Joshua Cowell (1712- 8 Sep 1756) Death at Lake George

Joshua Cowell was my 6th great grandfather. Joshua's son John Cowell was my 5th great grandfather. Has anyone seen concrete evidence of Joshua's death being 8 Sep 1756? Is his burial location known? I am wondering if there may have been a transcription error. I believe that The Battle of Lake George occurred on 08 Sep 1755. The day and month may be a coincidence; however, 1755 sounds more likely if September 8th is correct. Thanks for any insight.

Jeff

Please email me for more details: myroncowell@q.com.
I give some details on our Cowell line that starts with Christian Cowell of Greene Co, PA d. there in 1815 b. abt 1735 maybe Bucks Co, PA. One of his youngest sons was Andrew Cowell b. abt 1778 and died in 1828 in Greene Co, PA. Of his children five were sons - William, John, Andrew Jr, Joseph (my GGGGrandfather)and Isaac Jacob the youngest. After Andrews dead in 1828 widow Elizabeth took most of her family west to include all four of her sons' families. Isaac Jacob unmarreid stayed with her in Northern Ohio until he married there and moved on to Barry Co, MI. William moved to Monroe Co, IL, John and Andrew Jr moved to OH (Cuyahoga and Monroe Counties respectively) and then moved to Fulton Co, IL. After a year or two in Fulton Co, Il Andrew Jr moved on to Clinton Co, IA. My Joesph Cowell moved directly to Champaing Co, IL from PA and then to Vermilion Co, IL and moved with one daughter Rachel and youngest son Isaac (my GGGrandfather) to Barry Co, MI to live with brother Isaac Jacob in 1850 census. Daughter Rachel married Asa Rice there and the two families moved back to Georgetown TWP, Vermilion Co,IL in early 1850s. Andrew Jr moved from Clinton Co, IA to MO (forgot county, but can look it up) after he became ill to live near in-laws the Stine family. I have been given a 1857 ledger with Andrew Jr and his daughter Cynthia Cowell Williams family data (births, deaths, marriages)and a her husbands and son's dialy diary on life on the Iowa frontier starting in 1862 - interesting reading. Andrew Jr died of palsy in MO and his family still resides there today. I have yet to make direct contact with any of them. If you can find a connection with my line I will provide email addresses of our Cowell research group and our email archieve file.Chuck Cowell of Pittsburg, PA has researched the line for over 35 years and has written the book "Until The Cowell's Come Home" that documents our line. Drop me an email and we can discuss this further. Myron Cowell LtCol USAF Ret

Bernard Cowell was listed as being born in Pennsylvania, and I figured that the Chauncy, Chancey name was probably unusual enough that this was the family. They are probably related from an earlier ancestor. Thanks.

I am trying to trace Bernard E. "Barney" Cowell who married Margaret Bradley in St. Louis, MO in 1850. He died of cholera there in 1867. Birth years vary in the census records from 1815 to 1830. He had a son named Chancey so I connect him to this family. I noticed you reference a Bradley so I'm hoping the bible record includes this family. Hope you still have copies of the information and that we have the connection. This is my husband's grandmother's family. Thanks so much.

