Hi Virginia,

I thought I responded to this last night. I will try again. Are you still out there?
My G. Uncle H. J. Coventry was born approx 1866, said to be a son of Lord Coventry of England. I heard the same story. My Dad's cousin Frank Louis Coventry (Warner the name he was raised under) also was asked to re accept the title and refused. Could we be talking about the same man?

Jan

This is a long shot:
I found my possible ancestor Ramona Ira DAVIDSON in an old Ancestry family Tree, last updated 2001.
I noted her marriage to Archibald HOLDEN and that there were two living Holden daughters, one married to a living COVENTRY and the other not stated.

If any children or grandchildren of Ramona HOLDEN nee: DAVIDSON read this, please make contact, as I have lots of info about Ramona's parents and grand parents, some of which goes back to 1773.
I am descended from a DAVIDSON family in Ceylon, and I believe the link was Ramona's Gt Grandfather.

I said it was a longshot, but worth a try.
Regards
Julian Lovegrove, Kent, UK

I think that the school finally closed in about 1870 and the site is the site of the District Council Building in Epping. I have a complete record of the boys in the school until 1845 and there may be some more information in the library in Quaker House. During that time Benjamin Townson was a pupil and he became the first head of the Quaker School in Reading.
I do not have any knowledge of Walter Horner Brown but I wonder if there is any connection with Isaac Brown, originally a pupil at the school in Epping, he had his own school in Hitchin and then started the teacher training college for Quaker schools. His picture appears in a book called Hitchin worthies.

Best regards

Geoffrey Boys

Thanks for the reply Steve. Stan is the eldest son of Jim, he has a sister phyllis and he had a brother Les who passed away about 15 years ago. He's 85 and going strong, hopefully he takes after WIC in the longevity dept!
I have'nt gone into the Coventry family history in detail yet, I've mainly been doing my own family tree and picking up bits along the way. Lots of my ancestors have marriage and baptism records at St Matthews Bethnal Green and St Leonards shoreditch too, so have tended to search at the same time. My husband Ian has little or no interest in family history buts its interesting for our kids to know their roots. Stan has also told me lots of memories of his grandparents and aunts and uncles.
Regarding your GGGGmother, was it Sarah Elizabeth Roberts? I had this name written down on some notes I had made sometime but now cannot remember where I got it from. I really should try to be a bit more organised in my research!

I will mention you and your mum Joyce to Stan when I see him tomorrow.
Regards, Linda

Very happy to respond Linda as I don't expect any luck with the original query from 2000 I'm sad to say. I've traced DavidC back to Illinois but have drawn a blank there.

My grandparents were Frank (WIC's youngest son) and Hilda. They lived in Kennington and moved out to Morden.

GGps were WIC and Alice (Watts).

GGGps were George Isaac and Martha (Smith) his second wife.

GGGGps were George and Sarah.

GGGGGps were William and Ann.

Later points are to be confirmed but I'm reasonably convinced of them.

I'm sorry but I don't think I've heard of Stanley. Who was his father? William or Jim? He must be one of my Mother's (Joyce) many cousins so I could ask her.

Hope this may be of interest and will look forward to hearing more. All the best.

Steve

COVENTRY/MEEK in PA, OH &IL

I'm continuing to look for your help in determining the origins of our COVENTRY/MEEK ancestors before they came to IL in the early 1800s and settled in Fayette and Richland counties. I emphasize BEFORE they came to IL because we have a pretty good grasp of things AFTER they got here in IL. My g,g,grandmother was Mary Coventry and she had at least one brother named William. We believe their father's name was Jacob but are not sure. Mary Coventry married my g,g, grandfather John Meek. One of their children (also named John) is buried in Vandalia, Fayette County, IL -- on his gravestone is engraved "Born in Ohio." We believe that the COVENTRY/MEEK families of John and Mary were living in southwestern PA or just across the border in eastern OH. THIS IS WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

We assume that in order for our g,g grandparents to meet, develop a relationship, get married and have children, the families must have been living in reasonably close proximity -- perhaps as neighboring farmers. We do have information that indicates Mary was born in PA, and we think it may have been in Washington County in the southwestern corner of the state.

