I just posted about a monument picture I have. SOmeone asked about Couper in Dumfermline. I don't have information on that but I can tell you that Helen Couper's son Alexander was buried at the Dumfermline Cemetery. Perhaps that is where she was originally from too.

It's good to hear from you. I traced my direct line tree back to a Robert Cooper who married in Beath in 1803 if I recall correctly. I have since then gathered quite a lot of info on the Coupers through Menstrie Church and on the net, which I can send you if you wish.
I take it you are descended from William Couper who emigrated to Canada with his wife Annie Kelvington and their children. My grandfather William Couper used to say he was named after his Great Uncle Willie who went to Canada.

The following couple who married in 1906 in MENSTRIE, SCOTLAND.

John Alexander COUPER, (born 1884, Tullibody, son of Aitken Couper and Elizabeth Philp) who married Isabella Ramsay Gall (born 1888, in Alloa, daughter of Alexander Gall and Lilias Lucas)

They had 13 children, amongst them John Alexander and Aitken (born in Coventry), Robert, David, James, Albert, George, William, Charles, Isobel and Elizabeth, (born in Menstrie.)

John Couper born 1/11/1824 Queensferry, Scotland, married on 21/01/1859 Ellen Humble, daughter born Elizabeth 1859 and son born November 1860. John was a Master Mariner and was deceased before his son was born in 1860. Trying to find his death details.

His son John Robert Fornear Couper born 1/11/1860 arrived in Australia 1885 and married Emily Cordell in January 1886. I am trying to find out where he was between 1871 (England Census) and arriving here in 1885.

My grandmother's maiden name was Jannette Couper. Her father's name was Charles Couper. He was the 11th of 11 children. His oldest brother's name was Alexander Couper and their father's name was Alexander Couper. Please let me know if this info seems familiar.

I am trying to find the descendants of Ida Mary Couper who was born in 1892 in Newcastle, NSW. She married Herbert Lane - also born 1892. They married in Adamstown, NSW in 1912 and had the following children:
Muriel Lane 1913 married Arthur Allen in 1942.
Bethany Lane 1914 married John Frederick Astley in 1919.
John Herbert Lane 1916. I think he died young.
Emily Lane 1918 married John Philip Dederer in 1940.

Descendants of Ellen Elizabeth Couper

I am trying to find the descendants of Ellen Elizabeth Couper who was born in Newcastle NSW in1886. She married Thomas Lancelot McGuffie (born 1885 in NSW) at Kurri Kurri NSW in 1911. They had 2 daugthers: Myrtle and Emily. Myrtle was born in Adamstown NSW in 1913 and died about 1999 in Newcastle, NSW. She married Ernest Ivor Fairhall in 1937 in Newtown, NSW. They had 2 daugthers - Ellen Myrtle Fairhall and Wendy Fairhall.

Emily McGuffie was born in 1917 in Adamstown, NSW.

Dear Karen

I have been conferring with one of my husband's Couper relatives about your query and this is what we have come up with:

1. We have no Anthony or George in the Couper family that we know of. 2. We had a professional genealogist in Scotland do some research for us and according to his records, our John Couper had 6 children, not 12. 3. As far as we know, Robert Couper didn't have a fortune. He was a baker and a grocer. 4. We do know that some of the Coupers were in the shipping industry - Master Mariner etc.

We have written away for the marriage certificate of Robert Couper and Elizabeth Kerr to see if that sheds any light on anything which may help both you and us.

If anything else comes up which may link our Couper families, I will let you know.

Hi Bubbles! WOW! Australia, huh? Well, it's hard to know if my Robert and your Robert are the one and the same! I wish you knew who Robert's parents were - that would help distinguish it. The dates do seem to line up, though. The following is a family note on Robert Couper:

"Robert had 12 children; 5 sons and 7 daughters. Two of his sons were sea captains. One drown in the English Channel and one drown in New York Harbor. The other sons were "wild" and caused him to lose most of his fortune."

Any of this sound familiar?? Do you know anything about the sea captain part?? I have several Couper/Kerr marriages in my husband's line and I'll just bet you they are all related to each other. Can't seem to find anything to tie them together. Thanks for your quick response and if this sounds at all correct to you (or anyone else in your family) can you let me know? Thanks so much!

