Here is my email carrie23me@hotmail.com. ;)
I hope we both can find Basil's family.

Hi, I'm searching for my Courville background. My grandmother was a Courville, and her father Joseph Courville married Marguerite St. Jules. I know his father was also a Joseph Courville and he married Marguerite Denis. From there I am missing at least 5 generations. I would love to find out what you have.
Thank you
Nicole Dubois

I just looked at the Polk County Texas Marriage Book B again. In the "C's" there is a:
Curvell, Batiste to Sarah Hudson On May 1,1853 Page-43
I think this is an accurate record!!! Since there were two fellows and wives with similar names, it has really confused things. I still am not any closer to finding Batiste's parents, etc. but will try to just stick with this spelling and see what happens.
Thanks for ALLL your help.!

Eight rows up from them is:
Colvele, B. to Sarah Hardin On June 2, 1850 Page 15. This couple may have been confusing some of the folks out there.

I've found where I got the name Jean Baptiste Courville. The history column in the Polk County Enterprise on 25 Mar 2004 had a story about the family of William Givens Hudson and Mary Mimone Allen. There it says that their daughter Sarah Ann Hudson married Jean Baptiste Courville who owned 320 acres in the Robert Whitlock Survey east of Leggett in partnership with William Givens Hudson. It also says that both of Sarah's husbands were buried in the Oates Cemetery east of Leggett.

Have you checked Rev. Donald Hebert's "Southwest Louisiana Records" to see if there are any records of a second Jean Baptiste Courville?
When I started working on the family, I thought Jean's, (Possibly called John by others since Jean is French for John),name was Jean B. Courville. On my grandfathers records, it is spelled Courville.
I'm glad to know that Mary Pauline's record lists him John Batise Courville. I know they lived in Polk County and the only record I've pulled up is his military record.
It IS possible he was a bigamist with another wife and family in Louisiana. He was born in Louisiana. There was a Jean Baptiste in Louisiana with matching years of birth and death. If he was the same man, and I hate to think he was, he made it home for census. There are records for this man in Louisiana. It's been hard to find records for our Jean which might lend credability to someone with a double life.
On my grandfather's, (Wade Hudson Morrison), death certificate, his mother's maiden name is listed as Courville.
On the Texas Death record of one of Lou's children, his mother's maiden name is given as Covelle.
Another bible record shows the spelling Culveille.
It's a mystery at least now. I keep hoping that one of the descendants will come up with something concrete. Otherwise, JBC is a mystery. I would love to hire someone who actually knew how to find out if I had the $$$.
When my father was alive, the grandchildren all went together and bought a marker for Lou, (Louisa) because there never had been one. I'm not sure which grandchild ordered it but spelled her name Lou Colville Morrison. He had wanted it changed but it didn't ever get done and I guess won't.
Just in our family records, I've seen so many variations of the spelling
Oates family, but the only source I listed was the 1860 census which has Jno. Baptiste Colveil, Calveil or Calwell (depending on who did the index). More recently, I was researching Jack Wilkinson/Wilkerson who married Adaline Courville. At that time I found the death certificate of Mary Pauline Rice which has her father as John Batise Courville.

There is a marriage in the Polk County Marriage Book B for B. Colvele and Sarah J. Hardin dated 2 Jun 1850. On the 1850 census in Polk County, Bates and Sarah Caldwell are listed next to widow Martha Harden (66). Could Bates Caldwell be Baptiste Courville?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. I guess this would mean that your father Charles and my mother are 1st cousins.

