Yes, my mother's grandmother was a Cowherd, daughter of Colby and Susanna Edwards. Which one are you related to? I have been contacted by slave decendents of my ancestor Colby Cowherd as well and plan to meet with them on my next visit. That was very interesting. My cousin has Colby's original pardon by the President and oath of allegiance. I have a photo of this. If you would like to contact me, my email is baults@swbell.net. I have been doing this off and on for many years and now that I am retired, I am trying to catch up.

Yes, that was the one. At least half of it was all Cowherd ancestors on the right side of the cemetery if you are looking at it from the road. Do you know where there are other Cowherd cemeteries? My sister and I love to go and search for our ancestors.

Yes it was.

Which cemetery did you go to. The one outside of Campbellsville? I went there several years ago. The land was owned by someone who had lots of cows who had walked through the graveyard and done lots of damage. Mickey Cowherd had a fence put up around it and had plans to do more work, but died before he could complete it.

Worth every cent wasn't it??? By the way, all of you Cowherd relatives. I visited the Cowherd cemetery in Kentucky this past August and was sorry to see that it has not been very cared for. Many of the stones were broken and laying against other stones. Some of the stones cannot even be read anymore. I wish there was a way to clean??? these stones and fix others and keep this maintained. I had taken pictures a few years before of many of the stones which are still not all posted on Ancestry yet, but I was upset not to be able to read many of them anymore after this short of a time. Any ideas???

You could list it on Amazon.com and a family member would snap it right up. That is where I found mine. I paid over $100 for my copy and it was worth every cent. Anyone interested can go to Amazon and make a wish list and add this book and Amazon will notify you if one becomes available.

I'm pretty sure I have all his children down to me. :) but that's all that I have. I can't find siblings for him, or parents. I found something somewhere for a Benjamin Coward being his father (can't find it now).. and I found this gentleman, but now I can't find anything to support that, so I'm just not sure. My grandparents couldn't even remember that far back, so I'm out of options.

The NEW URL for the Cowart-Coward-Cowherd Surname DNA Project is:
http://bellsouthpwp2.net/t/h/themcbees1/Cowart-Coward-Cowher...

Hopefully, we can pull together many of the males in the family who are still with us to get answers about those who are not! Just like me, the females in the family can help by encouraging their male Cowart-Coward-Cowherd relatives to participate (I’ve ordered a kit for a Cowart cousin on behalf of my Cowart Family). With the 37 marker test, we can tease apart the different Cowart-Coward-Cowherd lines and I know that many of us would be interested in the answer to those questions.

Who is the father of Seaborn I. Cowart b.1817 d. 1884 m. Nancy Davis ?

I am running into a problem with the line of Missouri Angeline Cowart (b. 1859 d.1950. She married William Norris Pinkney Kennedy (b.1855 d. 1911 his name may also be James William Norris Pinkney Kennedy). They were married 18 May 1878 in OK She may have remarried (but I am not certain of this or if they had children) to J.H. McElory abt 1911 (if anyone has any information on this please contact me)

Her parents are Seaborn I. Cowart (Coward) b.1817 d. abt 1884 and Nancy Davis b. 1817 d. 1870. They married in 1839 in GA. I am not sure what his middle initial stands for I have found him listed as Seaborn Ingram and as Seaborn Isaac.

Seaborn Cowart’s father is Malachi Cowart b. 1783/1784 in Dobbs Co., NC. This is where the problem begins. I have found Malachi Cowart’s father listed as Zachariah and as Needham Cowart/Coward/Cowherd. These two brothers both had sons named Malachi. Both born in Dobb Co., NC.

Needham’s son Malachi was born in 1784 and Zachariah’s son Malachi was born in/abt 1783. I have found that both of these Malachi’s are listed as the father of Seaborn who is the father of Missouri Angeline.

Needham married Esther Phoebe Blount (b. abt 1760 d. abt 1793)
Zachariah married Elizabeth DeLane (b. abt 1758 d. 1831)

Needham and Zachariah’s parents are Edward Cowart/Coward/Cowherd (I have found him under each variation) b. Abt 1723 in NC and Dorcas Roberts (have found her listed as Jane Dorcas Roberts) b. abt 1727 in NC d. abt 1790 married abt. 1742

Can anyone help me straighten this mess out please? I would greatly appreciate it. My email address is helenmcknight79@hotmail.com

Thanks

Helen

Parents of Seaborn I. Cowart

Years ago when I first researched this line, I had the parents of Seaborn I. Cowart listed as Zachariah Cowart and Elizabeth DeLane. A couple nights ago I was going back through my informations on the Cowart/Coward/Cowherd line and came up with 19 results on this site, and there seems to be a split on his parents. Some have it listed as I do, Zachariah Cowart and Elizabeth DeLane. While the other half has his parents listed as Needham Cowart and Phoebe Blount. Needham and Zachariah are brothers. They are the sons of Edward Coward (Cowherd) and Jane Dorcas Roberts. Does anyone know which of the brothers really is Seaborn I. Cowart's father? I have Seaborn born in 1817 in SC and death about 1884 in GA, burial at Rocky Creek Methodist Cemetery in Houston Co., GA. He married Nancy Blue Davis in 1839 in Early Co., GA

I was also wondering if anyone has any photographs of any of the Cowart, Coward, Cowherd, Davis families they wouldnt mind sharing?

helenmcknight79@hotmail.com
I dont really have a lot of information on that side of the family, cant seem to get past 1880.
It is quite possible that there are a lot of African American Cowherds because my mother always told me that the cowherds had owned slaves.
It was also proven to be the case when my sister was in middle school, and there was another student who was African American with the cowherd last name, who turned out to be our cousin.

I went this past weekend to Shelbyville, Ky. to one day to research my families genealogy lines. I found this much wanted book in the library and I found out that it has genealogy info. down to my father in it. I would love to have a copy also. Is there some way to copy out of print books? If you find out or have any information please let me know.
Anita
217-663-2159
