My husband's GGgrandmother was Aurelia Counter, b. 1868 in Illinois. She married one John Willette (I always figured it was Ouillette or Ouellette) abt. 1885. Their daughter, Amanda Maude was born in Muskegon, Michigan. They then moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan where they lived out their lives. I am quite sure that we are talking about the same family here as I also find references to Illinois and Rhinelander. I have a photo of an older Aurelia and husband John if you're interested. I'm also trying to find out about Eva Counter who married Castonguay (sp).

I have found references to Edward J. and Eli being Aurelia's brothers, but that's all the farther I've gone back.

Can you send me more information? My husband's cousin recently contacted me for more and I just don't have it. I am willing to give you what I've collected here.

Olivier Counter was Born in Canada...place unknown,He Ended up in Wisconsin, where he stayed for a time with his wife Agneta Thebaut( Agnet is thought to have been Born in Wisconsin) and had several children. One of them was my Great Grand Father Louis Counter born in 1873.
in 1874 they can be found in the 1880 census in Blue Earth Minnesota @ which time they went and got a Birth Certificate for Louis and his Sponsors were Felix Counter and a Sophia Bon efont (not sure about the spelling of her last name) Olivier Counter used to talk about Kenora Canada and of Relatives in Manitoba Canada,But all we Have from Canada is a letter from a Sears in Manitoba, asking.... are there any of our people left or alive,But I also have know Idea,on how the Sears Family fits in.
Please let me know if you find anything.any kind of info would be Great.......Felix Counters family has been in touch with me and they are at the same dead end.

Tim

Actually there is a history of the Contois family here in Manitoba Canada and a great many of them speak the Ojibway (sometimes called Saulteaux) language. I didn't really ask alot of my history from my father (who passed away in 1987) and my mother's memory is pretty hazy. All I am aware of is that our family migrated from Kamsack Sasketchewan to what is now called the Pine Creek First Nation in central Manitoba.

Felix and Olivier were the ones trying to hide the fact that they were Indian.because Olivier Counter and his wife Agneta Thebaut whom he met and married up by Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin had children that didn't look Indian either, one of them was my Great Grand Father Louis Counter and he said that he used to ask his Dad Olivier all the time who his Grand Parents were and where they lived and he was told to stop asking because it was not a good thing for people too know that you have Indian blood in you !!and that they were from some where in Canada.some times Kenora Canada was brought up in conversation.Louis also said that Felix and Olivier knew how to talk Chippewa too the Indians in the area

I can email you copies of the pictures I have of Amelia and her husband. I don't have the originals. I also have a copy of Felix's death record - he died 21 Apr 1915 in Sherbourne County, MN and is buried in Santiago cemetery. His father was not listed and the mother listed is Felix's wife. I did find a census record in 1850 (Marinett District 44, Brown County, WI) with a Felix Countoure, age 45 born in Canada. No other people are listed with him - but believe that this might be the father. My Felix was married in Brown County in 1854. I believe you are right about them trying to hide their Indian heritage - however when you see the pictures of Amelia, especially when she was young, I am not sure how you could not know that they were Indian.
I have Julia and Joseph in the 1855 Lee MA state census, living with their children in the same house with Peter and Julia Counter, Julia Jr.'s parents. I'm descended from Herrick Counter, Julia Jr.'s brother. She named one of her kids Herrick, so they apparently got along. Happy to trade info, especially about Peter and Julia Sr., on whom I am somewhat stuck. I have pix of their gravesite in St. Joseph's cemetery in Pittsfield, next to their sons Octave and Dufield. Until I saw this thread, I didn't realize who Joseph and Julia Gero were.

I am also researching this family. I'm descended from Ezekial's brother Herrick. I am interested in any info you might have re Peter and Julia and their whereabouts up to the point where they landed in the Lee MA area. I'm also interested in any documentation that "Counter" is a derivative of "Contois." My research indicates that some of their children were born in "St.John's" Canada (Newfoundland maybe, although it wasn't Canadian then?) in the 1830's, and the very non-French given names led me to surmise that they might be "Caunters," an English family that might have spent some time in Newfoundland. Happy to trade info.

