Burdett Coutts

My grandmother was Rosetta Burdett Coutts 1875-1971 Lived in Bethnal Green. On the 1891 census she is the only one with the 'Burdett' component in her name. There was talk of an illegitimate child somewhere. I am trying to see if there is any connection between Angela Burdett Coutts, as there are not many Burdett Coutts around. I cannot find a birth registar for her, but she is on the census as daughter of Charles and Catherine Coutts. Can anyone shed some light for me please?

Hello Theresa, Thanks so much for your reply! I think I remember one of your visits. I couldn't remember who it was that you had stayed with but I remember a party at Uncle Chuck & Aunt Ella's (does that sound right?). I was about 12 or so. Its been awhile since I've seen Aunt Norah. Though, I do expect to see some of my moms cousins later this week. Please feel free to e-mail me. I'd love to hear about how you've been and anything you have on the family. My e-mail is jfer0142@yahoo.com. Thanks again!
Jennifer I just came across your post and I might be able to help you a liitle bit. I came out to Detroit in 1986 & 1987 to visit my mums cousin Norah Valchine. My grandfather & Elizabeth who passed away in 1980 are siblings. From memory Elizabeth married Hector lavery I think in 1906. They had a daughter Elizabeth as you say about 1909 and also a son Adam lavery who died as a child. They went to the states/canada about 1923/4 and came back to Scotland before 1932 as Hector died about then in Scotland. I'll dig out my notes & see if I can add any more info. Also your g-pa's sister Norah might know something too if your in touch. Hope this helps. Theresa :-)

I'm not sure that I can help, although I have some tantalisingly similar details in my wife's family tree. This may help to ensure that you do not confuse your John with ours. I suspect they were cousins.

Our John Coutts was baptised on 09.04.1808 in Glenmuick. He married Margaret Johnston(e) - Copy of old parish records 25/10/1835 (OPR Marriages 187/0020 0174 Daviot Aberdeen. He died 25.05.1884.

You mention that John's parents were JC and Margaret Cruickshanks. The Coutts and Cruickshanks were probably neighbours because our John and Margaret had a number of children of whom one, James, married Jane Cruickshank.

I suspect that you and my are related through both the Coutts and Cruickshanks!

Have you tried Scotlandspeople? Although you have to pay for images of the OPRs, you can search for free and get possible matches.

David

I have a connection to James Coutts who married Elisabeth Couts on 3 Feb 1797 in Glenmuick Aberdeen, Scotland. James Coutts was born about 1770 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Elisabeth Couts was born about 1758 in Craithie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Their children were Thomas, John, James, Janet, Donald, Anne. The Coutts family had a farm on the River Dee, next to or near Balmoral Castle. The children emigrated to Australia from about 1817. Can anybody connect to a James Coutts and Elisabeth Coutts?

Hi again Angela

I tried White Pages for your parents and Keith Coutts but didn't find either. I then remembered that you can access my email address on glen.nochty.com which you said you have already looked at. In the lists of Kellas ancestors, my name is against Harry Coutts and you can click on it to get my email. You might also like to look at the family tree I put together a few years ago on a free web page at:
http://jeanettedall.tribalpages.com/

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Jeanette

Hi Angela
I helped to put together our part of the Kellas line on the Glen Nochty site, there was another woman in the US who did their related line. And David Walker who runs the site did the rest, he found some interesting information to add to it.

I also am not sure about entering email addresses here, but I will find you easily enough through family contacts (might not get around to it till the weekend though). Last time I saw your mother in 2006, I gave her (and my other cousins) 3 or 4 photos of places in Scotland associated with our family. Keith invited them all over when I was down there.

Elaine is around my age, it was she and Yvonne that I played with as children when we visited Uncle Bill and Aunty Edna, the others were older.

Hi Jeanette, Glad to hear back from you so soon. My Mum is Elaine, 7th born child of William and Edna Coutts. Her married name is Smith, mine is not as i am married now. That would make you her 1st cousin and i your 2nd cousin, is that right? So sorry to hear you didn't find any relatives in Scotland, i must say i am surprised you didn't though, i followed a link on one of your posts to a website called, glen-nochty. I was amazed how far back it went and how many relatives i knew nothing of. With so many you would think there would be still some remaining. But i guess i thought wrong. I think it's really great you went to Scotland and saw so much of our heritage, i have wanted to do the same for a while now. Maybe one day. I would love to see any info you have gathered, i find it very interesting. Hope to hear from you again, i haven't used this site before and i'm not sure if it is safe to post my email address on here, perhaps you would know better than me.

Sincerly
Angela

Hi Angela

How lovely to hear from you. Which of my cousins is your mother? I didn't find any Kellas relatives in Scotland unfortunately, but I did find a relative on Granny Coutts' side, Bill Scott, who worked out that he was my fourth cousin once removed. I met him in Scotland just before he left for a previously planned trip to Australia, and he stayed with my sister when he was in Australia. He had researched way back to the 1600s. I have done a lot since and I would be happy to share the information I have with you. While in Scotland, we visited the village where Pop Coutts was born and saw the gravestone of his Coutts grandparents and also of his Kellas great-great-parents.

Regards
Jeanette

My grandmother told me that her uncle, Peter Coutts, worked at Balmoral as a shepherd. There may be a connection with Balmoral here. It is hard to follow any line from James Coutts as there are many with that name. I am looking for someone with the knowledge that James Coutts was the father of the illigitimate Ann.

In the information I have Alexander Coutts and Charles Coutts are half brothers. Alexanders parents were James Coutts and Isobel Robertson. Isobel Robertson also had a daughter, Elizabeth and her father was James Farquharson. Alexander was living with Isobels' parents, Thomas and Helen Robertson, in the 1861 and 1871 census. Elizabeth was also there in the 1861 census. What other information do I need to prove these facts. The only record I do not have is of Alexanders birth to James Couts of Tarland and Isobel Robertson but I have that information from a very reliable source. Barb Smith
I has a lot of information on people in Muskegan, Mich. also. Alexanders' half sister, my Ggrandmother, was there. She was married to James Dawson and had two children, Francis and Mary Jane. James died and Elizabeth married Norman McCrimmon and they had 4 boys. Barb Smith

That is my Charles Smith Coutts, almost certainly. If you Google "Avon Coutts" the first thing that comes up is the Google News scan of the engagement announcement for his daughter.

According to my grandfather (Charles' nephew), he named his daughters Avon and Wanaka.... Wanaka after a New Zealand lake he thought was incredibly beautiful. This suggests that Charles went to New Zealand at some point before settling in Tacoma/Spokane, but who knows?

Avon married Harold Wall/Waugh and Wanaka married Russell Peters.

Morgan