Some of the data that Vera Allen is incorrect. Here is the correct data on Joseph Cowell my GGGGrand father. I have corresponded often with Vera and Charles Cowell who has written his research "Until The Cowell's Come Home".I notice from your posting that you appear to come from Christian Cowell family of Greene Co, PA died there in 1815. Charles "Chuck" line is from a son named Isaac Cowell a Rev War vet. The oldest son Abraham was a loyalist and left for Canada to escape pressure during the war. A younger son Andrew is our line. His son's are Andrew Jr, William, John, Joseph (my GGGGrandfather) and Isaac Jacob. After Andrew died in Greene Co, PA in 1828 his widow Elizabeth moved the family to Ashland Co, OH with the exception of Joseph who apparently went directly to Champaign and Vermilion Counties of Illinois with in-laws the Ogden's. William, John and Andrew Jr ended up then in Fulton Co, IL where after a short period a year or more Andrew Jr moved to Clinton Co, IA. After he became ill with palsy we move family to Missouri to be near in-laws the Stine family where he died shortly thereafter. A relative recently gave a 1857 ledger that contains lists of Andrew Cowell JR and William family births, deaths and marriages. His daughter Cynthia Cowell Williams apparently owned this ledger which her husband Abraham Williams started a diary in 1 Jan 1863 and later his son continued the daily diary for a few years.
John and William Cowell died in Fulton Co, IL. The youngest unmarried son Isaac Jacob stay with his mother Elizabeth in Ashland OH before marrying Cordelia Beech and then moved to Barry Co, MI. My GGGGrandfather Joseph, wife Catherine, daughter Rachel, and young son Isaac joined him there in the 1850 census. Rachel married a widower Asa Rice after arriving in MI. The Joseph Cowell and Asa Rice families then returned to Georgetown (Vermilion Co), IL where I was raised. Joseph and Catherine (early history says Sara)had the following children: Jospeph Jr - we can find only is his listing in 1830 Greene Co, PA census (no name) and marriage to Miranda Pierce in Vermilion Co, IL in 1848. Amanda married widower Harvey Cloe, Louisa married Hiram Brown, Rachel married in order Asa Rice, Sprouls, and James Boner and she is buried under Boner name near Joseph and daughters Mary - never married and Amanda. I have recently found another daughter Adelia age 6 die 1852 in a cemetery near Liberty in the neirghhood I was raised in. Joseph's son Isaac my GGGrandfather is buried in Soldiers Circle in Danville, IL Springhill Cemetery. The rest of the family is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. I have not found Catherine Ogden Cowell's burial, but hope to find it this spring when I return for reunions this spring. I have much more history if you want it. Drop me a line. myroncowell@q.com
Myron Cowell
LtCol USAF Ret
The following history of my Cowell family from Illinois where I was raised is as follows: the starts with Christian Cowell family of Greene Co, PA died there in 1815. Cousin Charles Cowell of Pittsburg, PA has researched the line for over 35 years and authored he book "Until the Cowells Come Home" on family genealogy. His line is from a son named Isaac Cowell a Rev War vet. The oldest son Abraham was a loyalist and left for Canada to escape pressure during the war. A younger son Andrew is our line. The Joseph Cowell and Asa Rice families then returned to Georgetown (Vermilion Co), IL where I was raised. I know from my research at least two other Cowell lines existed in the 1830 to 1860 time frame. One family migrated from TN or KY from the Joseph Cowell line there. Another Joseph Cowell entered Fulton Co, IL from back east and is unlated to my line.
Ref your request of Cowell's in Missouri. One of my Cowell branch end up in Missouri. That was Andrew Cowell Jr. Our Cowell family begins in Greene Co, PA with Christian Cowell d. there in 1815. His oldest son was a loyalist and left for Canada. Another son Isaac was Rev War Vet and is descendant Charles Cowell of Pittsburg, PA has researched the family line and authored the book "Until The Cowells Come Home". Contact me and I can arrange for you to get copy. A younger son Andrew Cowell is my line with sons: Andrew Jr,Joseph (my GGGGrandfather), John, William and Isaac Jocab. After Andrews death in Greene Co, PA in 1828 the family migrated west -first to Ohio. My Joseph was the exception and went straight to Champaign and Vermilion Counties of IL. Andrew Jr, William and John ended up in Fulton Co, IL. Andrew Jr was only there a year or two and moved on to Clinton Co, IA and when we become will with palsy he moved his family to Missoure to be near is inlaws the Stine family and he died shortly thereafter. I do not have direct contact with those descendants. John and William died in Fulton Co, IL. Younges son Isaac Jacob married in Ashland, OH and left is mother Elizabeth there and moved to Barry Co, MI. My Joseph, wife and two children still at home joined him there in the 1850 census, but returned to Georgetown, IL area where I was raised. If you are interest in more details contact me and I will try and find the county in Missour where the family of Andrew Jr is today.

I am also researching early Cowell family. My Grandmother was Mabel Flora Cowell, b. date not known at this point in ? the New Haven area of Ct.. She married Wm Clark and they had 3 daughters My mother was the first, Catherine R. Clark, born in 1905 in Woodbridge, New Haven, Ct. This area was full of Cowell families. I have never researched the New Jersey area for my line. When I read your email, a light went on! Mother did say there were relatives in New Jersey. The families mother refered to were very involved in the "New thing", Photography. If you research New Haven; Woodbridge, and other areas of Ct. Think you might be surprised as to the number. I remember mother saying "There was a midget who was a "Bear Back rider in the Barnam and Bailies Circus in the late 1800' or early 1900's. I will keep you in mind as I try researching my line. There are a lot of Cowells early on, I just can't seem to connect. (I'm 74 and not too sharp!) Good luck in your research Would have no objecting to your emailing an questions. "Merry Christmas".
Elizabeth Rousseau

Leland Cowell - Colorado

Leland Cowell (1912-1981) was born, lived and died in the Denver area of Colorado. He had a daughter named Barbara Darlene Cowell (born 1934), who married a Chapman. Leland also may have had a son. I am interested in the full name of Leland's wife (Barbara's mother), as well as the name of Barbara's brother and other other siblings that may have existed.

The name of Leland's wife may have been Pauline or Paula. According to some family members, she was Native American (Apache).

Anyone have any information? The family trees uploaded here are rife with misinformation, so please don't bother to report data from one of those trees.

I'm trying to sort out my great-grandmother's side of my family. Her name was Sadie Cowell, born in 1886 in Newton, NJ. I have some handwritten notes from her stating her mother was Lutisha (Beck) Cowell (1849-1926), and I believe her husband's name was William (no dates). Sadie had a brother, Milton (1872-1905) who had 5 children and a sister, Ada (1883-1936) who married but did not have children. William and Lutisha's parents I am just unable to pin down. Any help is highly appreciated!

Elizabeth Cowell of Arrington, Cambridgeshire (1825-1864)

I'm researching parents Jospeh and Elizabeth Cowell of Elizabeth Cowell baptised 27 Mar 1825 (IGI). According to Elizabeth's marriage certificate to James Gowler on 19 Oct 1849 her father Joseph was a Labourer. James and Elizabeth Gowler then lived in St Ives, Huntingdonshire where I have found two children James and Elizabeth Ann.

I have been unable to pinpoint anything in the way of marriage, birth or death dates for Joseph and Elizabeth, or a maiden name.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Alan

HI Betty, It was wondeful to have such a great chat. I did send you an email message the other day to see if your computer is ok so I can send you some papers that I can scan. Did you get that message? I was trying to decide what to send you, and I think I need to get my pedigree charts filled in a bit more so I can print them off and then copy them to mail to you. My work-sheet pedigree charts are all in pencil which won't copy well. I look forward to getting this organized so I can share it all with you. Let me know if your email is up and working - plinville@verizon.net. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Priscilla