Pam (Bailey) Keith

It's been a long time since I put a message here. I got side-tracked on other lines in my family.
I'm back on Courville.
I still haven't found any will or land records on my Jean Baptiste Courville married to Sarah Hudson. I did find a military record though.
There is a J. B. Courvill that served with COMPANY F, Twenty-Second Texas Infantry, C.S.A. It was organized March 10, 1862 in Polk CO, TX by Rev. J. A. Scruggs. The unit became part of Walker's Texas Division. John R. Oats is a second lietenant. John R. Oats will marry Sarah Hudson after JB's death. They must have been friends, I'm thinking. Anyway, Company F fought at Young's Point, LA June 7 1863, Against the advance of the Federal Army under Gen Bnaks from Franklin, LA (March 14-26, 1864); Natchitoches, LA (March 31, 1864, Wilson's Farm, LA, (April 7, 1964)Savine Cross Roads Mansfield, LA (April 8 1864), Pleasant Hill, LA (April 9, 1864)doperations against Gen. Steele from Little Rock to Camden, ARK including engagements at Mark's Mills, ARK (April 15, 1864 and Jenkins Ferry, ARK, (April 30, 1864). So, I guess my question is:
Did your J. B. Courville serve the Confederacy? If he did, this might be another matching point or perhaps verify that he was a different JBC than mine.
Hi Jessie,

You might try Google searches for the name in Louisiana. I think the vast majority of Courvilles in the US reside there. I can briefly relay the lineage as: France (Courville, which is a small village near Versailles), then Quebec, Illinois, then St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. Hope this helps.

Sebastian

I have a brick wall in our Turcotte ancestry that I'm hoping you can help me with! In your posting, it says that COURVILLE was originally an aka name for several surnames including LEFEBVRE and GERVAIS. Could it also have been used in place of the name LOURNELE?
I have Louis TURCOTTE (1841-1924) married to Odelia PATENAUDE (1844-1911).
Here is my problem: I also have their daughter Mary Genevieve (1866 in NY-?) married to Lucene LOURNELE (no info on him). The Louis Turcotte family move to St Albans, Franklin, VT by 1878, with many of them staying in that area. I have not been able to find Mary Genevieve and husband in the census records after their marriage in 1887. However, I do find a Lucien and Mary CORVILLE/COURVILLE in the years 1900, 1910, & 1920 with their children in St Albans. The age and birthplace for Mary is the same as my records show for Mary Genevieve TURCOTTE. I appreciate your input on this!
Interestingly, I have their son John Thomas married to Ida GERVAIS. I also a LEFEBVRE in a side branch.
Thank you!

Hi, I am looking for some of my grandmother's family. She was a Courville, and she married Arthur Dubois in 1910. Her father was Joseph Courville. He married Marguerite St. Jule in 1888. He was the son of Joseph Courville and Marguerite Denis. I don't have a marriage date for them. I know the line is from Jean-Baptiste Courville dit De Billy and Marguerite Jean dit Vien, but the spaces in between I haven't been able to fill. If you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. In return if I can help you that would be great also. I know my grandmother's sister, Armonoza, married a man whose last name was Tisdale, and had three sons by him. As far as I know she lived her adult life in the U.S.. I think she remarried after he died. I know she was alive in 1973, when my grandmother died. She was at the funeral. I had never seen her before. I nearly fainted at the sight. She resembled my grandmother like a twin would. Please write me at my e-mail address: nicoleyd@telus.net
Thank you
Nicole Dubois

Am searching for info on the family of Curry "CJ" Courville: born July 4, 1925 (probably in Louisiana), died June 23, 2005 at Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was married to Mary Soileau, (probably in Louisiana). He had the following children: Judy, Jerry, Jane, Kenneth, Daniel, and Gerald (all probably born in Louisiana). Curry's father believed to be Toby Courville, no other info known on him. Any info on the ancestry of Curry Courville would be very appreciated. Thanks

Re: Courville Families

Historical records of Jean Baptiste Courville son of Pierre and Mary Eugenie West that I have found in my research show the following: He was born in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish Louisiana (according to Church records) as indicated by June 30 1825. He can be accounted for by number markings in the 1830 and 1840 census, 1850 Census and 1860 Census of Louisiana in St. Landry Parish. His marriage to Louise Taylor on 07-06-1850 is recorded both in civil and church records. She did not die until 1907. His succession (called so in Louisiana but outside of that state known as a will) only lists one wife and heirs as follows: Alzime Louise Courville born July 21 1851, Hypolite Courville born March 1852, Adrien J. Courville born April 3, 1856, Adrienne Courville born 10-17-1858 and Martin Courville born 29 July 1861.