My family name is Counter. I have sketchy details after my Grandfather because he died relatively young and my Grandmother did not talk about his family. His name was Reuben William Counter, son of John Reuben Counter. Born on 2 June 1905 he had two brothers Alfred and Frederick. I know little more than that. The family come from Essex UK

If you can help me fill in the gaps and extend my knowledge I would love to hear from you.

I am a direct descendant of Felix's so would certainly like to find his parents though I have never researched in Canada, so that is new territory for me.
Re: Felix Counter and wife Sophia

When looking in the genealogy.com in canada i found a posting and it said: Felix Cote (Counter) & Sophie Goodchild (Bonnenfant) were married 1858 Wisconsin then the family later moved to Minnesota early 1860's. Felix was born in Canada 1830-31 while Sophia was born June 24, 1880 in New York or Vermont of parents of Canadian ancestry as well. The parents of Sophia were Joseph Goodchild (Bonnenfant) and Lorina Gregor (Gregoire) who came from Quebec to NY.
I would like to find the parents of Felix Counter and i could help on this side of the Quebec border. Counter could also be Contois as a French Canadian name. The Counter name can also originate from England but in this case it is a French Canadian name change. Same for Goodchild which is Bonnenfant, a direct translation. The e-mail address from Canada is marcel.benoit@videotron.ca After reading this i looked up a photo of Buffalo Bill Cody which is also spelled Cote in Canada. I found several pictures of him on the internet that match a picture that i found in a old photo album that belonged to the Counter family. The rest of the pictures in that album are of French Canadian ancestors. If anyone has a picture of Felix maybe we could match it up with the pictures in the old Counter photo album. There a lot of pictures of ancestors that we can't identify.

I am looking for information on Felix Counter b. Abt 1831 in Canada and his wife Sophia. The 1880 census shows them living in Minnesota with three children: Amelia Counter (my ancestor), Delia Counter and Louis(?) Counter. Amelia married John Stevens b. Oct 18, 1854 in Wisc or NY on March 11, 1880 in Freeborn County, MN. Their children were said to be half Indian. I am not sure if this from the Stevens side or the Counter side. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. I hope that we are looking for the same family. My Felix was in Alden, Freeborn County, in the 1880's but the census says that he was born in Canada abt. 1831 and I believe that he might have married Sophia in Wisc. I know that Blue Earth isn't that far from Alden, so could be possible. The thing about the Indian blood seems to fit in too. I don't have a lot as I only recently found Felix in the census of 1880, but I would love to hear what you have on him. Perhaps it will help to figure out if your Felix and my Felix are the same. Please feel free to email me at smoorhea@usd.edu

I may have a clue as to Felix's father. The 1850 Census for Merinett, Brown County WI shows a Felix Contois/Contoure 45 a mechanic who was born in Canada. Any chance you could check the census records prior to 1850 in Canada and see if you can find this Felix. If we can isolate the possible locations, perhaps we could locate birth records for Felix and Oliver, and a marriage record for Felix Sr.

Both were born in Muskegon, Michigan, Eva in 1891 and (Amanda) Maude in 1887.

Maude's mother was Aurelia Counter who married John Willette. (His name was likely Ouillette or Ouellette.) He, Aurelia, and Maude moved to Sault Ste. Marie where he farmed strawberries and other things. Maude married Joseph Eusebe Aube who was from Moose Creek, Ontario when he moved to The Soo, as it's called. Maude died in 1974, but her youngest of seven children survives as of July, 2002.

Eva married Wilfred Castonguay or Catonguay.

I would love to have more information on these families, their ancestors AND descendants.

Email me at: <livsnana@yahoo.com>
I have very little info. other than my Grandfather, lloyd was french/canadian, lived in Minn. w/ my grandmother, helen. They had 7 children, moved to Calif. in the early 1950's. The name Counter was originally french, (deloicount???). I'm guessing on the exact pronounciation, and spelling. If anyone can help point me in some direction I would love to hear from you. My e-mail address is laurah330@comcast.net. Thank you!!
