Hi Linda, my link is through Catherine Cowe who married John Black, they lived in South Shields for a short while where a daughter was born in dec 1854 Eleanor Black. They
both originate from Northumberland. but it look's like Catherin's father came from Scotland. Is this connected to your Catherine.

reguards,Gladys.

Hi, Norna,
I agree with your scepticism and have been stuck here too - I think the mother was Margaret Cowe and that the answer may lie in the first two censuses. Please feel free to contact me at A.Cowe. on the domain hemscott.net to discuss further if you wish - I am working on Cowe family history in the hope (distant? forlorn?) of getting a definitive one-name study for the family and have quite a bit of background on the Cowe/Gourlay family, despite being unable to find the death of George!
Cowe Family Prestonkirk

My great grandfather was William Cowe born 1853 in Prestonkirk.
He worked as a groom in Yester and married the postmistress Agnes McIntyre (widow, nee Scott)before moving to Edinburgh where he was a coachman.
On both his marriage and death certificates his parents are down as William Cowe and Margaret Cowe (maiden name COWE.)
I am unable to find a William and Margaret Cowe that give an exact fit. either in birth, marriage or census records.
The general consensus looking at the various trees and message boards is that his father was George Cowe and mother Margaret Gourlay but it is difficult to make this tie in with my records.
Margaret is down as maiden name Cowe not Gourlay on both certificates. ... with no mention of any previous marriage.
Williams mother was alive at his wedding in 1884 but Margaret Gourlay died in 1881.
William snr is down as a "farm labourer" on both of William jnrs certificates whereas George was a road labourer.
I am new to this game and finding it fascinating and infuriating in turn.
Any light anyone can shed would be gratefully accepted.

Can you tell me whether George Gibson Gunn Rintoul Cowe was a descendant of George Gibson Gunn son of Robert Gunn and Agnes Aitken? George Gibson Gunn was born in Edinburgh/Leith in 1843, baptised 11 September 1843 at North Leith, married Elizabeth Robertson Kinnoch at st Andrew's Chuch Edinburgh in 1874. George Gibson Gunn was a Presbyterian Minister. One of their sons was also named George Gibson Gunn born about 1880. Agnes Aitken was my Gt.Gt.Gt.Aunt.

Alison Agnew
New Zealand
Hi Andrew
Thanks so much for your response. Am not sure but am currently chasing up some other leads from the very few relatives we have on the Cowe side of the family here in Australia. My mums cousin - Peter Cowe - is the son of John (aka Jock) and Milly Cowe. Jocks father was also named Peter Cowe and this is my mothers grandfather. Mum is sourcing her Dads birth certificate from Peters daughter Sandra Richardson. Peter had an enormous interest in geneology and has quite extensive documentation on the Cowe family. We are directly related to Charlotte Cowe who works for a geneology department in Edinburgh. Mum is the only remaining child of her parents George (aka Gunn) and Tafeeta (aka Elizabeth) so she is extremely interested in pursuing any avenues that leads to information on the Cowe family. Will have more information shortly so will keep you posted.
Cheers
Helen.

Hi, Deb, I think your family might be that of Andrew Cowe and Janet Lockie/Leckie who married in Dalkeith in 1862. Andrew was the son of George Cowe and Margaret Gourlay and you will see from the East Lothian site that I am trying to find out what happened to George after Margaret's death. Do you know if George went to America and did some of the family return to Scotland? I have no record of Margaret's marriage to Robert Alexander.
Look forward to hearing from you, either on this site or by e-mail.

Hello there
I am not sure if I am speaking to Gordon or Janice. My name is Helen and I am from Australia. My mothers maiden name is Bettine Mary Cowe and she is the only daughter of George Gibson Gunn Rintoul Cowe born in Gavinton Scotland in 1901. His parents were Mary Rintoul married to Peter Cowe. We have stumbled across this website as I was showing mum how easy it was to look up anything on the internet. Having found this site we are extremely interested to see if we can find any further information from interested parties. Mum is also a distant relative of Charlotte Cowe from the geneology centre in Edinburgh. We travelled to Scotland in June 1997 and met briefly with her. I have registered my email address with ancestry.com and would love to hear back from anybody who can tell me more! We are from the state of Victoria in Australia. As a footnote my grandfather had 2 sisters, Jessie and Lillian and a brother called John who was known as Jock. Looking forward to hearing from anybody to whom this information may be interesting or relevant.

Cheers
Helen Johnson.

Thank you Janice for your reply. I found a ship list of 1892 when they came to New York and their distination says Minnesota. Robert Alexander b.1859 his wife Margaret (nee Cowe) b.1863 and their children .Now Just above them on this list is a family of Cowe's also heading for Minnesota. I can only assume that it is Margarets mom and dad .It says Andrew Cowe 58,Mrs Cowe ?Jenny 27,John 25,Georgina 21-says bricklayer so not sure if m.or f. and then Andrew 19. So I have searching the census for Minnesota and can not find them anywhere. Thanks Deb

Rob, the new message in this thread from Debbie has prompted me to post that I now know when Robert Cowe b 1826 in Linlithgow, died.

The info comes from his gravestone inscription - he's buried in Cockpen churchyard with his wife, two of his sons and his wife's father - and he died on 12 September 1916.

Unfortunately this still doesn't give his parents so I don't know if this information is actually of any use! However, a possibly birth entry on the IGI suggests that his parents may be John Cowe and Catherine Young.

Janice

In reading the messages about the Cowe Name, has anyone come across a Janet Cowe born 1840 Scotland? In the 1871 Scotland census Janet is 31 years old and there is not a husband listed. Janet has Margaret who is 8 at the time and George 6, John 3 and Robert 1 years old in 1871.They live in East Lothian, and address is Farm House , civil Parish is Gladsmuir. Margaret is the child that would be of my branch. I am looking for more info on Janet Cowe if anyone has some to share. Thank you Debbie

Hi Mandy

Thanks for your message - I don't recognise the names William and Alison, although I haven't gone any further back than Robert Cowe so they are possibly related, but a generation or two further back.

A quick check on the IGI at FamilySearch.com reveals that Robert's parents seem to be John Cowe and Catherine Young. Robert was christened on 6 November 1826 at Linlithgow (this ties in with census information on his age and birthplace). Do his parents' names mean anything to you?

Janice
Hi Rob

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't have either Robert Cowe's death cert, nor his marriage cert. According to census info he was born in Linlithgow in about 1826 and was a platelayer or a railway labourer. I also know that he was still alive in June 1897 when his wife Isabella nee Reddie died as he signed the death certificate.

I can't pin him down for sure in 1841, but in 1851 he was living next door to his future parents-in-law in Appin Crescent, Dunfermline. Unfortunately it seems that by this time he's not with his family.

It's actually his wife Isabella Stevenson Reddie that is more directly connected to me - she was my 2 x great grandfather's sister.

I'd be interested to know if any of this ties in with any of your Cowes!

Best wishes.

Janice
Hi Janice,
I'm researching many branches of Cowes in lowland Scotland, but don't recognise this family. Have you found a death certificate for Robert Cowe, which should give his parents? If so, I might be able to match him up with one of my trees.
Rob