If any of you can make any connection, or have any information about these specific names and places, PLEASE respond to this posting -- or to the e-mail address I have given. THANK YOU!

Think grandfather William would have been born around 1880 as my father Charles was his last child born in 1911. There were three sisters, Mary, Margaret (Meg), Isa and Janet (Jenny). Isa married a man called George McKay (at least I think it was McKay. They had a daughter Janeane, who married Ken Gribble and now live in Sharon, Ontario and I think she might know more. I haven't been in touch with her for a few years but could try again if you think it might shed some light on your family. Please email me if you want any other info-I might just know something that would ring a bell. I do know that William was a farmer and that his wife was Janet Porteus Stark.
Hope this a little more helpful than my last communication, but you did prompt me to dig out some old paperwork that ws lying around.
Best wishes
Jinty

Unfortunately, I have no way of finding out either as all the aged aunts who would know are now pushing up daisies!

The first known Coventry's on my side were a Robert (b. late 1600's)who came from England and was a British Calvary Officer. They settled in Scotland, at Fairhill, near Hamilton. At the time of the Second Jacobite Rebellion, they fled to Northern Ireland (County Antrim). Around 1760, two of Robert's sons (George and William) came to New York State in America. This is from the files at the Columbia County, New York Historic Society. Also, there is a Coventry Journal Published in USA. It is called DR ALEXANDER COVENTRY MEMOIRS OF AN EMMIGRANT 1785-1830. It is about 3000 pages. There are also about 100 pages of letters and legal documents in the Historic Society Library. All can document this story.

Millis and Mary Coventry were staying with my gggrandmother Sarah Payne in Epping in 1851. Millis Coventry attended Isaac Payne's School (Quaker) in Epping c 1811. When Isaac died in 1845 , the school was taken over by Dr Usmar and Mr Hunter. In 1851, Arthur and Millis Jr were aged 15 and 12 in this school, which was next door to my gggrandmother's house..

In the 1861 census Millis Coventry was a corn factor in Brighton, where my ggrandfather James Hodson had a windmill. Isaac's brother Richard Payne was also a corn factor and was a partner in Rickman and Payne and I am wondering whether Millis Coventry may have taken over the business!

Geoffrey Boys

Hello Coventry researchers.
Henry Coventry, England/USA , Ohio, son of Edward and Maria, married Mary Elizabeth McGinn, Lansdowne , Orillia, both Ontario, d/o John McGinn and Sarah Jane Cooke, June 15, 1886, at Orillia.

They immediately left Orillia for Ohio where Henry possibly had a brother George.
This could be Henry's second marriage. (Clementine?)
The 1901 census finds Mary E in Toronto Ontario living with her recently widowed father John. Henry is boarding near by.
In 1905, John McGinn died at their home at 85 McKenzie Cres.( no longer exists) .
By 1906, the Coventrys can be found in Seattle where they remained until their deaths, Henry in 1919 and Mary E in 1949.
They had 2 daughters
Vera Jessie who died at about 8 years, buried in Toronto
Yvonne , 1898 - 1996 married Merritt Hurd of Seattle
Their child was James ( Jimmy)
who married Nelda ________?
Jimmy and Nelda had 2 boys, Lee and Lonnie and a girl Lynn .
That is as far as my records go!
I am looking for Hurd cousins and for fellow researchers of this branch of Coventrys.
Rob McGinn, Thunder Bay, Ontario

A couple of additions to my Coventry information:

I note George, Mary, William H (age 3) Coventry in the 1870 USA Census in Ohio.
In the same census Henry and Clementine are also in Ohio but a diferent location.
Also in an Ancestry.com database,
"Ohio Marriages 1803-1900"
George Coventry married Mary Metz Sept 21 1865 in Coshocton Ohio . This would fit with our George with son William H Coventry born about 1867. But this is not proven to be our George on paper.
Given the relative uncommon name Coventry, one could assume that this is George brother of Henry.....

