Hi Jack, Ran across your post for 20 Nov 2008- if I am reading it correctly you now believe the maiden name for Nance Crewse Cowden was Nancy Knox? Now that winter is near I will be working on the family genealogy again, have some updates to send you.
my mother, Florine Evans Ganotes (born 1906, died 1997), was a cousin of Ruth Mason Lynholm. Florine's mother was Anna Delle Cowden Evans, the oldest child of Henry and Clarissa Cowden. Ruth's mother was my mother's Aunt Minnie. There was also Aunt Maggie. Cousin Mary Margaret (Shields?). Uncle Bob and Uncle L. D. (Leonard David?).

Delle married James Evans and had 3 children: Claude Evans, Florine (my mother), and Geneva Evans Vanscoy.

I knew cousin Ruth well when I was a child and also her husband Harry. I met her daughter Lynda. This was in California.

My mother married Theodore Ganotes from Greece in 1932 and they had 3 children: James Ganotes (1933), Helen Ganotes Lytle (1934-1993), and me (1947). James is living in California and is 75. Helen died in 1993 and had 6 children. I married George Brent in 1976 and have one daughter. My beloved and dearest husband died May 14, 2009, 5 and one half months ago.

My mother told me many stories about the Cowden side. She surely loved her family on both sides, the Cowdens and the Evans (about whom I can find nothing).

Maria Ganotes Brent

My great-grandmother was Maude Cowden born in Perry, Iowa abt. 1871. I have gone back on census records and found her parents Anna (Emma in a later census) b. abt. 1852 and Frank Cowden b. abt. 1847. Frank was listed as a RR Engineer, and from Pennsylvania. There was also a William Cowden of Indiana that is listed as well, but no clear relation is found. I am looking for any further connection to this line. Thanks.

John Granville Cowden is the son of Alexander Strothers Cowden and Margaret Jane Morrow. He was born 9 Feb 1837 in Xenia, Green, Ohio. He had three children, Ralph, Norman, William and Robert. His wife was Celia W. Chipman. I have more information plus questions if you are interested.
Ephraim Cowden, born Nov 18, 1824, was the son of Jeremiah Cowden and Sylvia Allen. He married Mary Ann Hapgood in 1851. They had 8 children, Emogene, Louise Mary, Earnest Joel, Morris Wells, Grant, Charles George, who is my grandfather, Deforest, and Mark Finley. He died Jan 30, 1888. Charles George, DeForest, Ephraim and Mary Ann are buried in the Fluvanna Cemetary, NY. When researching all of this I consistently came across the "other" Ephraim. I have binders full of information I have gleaned from the internet sources and I also know that the Fenton Historical Library in Jamestown, NY has information available and I have gotten some information from there, but I am many miles away from NY and had to pay for the info I got regarding Cowdens. If anyone is closer to this source of information and can go and share what they find it would be helpful as numerous people are in search of more info on this family. Thank you and keep in touch.

There were 2 Ephraim Cowdens born at about the same time. The one from Iowa that married Cornilia Dickson is not the same Ephraim that married Mary Ann Hapgood. I believe that they are connected somewhere prior to that generation but it is very confusing due to the same names and trades.

Re: NY Cowdens Native American Connection?

Hi Marti - Your message to Dee really caught my eye. My maiden name is Cowdin and my great great grandfather came from New York (family lore has him born in Buffalo, but no confirmation). My Cowdin line too has an oral history of Native American heritage with no proof whatsoever -- other than looks and coloring of some of my relatives. I have my gg grandfather's Civil War records and he is listed as having black hair, dark skin and brown eyes (but is listed as "white").

His name was Ephraim Cowdin (sometimes spelled Cowden) and he is my brick wall. I am wondering if somehow there is some link to your line. I am now willing to consider anything. Of interest, my cousin at one time was sure that our ancestor was related to Loami Cowden -- but it wasn't to be. Now again, I'm wondering if somehow there is some connection.
Concerning the Native American bloodlines...A friend of mine who is an enrolled Native American told me he tried to prove his heritage by genealogy for 20 years and couldn't. He finally just got all of the birth and death certificates (ORDERED FROM THE STATES NOT THE COUNTIES), marriage certs, and the application and mailed them in. He notice before he mailed them that the birth/death certs had a handwritten number on them in different areas on the certs before he mailed them. When he got the answer back from the Nation, his CDIB card was enclosed, and when he got to checking the CDIB numbers for each ancestor, they were the handwritten numbers from the certs!!!! The States don't know what these numbers are, so they can't tell you about them. Check your certificates!!!!!

