Hi Kate
My grandmother was Elsie Barnett, daughter of Sarah Cowdery and Jim Barnett (born 8 Sept 1908, married William Russell 1930). I believe you've mixed up her and her sister Edith on your family tree and photos. Did these photos come from a family wedding group photo? My mother Doreen has a copy. My grandfather William Russell was also on the photo.
It would be great to see copies of the original baptism records, wills and certificates of births, deaths and marriages you have.
Joan Thomas (nee Newton)

Hi Kate, Mathew and Letitia Cowdery were the parents of the step mother of my great grandfather, William Rutland. Their daughter Susannah married George Rutland. I'm just starting out in this mysterious game of family history and am finding it absolutely fascinating. If you happen to have a photo of Susannah, I would be most grateful. Kind regards Cate Francis

Jonathan Cowdery Surgeon-navy-1800-36

I’m not of the family just a helper and this is just a little lead.

Jonathan Cowdery was born in Mass. Lived most of his life in New York.
In Virginia he entered the Navy as a Surgeons Mate on Jan. 1, 1800, his pay was $30. Dollars a month and 2 rations a day. Then he was Commissioned as a Surgeon on Nov. 4, 1804 as lest that’s what the rosters say but Congress says 1807, his pay now is $50. Dollars a month and 2. Rations a day. From 1804 to 1813 no duty stations were on the rosters. In 1814 he was station at Norfolk Va. From 1815 to 1818 no duty station was given all though the 1818 rosters says he was not on duty. The rosters of 1819-29 says he was at the Norfolk Receiving ship, Rendezvous. In 1830 he was station on the Frigate Brandywine, then from 1831-34 he was back at Norfolk Va. The rosters of 1835 and 1836 says he was waiting orders. This is as far as my index goes. However The Library of Congress says he died some time in 1852.
ADDIE A. COWDERY (COWDREY)

Just saw your posting to the COWDERY message board. According to the genealogy work of Mary Bryant Alverson Mehling, Addie A. Cowdrey belongs to one of the "nine families unconnected as yet with William the emigrant". Her lineage for this family begins with JOHN COWDERY,b. abt 1814/1815 near Cleveland , OH. John's father's name is unknown and his mother died when John was "very young and he was taken by a family named FULTON". When he was 7 or 8 years old his father came back for him, saying he was taking John "down the Ohio River", but the Fulton family refused to give the boy up. This would have been about 1821.
According to Mehling, a LOREN COWDREY of McClurg, MO claimed that John was a cousin of Oliver Cowdery, but Mehling "failed to find a John Cowdery in the branch [of the Cowdery family]".
John married Orinda Nichols (Nickols) on 11/17/1836, at Amesville,OH. John died 01/13, 1894. John Orinda had 13 children, one of whom was LOREN G. COWDREY, b. 7/10/1839 at Athens, OH. Loren married B. A. FRIEND on 01/03, 1861. They had 7 children, one of whom was ADDIE A. COWDREY who married J. WHITEHEAD. The couple was living in Aurora, MO in 1902.
I hope this helps. I have some additional information. If you would like it, please contact me.

I am looking for any information on Charles Cowdery born in Davenport, Iowa, 1865. He was last heard of in Bruce Dawson County, Montana in 1917. I am writing a biography of his brother Samuel Franklin Cowdery and would welcome any information.
