley, near Bishop Auckland, Durham, UK. He married a woman named Mary Ann and had a child named Frances Nina Coulthard. He may have had more children. He might have lived in Barnard Castle for some time, and I would love to know his wifes maiden name and the names of his parents. I think his mother was named Sarah Fawcett but I want to know for certain. I would appreciate any more information on George Coulthard and his family.

Hi there,

After looking into my family tree I have traced my ancestors back to Durham, England. There furthest back I can get is to 1790ish with a Ralph Coulthard who married a Margeret Bones. One of my great grand aunts is called Jane Coulthard, however she was apparently born in 1840 from what I can tell, so possibly not the same Jane. Jane and Mary appear to be family names with the Coulthards as my sister and I both share Jane as our middle name. I am hoping to trace my tree much further back with the help of my grandfather who has been working on a book. Hopefully my tree and associated information will prove useful.

-Emma

Hi

The book is called Coulthard, History of a Surname and was written by AJ Coulthard, sadly AJ is no longer with us. I don't think it was ever published by a big name so there are very few copies around but there certainly are people with a copy who could help. If you put the book details into the internet, you may get something?

Do you know any of your relatives?

If you put what you know on here, you may make a connection.

Good luck

Debbie

Hi Dave,

My Coulthard ancestors were from Durham also. The furthest I've traced them back to so far is to William Coulthard born about 1815. He gives his birth place as Edmondbyers in the 1851 census, Heworth in 1861 and Scotswood, Northumberland in 1881. He married an Ann born about 1813 in Heworth. I've found a likely marriage in 1836 in Lamesley between a William Coulthard and Ann Newby Robson.

Do we have a connection?

Regards,
Chris French

Hi,

Can't really help other than say if you join one of the electrol roll sites ie 192.com etc... there are quite a few so shop around, You can usually find possible descendants. I recently sent out a generic letter to 22 people all over England. I had about 12 replies, 2 of which were actual descendants so it may be worth a go?

I have been researching Coulthard my self for about 18 months, a cousin I found on here has being researching them for 20 years.

The 1841 census finds most Coulthards in the cumbria area.

There is a book called Coulthard, the history of a surname. a few survive, sadly I do not have one, but I did put a request on here and a lady called Dawn Orange helped me with info from the book. Old charts etc. It appears Coulthards may have originated from Scotland. I have traced back to 1727 Harrington/Dearham using the charts in the book.

My tree on here is called Fairbrother, it is a public tree so you are welcome to look at what I have but my initial thought is no obvious connection.

Maybe try some of these sites for older stuff?

Allhallows Parish; Bishops Transcripts 1663-1837 early births, deaths and marriages
Allonby Chapelry Baptisms and Burials 1774-1837
Aspatria St Kentigerns Parish Church Baptism Register
Bromfield Parish Registers has Baptisms & Marriages 1813-1837, Burials 1654 -1916 and Bromfield Churchyard Memorial Inscriptions
Dearham Parish; Bishops Transcripts 1663-1837 early births, deaths and marriages
Flimby Parish Bishops Transcripts 1713-1812 early births, deaths and marriages
Garrigill, St. John's Church Baptisms 1813-1837
Gilcrux Parish Bishops Transcripts 1663-1837 early births, deaths and marriages
Holme Cultam Bishops Transcripts 1838-1871
Holme St Cuthbert Burials 1850 - 1900 & Baptisms 1850-1900
Holme St Pauls Baptisms 1850-1900
Holme Cultram Bishops Transcripts Surname Index 1663-1837
Holme Cultram Parish Church Burials 1871 - 1902
Holme St Pauls Burials 1850-1900 and Baptisms 1850 -1900
Kirkby Stephen; Baptisms 1647-1720 , Burials 1647- 1773
Martindale Baptisms 1633-1748 and Burials 1683-1904
Matterdale & Watermillock Wesleyan Chapel, Ulcatrow Baptisms
Matterdale Burials 1634-1847
Some Bishop's Transcripts of Cumberland, England has a large collection of early parish records
Stapleton Parish Church Baptisms 1813-1839 & Burials 1813 to 1839
Watermillock Burials 1678-1812
Westmorland Parish and Probate Records 27,500 records including baptisms/christenings, burials, marriages, tombstone inscriptions, obituaries, tax lists and wills.
Westnewton St Matthews Parish Church Baptisms 1857-1932
Wigtown Parish Bishops Transcripts 1663-1837 early births, deaths and marriages

Good hunting

Debbie

I'm interested in find descendants of Margaret Coulthard born 1877 in Longtown, Carlisle, Cumberland England. She married Andrew Graham in 1897 in Carlisle and according to the 1911 UK cansus had 3 children. Thomas (1898), Robina Maggie(1899), and William Coulthard (1902). The latter married my cousin once removed Irene Leah Bruton in 1928. Any information of any of these would be apprediated.

Hello. Yes, I think we are related. My grandmother's mom was a Coulthard who married a Teasdale. I have actually been to New Diggins which is not far from the Teasdale farm which is still across the road from the old Coulthard farm. T Oddly enough, I just saw that a Coulthard was either a witness or the minister at the wedding of g. parents in the 1700's, in Northumberland. Teasdale family came over in 1850 on the Excelsior. I also just found the "local" Coulthards listed as part of the county home guard during the civil war. It seems everyone from that area were miners. Drop me a line if you like. I've only just started digging around.

john coulthard born 1845 pimlico, london

hi, recently started trcaing the coulthard line in my family and wondered if anyone could help.
My great great grandfather is John Coulthard born about 1845 in Pimlico, London, I think his parents were Robert (born 1815, Carlisle) and Margaret Coulthard (born 1819, Knottingly, Yorkshire) but the only connection I have is a Sarah J coulthard, daughter of widowed Margaret living together in 1881, she was also born in pimlico, so I am assuming she was Johns sister. John named 3 of his children Margaret, Robert and Sarah J. Can anyone confirm what I have found to be correct?
I believe Roberts parents to be William and Elizabeth Coulthard, both born 1790, Weatheral, cumberland.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Carla

He became a teacher and in time a headteacher and lived in the area of Kent and then latterly Hastings with his wife and children.

It was fascinating to hear from you though - please let us know how you go on!

Kind regards,

Sue

Hi
I see you haven't posted since 2005 so this is a long shot. I haven't any info re your ancestry I'm afraid, but I have a set of bronze candlesticks, one in the form of a Cavalier and the other a Roundhead which each have a plate with the following inscription:
To Mr. S. Coulthwaite. from his teachers and scholars as a token of deepest regard, 25th March 1887.
Presumably he wasa headteacher somewhere.
My mum bought them from auction many years ago and passed them onto me about 10 years ago because I have always liked them.I would love to know more about him
Probably not your Simeon, but maybe you might know of other Coulthwaites that he might be related to?