David,
Walker Cowden and Amy Kerr, parents of Elizabeth Jane Cowden Scaggs, were from the Sevier and Bradley Cos., TN area before they moved to Greene Co., MO., where reportedly Walker died in 1843, and Amy remarried to John Steele.
Walker was the brother of Lynn Cowden of Sevier Co., TN., and POSSIBLY the son of Thomas and Cattern Cowden (both born bef 1774) of Spartanburg/Greenville Cos., SC and Williamson Co., TN. Much more research is needed on this family to prove anything...There is family tradition that there is Native American blood in the family - in my own line from Lynn Cowden's second wife, Mary Catherine Thomas, who was supposedly a half-blood Cherokee, daughter or granddaughter of Isaac Thomas and a Cherokee woman...There may be other instances, as the Cowdens were in TN early 1800s, and settled. I have a website called Cowden Connections, where I have Lynn and Walker Cowden, as well as others I think are their siblings, and files on Matthew Cowden, Robert Cowden I and Hannah, his wife, and several other Cowden lines, as well as my Lawson family.
If you are interested in joining the site (right now it's free - hopefully forever) please email me and I will invite you to join. If you descend from Walker, then we are cousins...

Help with Addie Cowden Tennessee / Arkansas

I am having no luck finding any information on the parents or other family of Addie Cowden that was born 08 Jan 1878 in Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennesse. She married Jarman Laughinghouse on 02 Jan 1895 somewhere in Arkansas (probably either Lee County or Poinsett County). She died 17 Aug 1947 in Trumann, Poinsett County, Arkansas and is buried at Bolivar Cemetery in Greenfield, Poinsett County, Arkansas.

If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. She is my mothers' grandmother, and I would love to find some more info.

Thanks in advance.

The book I have of Ida Lancaster's is "Skaggs The Long Hunters". I don't have my book along ( I'm in AZ right now) but the book I have references the Skaggs families. Elizabeth Jane Cowden married John Scaggs and there is a short reference to John in the book I have back in WI.

I haven't seen her on the Scaggs/Skaggs forum for awhile. I'll see if I still have her address and email address. I'll email you some pictures.
Tell me where you fit in our family?
My aunt Cora Scaggs Fuller used to correspond with one of John's family years ago. Somewhere in my mess I may have her name, too. My aunt passed away in 1988..Pat

Joseph Cowden

I am still looking for information on Joseph Cowden, born abt. 1878. The 1930 US Census shows he was born in Tennesse, married to Hattie N, with six children. His son Herschel was my grandfather.

Other public trees show Joseph Cowden as being born in PA. There is a 1920 US Census showing a Joseph Cowden, as head of household with two females (mother and sister?), and no children. Also, there is an obituary that states that this Joseph never left PA.

The 1930 US Census shows him married to Hattie N with daughter Vernita as 23 yrs old and Herschel as 21 yrs. old. Therefore the two Joseph's in the 1920 and 1930 US Census' can't be the same individual.

Does anybody have any clue as to where I can find information on my Joseph Cowden, born abt 1878 in Tennessee?

Nathan Putnam Cowdin was born Apr 25, 1842 in Ellisburg, NY.
He may be the grandson of Putnam and Sally (Newton)Cowdin with whom he was living in Wyoming Co, NY in the 1850 Census. Putnam and Sally moved to Wyoming Co from Fitchburg, MA. Putnam is a descendant of James Cowdin of Worcester, MA who immigrated from Ireland about 1725. I am interested in learning more about Nathan Putnam's descendants as I am trying clear up his relationship with other Cowdens/Cowdins in the Ellisburg area.

Singletrack,

I have never heard anything from JungleJane since her last post, but I am still listening and found your information interesting. The bible she mentions seems like a great source of information, but she has never contacted me regarding it.
The child of John Lowery and Martha Linn (Sarah) that you mention died in 1867, so her name is not likely to be helpful in further research.
Do you have any information that might lead you to think Elizabeths husband could have been James Cowden? Through birthdates and locations I have suspected that John Lowery had two brothers in the area, James and William. No proof of that. I have never found anything on their parents. Do you have information that would indicate Elizabeth Smith and Martha Linn Smith are sisters? I'll do a little work on the sibling connection between these two and William Smith of Polk.
Do you have a civil war affiliation for William? Confederate or Union?

Ron

Jane, I found your post very interesting. I am searching the Cowden family of Bradley and Polk Co. Tennessee. These two counties are next to each, and it seems they are all related. The 1850c of Polk Co. lists your John Cowden, age 25, b. Tn., Martha Cowden, age 20, b. Tn., and Sarah J. Cowden, age 1, b. Tn. The family is found in Bradley Co. in the 1860c. And Martha and children are found in the 1880c in Bradley Co.
Also in the Polk Co. Census for 1850 are only two other families named Cowden. One family, I feel sure is mine. William Cowden and his family, which later move across the county line to Bradley. The other family in the 1850c is Elizabeth Cowden, 26, b. Tn., William Cowden, 8, b. Tn., Sarah C. Cowden, b. Tn., and Martha J. Cowden, 1, b. Tn.
Elizabeth appears to be a widow. The 1850 Mortality Schedule for Polk Co. list a John Cowden, died Apr 1850, age 28. (b.1822)
The 1860c of Bradley Co. has two of her children living with a William Smith, age 36, b. N.C. Elizabeth and the third child had evidently died, they are to be found anywhere. William Smith, must be Elizabeth's Brother.
There appears to be a relationship between all three families. Where they all lived in Polk Co. was near Benton, in Polk Co. My family lived in Bradley Co. near Benton of Polk Co.
Do you have any idea, as to who the Elizabeth Smith Cowden is? If we could figure this out, I might be able to tell you the possible parents of John L. Cowden.
Jane, Thanks for replying. Yes, here are the names I am searching. Thomas and Catherine Cowden. Samuel Cowden, Lyn Cowden, Walker Cowden, James Cowden, Thomas and William Cowden. They all lived in Bradley Co. or had connections to Bradley Co. There are two John Cowdens, one died in 1850, married to an Elizabeth. The other John died in the War Between the States, about 1863, Georgia, and married to Martha.
Also living in Bradley Co. was a Henry Cowden and wife Sarah. I feel sure all of these are related.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim

