My Grandfather's name was William Reeves Courage ... Son of John R. Courage a Magistrate from Dorset. I know that my Grandfather was an Episcopal Minister who was born and raised in Newfoundland who moved to Syracuse, NY.
Would love more information as I hope to visit NFL this summer.

Hello i wonder has anyone come across the grave of my grandparents in Aberdeen, Arthur Courage and Elizabeth Courage.My grandmother died in 1984. i would like to know what is written on the grave to see if anyone else is buried there as well. This will help with my research i hope.

I have been recently looking into the Courage family myself.
My grandmother (Warford) adopted a baby named Courage in 1944 or 1945. His mother's name was Lily.

Hi USAChicago, Sounds like a dream trip.Hope you and your daughter have a great time. A few things for you. Your Joseph Courage was my gguncle. Joseph's brother William (1823) is my gggrandfather. Their brothers. It's awesome to connect with you. Another thing, My gggrandfather on my mothers side, Israel Gibeau (1840)Quebec, was chief engineer on a lake steamer in Chicago.He moved to St. Boniface,Manitoba in the 1860's and later settled in a Metis community, Lambert township, in Minnesota. Hi, Kelly. We are also descendents of the Courage’s of Harbour Grace; however, we have lost the surname since it was my grandmother Courage who was born in Harbour Grace in 1894. She was the daughter of Hugh William Courage (1883), son of Joseph Courage (1821) and grandson of Robert Courage (1790). My daughter and I are flying to up St. John’s from Chicago at the end of this month. From there we plan to drive up to Harbour Grace. Should be interesting.

Hi Kelly.My name is Glen Courage and I live in Paradise,NL located about one hours drive from Hr. Grace.My grandfather was Mose Albert Courage, born in Hr. Grace in the late 1800. Courages in NL are also related to those in Buchans and Catilina,NL.I will see what I can find out about the Courages from Hr. Grace and let you know.

The Courage name seems to be a rather common name in the U.K..I have found Courages all over France, England, and Scotland. My Courages came from Harbour Grace NewFoundland in the late 1700's or early 1800's. My grandfather Robert Duncan Courage was killed while sleeping in his fishing vessel in the Georgia Strait between Vancouver Island and B.C. in 1930.The Admiral Nulton struck their boat in the early morning, 10 men died while there were only 3 survivors. Robert Duncan sounds Scottish. Robert Duncan was the one who apprehended the killer of James 1st., the first Scottish King of England. He became clan Robertson in Scotland. So, therefore,many Scots named their sons Robert Duncan. Thanks for your info., we are probably blood related.

Well, Bob Bray found this info about John, Anne Courage married William Bray in 1813 and John Courage was the witness in Harbour Grace. While Bob was visiting the area he also stated in an e-mail to me that he believes the Courage name goes back further than 1790 in Harbour Grace. I think what happened was that I made an assumption about Robert and Anne Courage as brother and sister on some forum. That is when Mr. Bray replied to me, confirming the relationship to me. He also stated that John was the witness. Iam guessing that John was their father. I hope this helps a little for now. Yes, you are correct on your info so far. It is exactly what I have.These are my great grandparents

Thank you Joann for the reply. Besides the Courage name. I also have a number of Scottish Grandfathers. John Ballenden, John R. McKay, William Linklater, John Sanderson. These men all married Cree Indian or Half Cree,Half Scottish women. It is nice to here from Scotland. These people are all from my fathers side. My mother was Acadian French and Quebecois French. Her six times great grandfather was Jean Gaudet said to be the Abraham of Acadia. He died in Nova Scotia in 1671. He was born in France in 1575.

My father Roy Kenneth Courage was born in Poole Dorset UK in 1925
His father Cecil Charles
His father Eli
His father William
His father ??Charles all born in Dorset in the south of England

The Courage side of my family came from Cornwall England. Many many generations ,then some immigrated to the US and my side came to Canada(Victoria British Columbia)The farthest I can go back is to a "Pierre Courage"( late 1700s) who was a french prisoner of war in England and he married an English girl. I would think the name is of French origin.Hope this helps.

It sounds like we may be researching the same family. I have a William Courage born in 1823 (I think married to Catherine Kennedy) and his father Robert born in 1790 and died in 1860. I think he was married to Jane Curtis. They were all in Harbour Grace NF. That's as far back as I could get so far. I'm not sure how much new information I have, but I would love to trade info (especially about John b. 1762,I haven't come across him yet).

Hi Hannah, I am William Kelly Courage. My Courage line came out of Harbour Grace. My GGgrandfather was William Courage b. 1823. His children were Duncan b.1851, Giles b.1854,Lavinia b.1856, Louisa could be Louise b. 1859, and George b. 1864.William's father was a John Courage but I believe all my Courage's were fisherman. I hope this can be of some help for you.

My name is Kelly Courage. I live in Montana,USA.I've traced my Courage tree to Newfoundland.John b.1762 > Robert b. about 1790 d.July 26th,1860, Harbour Grace N.F. > William b. Oct. 16th 1823. What I'm curious about is where all these Courage's came from. My family were fishermen. Many died at sea. Were they from Scotland? Were they French Huguenots? English? I called a Courage in Canada and he said they were from the Jersey Isles. I found nothing there so far. If you can help or just want to say hello, all are welcome.

I hope you see this as its been a while since you posted this. I am MOST interested in the Courage line in NFL. I have a John Ridout Courage emigrating to NFL from Dorset, England. He was a magistrate. He married Susie Brewer from Burin. He had a William Courage. I am looking into the fact that he was also married at one time to an Elizabeth Reeves and had a Hannah Elizabeth Courage in 1891. The Courage line married into the Rowland line in Dorset. Louisa Rowland Courage was John's mother. Robert Rowland Courage was John's brother.

Ronald Ernest died in about 1980, and his second wife Doreen Florence nee Sallis died in September 2000. I can't at the moment find out what happened to Peggy or where any offspring are, but I shall try to find out.

My grtgrt grandmother married Richard Rowe who was born in 1817died 1907.They had 2 children Harriet(my grt grandmother) and Richard jr. Richard sr also was married to Louisa his first wife giving bith to Louise who later married Charles Reynolds they had several children in which one Emmeline (Lena)
would marry Sidney Courage.

My paternal grandmother was Hannah Elizabeth Courage. Her Father was John R. Courage. She married Henry Morgan Grandy of Garnish, Newfoundland.Rol (probably Roland) Courage was my dad's uncle.Louise Courage his aunt maybe. There is also a George Courage and the Right Honorable J R Courage is also a relative. Would greatly appreciate any information that can be found.
