Sorry for not keeping up with this in a long, long time! My grandfather was Duke Martin Countess, father was Martin Todd Countess of Memphis & I'm Russell Todd Countess his son. I know very little past my grandfather Duke but would love to find out more. Looking forward to your response. Russ

Hi Ken
I found your post whilst I was trawling for Blacburne information. I notice that you posted in 2009 so second time lucky.I have the probate for Eliza Elinor Countess dated 11th July 1879, she was a spinster and was the youngest surviving daugther of Admiral Countess to give him his correct title.Eliza was a sister to Anne and the birth records are available on IGI. Those records will confirm that George and Ann (Osborn) were the parents. My interest is in that my grandmother Charlotte Countess LeClerc was the daugther of Charles William LeClerc and Francis Blacckburne. Alan Countess Blackburne her father I believe was the son of your mentioned Anthony.
Contact me on family.soya@virgin.net to continue the dialogue as I am sure that we would have common interests

My wife's ggg grandmother was an Anne Countess. She married Anthony Blackburne Jnr. J.P. on 18 Aug 1803 in Syddan Parish Church, Co Meath, Ireland. It appears from the marriage register that her father was a Capt Geo? Countess. At the time he was resident in London. I have not been able to establish if he was the father of Anne. I would be pleased to receive any relevant information you may have.

Ken Ryan

Thanks for the very prompt reply. Do you know when and to whom he was married and the name or names of any of their children?
I recently discovered that Anthony's uncle, Richard Blackburne, married Elizabeth Hopkins, a granddaughter of Rev Ezekiel Hopkins, Bishop of Londonderry at the time when Captain George was engaged in repulsing the French invasion in nearby waters.
I would welcome any data you have about Capt. Countess.
Best wishes,
Ken
Dublin

We have no idea what became of Joseph (Joe) Countess. We believe he came through immigration as either a Greek or Turkish immigrant. We also think his surname was originally spelled "Kontos" or "Kantos" and that it was Anglicized by US Immigration.

He was my Dad's father. My Dad's mother, Esther, was Joseph's second wife.

The three children of Joseph and Esther were Julius, Melvin (Buddy), and Sally.

We know Joseph had another son, Jerome Countess, by his first wife (name unknown).

Can anyone help?

Yes, my maiden name was Countess, my grandfather Williams Henderson Countess was from Alabama, came to Texas in 1910, and died two years later, buried in Maypearl, Texas. I have a brother, John Countess that lives in Louisiana. Some moved east before the Civil War and some afterwards. Some lived in Tennessee, and the east coast.

jboone

Don,

The surname is definitely Countess. Other family variations include Countiss. Peter's family is listed on pages 63-64 of "They Passed This Way" by Mary B.G. Countess which was published in 1969.

Unfortunately, there isn't much on the descendants of Peter L., but there is more detailed info on his parents John and Nancy (Grizzle) Countiss.

Regards,
Michelle

HI, I have a copy of the family book "THEY PASSED THIS WAY". is there a certain thing you are looking for? My children are from the Countess line. The one thing that the book says is a Rachel A. Countiss born about 1845. She was the daughter of Asa and Margaret Martin Countiss. She is on page 143-144 of the book. There is a Duke Blackwell that was mentioned in 1880 TN census for her brother, John Martin, as his stepson aged 20. But not much else was mentioned about this Rachel A. Countiss(Countess). Hope this helps. There are others of us that have this book but I would be glad to help out.
Captain GEORGE COUNTESS, Royal Navy, died 1811

This is a longshot, but does anyone have any basic biographical information, such as place of birth and parentage, of George Countess, who died in 1811. He was probably born about 1750, as he became a lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1774, and later became a captain. He might have been born in the American colonies, as Countess seems to be a name well-established in the United States.
It is an unusual name - does anyone know its origins? Many thanks for any information!

russ, according to what i have peter countiss III (dec. 27, 1772-aug 17, 1826) and martha burtt (dec 03, 1767-mar 21, 1827)
had 12 children among them were john countess (dec 06, 1795-aug 08,1882)my ggg grandfather and asa countess mar 27, 1812- mar 20, 1862.asa married margaret martin and they had john martin countess aug. 11, 1841-1904 who was the father of samuel. john martin was born in mcminnville, tn. and then after the war he moved to decaturville, tn where he became a superintendent of a mining furnace. there is a note re samuel forn about 1868 that they were told todd countess of memphis tn is grandson. you might want to note that the name has two spellings countiss and countess. so you might want to check re tood. i am the transplant in my branch of the family. my grandmother was the only countess who stayed in tuscaloosa when the rest moved to texas. however her grandfather ira jackson countess moved to madison county in the late 1800's. I do not know where you can obtain a copy of book. we have a copy in the public library and i have borrowed my cousin's (i do not have one of my own). i had written one of the children but never rec'd answer. b

And I am also looking for a story about her life. Hopefully, I will find a picture of her when was young.

Also, I was on the internet trying to find information on Thomas Jefferson Countess, of Maypear.