I don't have a date of birth for Robert Couper but his wife Elizabeth Kerr was born in Dalmeny, Scotland in 1781 which means that Robert could have been born around 1776. I have the names of 6 of their children as follows:

Elizabeth born 1814 in Queensferry, Scotland, Jess born 1817 in Dalmeny, Scotland, Marrion born 1820 in Dalmeny, Scotland, John born 1824 in Queensferry, Scotland, Robert born 1812 in Dalmeny, Scotland and Jane born abt 1830 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

I don't know anything about any of the above children and their descendants except John whose son John Robert Fornear Couper went to Australia.

Looking for any information about Ellenor or Eleanor Couper aka Neeltje. I have also seen her name spelled Cooper or Kuyper. I suspect she may originally be a Kuyper because it is likely she was Dutch in origin. She married Aaron or Arie Brouwer/Brower and had children Femmitje 'Phebe', Hilletje, Anney, Maria, Johannis, and Helena, and they were all in New Jersey as far as I know. Thanks!

Daniel Miller Couper was actually christened Donald Cowper, but the name changed over time. I have also found people of this line with the spelling Cauper! I find it best to use C??per in search engines where wildcards are possible.

COUPER, Robert (James?)-scotland to Australia

I am at the very beginning of my family search. I am trying to trace my mother's maternal line. Her maternal grandfather was called Robert James COUPER. We think he was the eldest sibling and was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.Quite possibly around 1860 though I am unsure.The names of some of his siblings were Henrietta, Janette and John.It is likely his father was also called Robert Couper, so I have been told. They migrated to Australia, probably when Robert James was young, because I know he married here in Australia-to Catherine Connell. He died around 1936.
If anyone feels they link into the family at all, I would love to hear from them.

My ggrandmother's sister, Elizabeth Allison married James Hamilton Couper, Lilias's brother. Their daughter, Elizabeth Couper Smillie lives in Glasgow. Many of the Allison descendents are here in the US. I see from the Ancestry file a descendent of Lilias Couper lives 250 miles south of me here in California(Humboldt Co. is where I live). My ancestor Stephen Couper c 1818 worked in Glasgow as a Pianoforte maker, married Mary Kemp in 1839 in Edinburgh. He came to Australia in 1840s. His son Stephen James Couper married Margaret Telfer who was born in Illinois in 1845 when her parents Robert Telfer and Elizabeth Hill were looking for a relative (Telfer). They returned to Scotland and came to Australia in 1854. Robert Telfer's father was thomas Telfer, and his mother Helen Davidson. Seeking information on Stephen Couper's parents. We cannot find where he was born, but think that his fther must have been called Stephen or Stephen James because the naming of his children followed the Scottish pattern. the Telfers and Davidsons were in Roxburgh, but the Coupers seem to be elsewhere, and the families grew to know each other once they came to Australia.

"DEATH OF MR. T. B. COUPER. The enitre community was shocked by the news of the death of Mr. T. B. Couper, which occurred at his home last Saturday night about 11 o'clock. Mr. Couper was suffering from acute indigestion, and had been ill but a few days. In fact, his condition was not considered serious until Saturday.

"Mr. Couper was born on St. Simon's Island, Glenn county, Ga., and came to LaFayette in 1897. Since his residence here, he has been in the employ of Messrs. Weil Bros., cotton buyers, and has been a familiar figure on the streets of LaFayette. He was a man who made friends easily, and always had a kindly greeting for those with whom he came in contract. Mr. Couper was 51 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, and two brothers, Mr. B. K. Couper, of Spartanburg, SC, and Mr. W. P. Couper, of Swan Creek, La.

"The funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. W. T. Hollingsworth and the remains laid to rest in the City Cemetery.

Thanks, it sounds promising, I have only just started and have not had the time to get stuck into it yet. When I have a spare few hours, probably in the new year I will buy some time on Scots Origins and see what I come up with. My Aunt seems to think that our Coupers are from Wemyss/Methil and that is where my Grandad lived but I imagine that some travelling must have gone on. I find it is so hard to tie up definite links. How are you managing?

It could be that your ancestor James Couper was the brother of my ancestor, Daniel Miller Couper. I have a brother James pencilled in (am more confident of the other siblings), and the date of marriage you give for James Couper makes him about the right age.

Daniel Miller Couper was born 1850 in Caithness, Scotland to parents Robert Couper and Isabella Miller.

Other siblings: Barbara, James, Christina, Jessie, Joseph, Isabella, Robert, Christina, Barbara and Robert John.

Does your information match?