In 1880 Census, Ohio, George and Mary plus little William H are again listed but this time George's brother Henry is also living in the household with George as Head.

It seems likely that Clementine has gone either through marriage failure or death, likely the latter.

Also the 1870 census has George Coventry, a bit younger than Henry, as born in CANADA, but Henry who is about 1-2 years older was born ENGLAND.

So between 1844 and 1846, Edward and Maria Coventry came to Canada/ North America from England.
I did not find Edward and Maria in Ohio.

At the LDS Family Search IGI etc I found a marriage of
Edward Coventry to Maria Asnick November 19th 1918, Sherbourne Saint John, Hampshire England .
I do not know for sure if this is our Coventry family.
Rob McGinn
Dear John
I have looked at your Tree on Ancestry.
Look at the 1891 Census for Liverpool, S. Toxteth. The place of Birth for Mary ANDREWS 75, Patrick 47, & Edward 50, is Ireland, Castlebare, not Castle Cary as on the index. As you know from the 1861 Census they were born in Mayo, I think this Castlebar.
My William Andrews married and had childres in Casltebar, Mayo, he was a tradesman, too - a Bracemaker, listed in the 1849 Directory in Chapman St. Manchester, you can see his family on the 1861 census, [wife Sarah], born abt 1800, Devon. As there are very few 'town' Andrews in Mayo, I think John is his brother or cousin.
I would like to share details.
Beryl Martin
beryljmartin@hotmail com
Sydney, Australia

Hi,

I have a problem that confuses me.

I lived with my mother and grandmother, Ethel Andrews, until i got married. My grandmother's mother was Adeline Tulip, born 20 june 1847, in New York, and died in Kansas, 3 feb 1941. Her father was joseph Tulip. I don't know when he died. Actually, he was born Francois Latulippe in 1818 in Quebec, Canada. All of his children used the name, Tulip.
Her mother was Rosalie La Bombard.

When Adeline married my grandmother's father, Ira Adelbert Andrews, she said her name was Addie Coventry, and her mother and father were William and Maud (or Marie?) Coventry, (her signature was hard to read).I don't know of any adoptions or previous marriages for Adeline.

I have several pictures of Frank Coventry, taken in Chicago.
I have a lot of pictures of Adeline, and her brother, Frank Tulip.

I don't know how Frank Coventry fits in, or why i have any pictures of him. I don't know who his parents are. Can anyone identify him, or know who his parents are, or what his relationship to Adeline is?

Thanks for any help you can give to me.

Gloria Strang Pruyne

P.S. The previous post mistakenly labeled the Frank Coventry picture as Frank Covington.

Re: Trying to find out about the CoventryFamily

As said before, we can't get across the pond! Have been told our heritage is of Scotland--census data bears that out. Documents on hand show different spellings ie: Coventry/Covintree (supposedly correct)/Coventree (how Grandmom said all legal papers should be signed) Charles W. b.1811-10-09; d. 1857-07-01; lived in Newark, NJ. Had liverey stable & the Steamboat Hotel. m. Mary E. Creely of Burlington, NJ, 1845-09-01. Visited Mt. Pleasant Cemetary, Newark: other family members: Pamela b. 1849; d.1852--Elizabeth b.1850; d. 1851--James b. ? ; d.1851. Charles & James headstones are about 3' high, there are no markers for the children. They had 4 other children: George C., Fred, Charles William (my G-Grandfather) & Emma.
Variances in documents: Charles W.'s b. as being in Nova Scotia & Scotland. Also, on Charles Wm.'s death cert., his fathers name is listed George Henry. Perhaps, George Henry was Charles W.'s father in Scotland or the was the 1st to come to USA

Mike, Thanks for your reply. I think I'll have to purchase a few "death cert" to get any more info. I'll let you know what I come up with.