If I've answered this before, please forgive the repeat! Walker Cowden was born about 1816 in either Spartanburg/Greenville Cos., SC or Williamson or Blount Co., TN., if Thomas Cowden and Cattern ___ were his parents. Walker is believed to have been the brother of Lynn Cowden 1800-c.1880 of Sevier Co., TN and Benton Co., AR., my ancestor. Other brothers may have been Thomas Cowden of Bradley Co., TN., and Henry Cowden of Blount & McMinn Cos., TN., and possibly James Cowden of Sevier Co., TN.
Walker Cowden is listed on a tax list in Bradley Co., TN., where he lived after marrying Amy Kerr. They moved to Greene Co., MO., where he supposedly died 1843, and she remarried to John Steele.
I have MANY questions about this branch of our family, as well as my own, because of name confusion and other evidence. Sylvester Nash.
********
Roster Iowa Soldiers - War of Rebellion Vol 2
Cowden, Ephraim M. Age 44. Residence Liberty Township, nativity New
York. Enlisted Sept. 21, 1864. Mustered Sept. 21, 1864. Promoted
Fifer. Mustered out June 2, 1865, Washington, D. C. - Company D, 11th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry
Excerpt from the "Roster Iowa Soldiers - War of Rebellion Vol 2", Page 282
"After the fall of Atlanta, the Eleventh Iowa had several weeks of rest in camp. It then joined in the pursuit of Hood's army into northwestern Alabama. By the middle of November it returned to Atlanta, and, when the great march to the sea began, the regiment, with its brigade, was in its place in line. Arrived at Savannah, another period of several weeks of rest and recreation was enjoyed.
Early in 1865, the regiment, with its brigade, embarked for the short voyage on the Atlantic to Beaufort, S. C., and from that place again took up the line of march for the North. In this closing campaign of the war--noted for the great hardships endured by the troops upon the long and toilsome march, the skirmishes and conflicts with the retreating rebel army, which was compelled to surrender when successful resistance was no longer possible--the Eleventh Iowa performed its full share of duty.
After the surrender of Johnston's army at Raleigh, N. C., the Union troops marched on to Washington. Arriving there it went into camp, and, when the veteran troops of the Army of the Tennessee marched down Pennsylvania Avenue, no State was more proudly represented in that grand marching column of war worn and battle scarred veterans than Iowa, and among all the Iowa regiments none presented a more soldierly appearance or received greater honor from the cheering multitude than the Eleventh
Iowa and its associate organizations in the old Iowa Brigade.
From Washington the regiment proceeded by rail and steamboat to Louisville, Ky., where it was mustered out of the service of the United States on the 15th day of July, 1865. From Louisville, the regiment was sent to Davenport, Iowa. The citizens of this good city had witnessed the departure of the regiment for the war, had welcomed it upon its return on furlough as a veteran organization, had again witnessed its departure for the field after the brief visit of its officers and men at their homes, and they now extended a cordial and enthusiastic welcome to these war worn heroes, in response to which Col. William Hall, then broken in health and scarcely able to stand, said, "I cannot stand long enough to make a speech, I can only say to the citizens of Davenport, in response to the warm and generous welcome that they have extended to my comrades of the Eleventh Iowa, and myself, that the record we have made as good soldiers from the State of Iowa, while fighting in defense of our common country, will be duplicated by the record we shall make as good citizens, when we shall have returned to our homes and loved ones."
The regiment was then disbanded, and the veterans were soon on their way to their respective homes, there to receive the glad welcome of their families, friends and neighbors, and to make good the pledge of their old commander, in the record of good and faithful citizenship, which they established and maintained. "

The credit for the above notes goes to Karen Homer. Her Great Great Grandfather was Ephraim Cowdin.

Ephraim next married Corneilla Ann Dickson, daughter of Forgus Dickson and Harriet Nash, on 10 Oct 1843 in Illnois. (Corneilla Ann Dickson was born on 11 Oct 1824 in Erie County, PA and died in 1860 in Roscoe, Stearns County, Minnesota.)
Marriage Notes:
From London England
Ephraim married Mary Ann Howlett, daughter of George Howlett and Easter Bunting, on 15 Oct 1867 in Linn County Iowa. (Mary Ann Howlett was born about 1843 in London, England and died on 27 May 1919 in Eureka, Humbold County California.)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Mary A Crisman filed for Pension for John C Cowdin minor from his fathers civil war service on August 8, 1890, Application # 432123 in Nebraska.