I have seen in a family tree on the internet that he was married to a Sarah Hudson from TN in Texas May 1, 1853. That the issue of that marriage were Mary Pauline born in 1858, Louisa born in 1859, Ida Clementine born 1861, Adeline born 1864 and John Edward 1868.

If this is the information that you have for him this would mean that he had two wives at the same time and fathered children in both marriages during the same time period. It would also mean that he managed to be 'home' in Louisiana during census time and to father his children with Louise Taylor. Although not out of the realm of possibility and I'm not doubting your resources this is a tremendous find! He was a bigamist and led a double life!
Some of the documented records of Jean Baptiste Courville are as follows:
Birth Recorded - Opelousas Church v. 2 p. 320

Baptism: July 27, 1825, Sponsors: Michel Prudhomme and Sidonie Darbonne, Father Flavius Henri Rossi, St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, Louisiana
Southwest Louisiana Records: Page 97 vol 1869-1870

1860 Census of St. Landry Parish shows his occupation as Farmer. Value of his Real Estate was $750 and his personal property was $650.

In the 1850 Census Jean Baptiste Fruge is listed as a Planter and on that same page is Jean Baptiste Courville a neighbor and also a Planter.

Genealogy is full of surprises but to know a practicing Catholic was a bigamist in another state is a shock nonetheless. I have found a note on the internet which indicated he died in Richland, LA. There are four towns with that name in St. Mary, Rapides, Iberville and Tensas Parishes. There is a Richland Parish which county seat is Rayville in northeastern Louisiana. So I'm not sure exactly where this refers to in Louisiana.

Again I am surprised to know he was a bigamist! What was his occupation? Did he also own land in Texas? Is there any mention in your records of another will (if you are going to lead a double life guess you'd have two! (I'm hoping!)) Don't you wonder what he told each wife as he headed off leaving her for the other. Scandal in small Louisiana and Texas towns! Since he was Catholic, was their a church record of his marriage to Sarah Hudson? Or was it just a civil record? I'm very intrigued. Looking forward to your additional information!

Thanks you so much for your reply!
I know my Jean B. Courville was born in Louisiana but don't know where. I had thought perhaps he had been married previously in Louisiana before he came to Texas.
He married Sarah Hudson in Texas and then they lived and raised a family in Polk County, Texas. My great grandmother was one of their children - Louisa, (Lou), Courville who married LeRoy Morrison. I have the family bible of Louisa and LeRoy but it doesn't help me with her father's family history.
I have found an alternate spelling of her name occassionally in different records. I think that is because of the soft pronunciation of the "r" in Courville. The other spelling referred to is Colville. Her son, Wade Hudson Morrison spelled it Courville. When purchasing her grave marker, one of her grandaughters had her name spelled "Louise Colville" on it. I have never seen any evidence of her ever being called Louise but rather "Lou" -alot.
Back then it seemed like everyone was named after relatives so I'm sure there is a connection between your J.B. and mine.
Thank you again - every little bit helps!

Jean Baptiste Courville (son of Pierre Courville and Marie Eugenie West) was born 30 June 1825 on the Opelousas Prarie in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. He married Louise Taylor who was born in 1827. Their marriage is recorded Southwest Louisiana Records as being 6 July 1850 in Opelousas, Louisiana. Jean B. Courville died on 22 Sept 1869 in St. Landry Parish. There are some records of family trees on ancestry.com that indicate a Sarah Ann Hudson married to Jean B. Courville. The dates do not match up for Sarah to be Jean's wife. Maybe this would help.
