Re: Friday, Fridy, Cohick

Sam Matt Fridy was brother to my great, great, great grandfather Reuben Fridy. The Pennsylvania Fridy's ( Freitags, Friday's ), came to Pennsylvania from Baden, Germany in the mid-1700's. The Patriarch was Wendell Jacob Fridy ( 6x my great grandfather ) who married Saloma Joutin Yost. They had 3 children Christian, Jacob & Matthias. Christian's surname was Friday while his 2 brothers kept the surname Fridy. I believe Christian's lineage moved to Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and possibly California. Matthias Fridy was Sam Matt's grandfather. Sam Matt was probably the most influential & successful Fridy in the tree as he was involved in politics and other public forums. I personally have hit a road block as I can find no documentation on Wendell Jacob Freitag's ancestors in Germany. As for the Cowhick ( Cohick) woman, do you know her or the Fridys 1st names as I can probably link the family connection there. If you get a chance please don't hesitate to respond.
Sincerely,
Ben fridy

Lawrence Cowick was my grandfather and I remember hearing the names you mentioned.

When I was very little, Grandpa took us to meet his grandmother. I'll never forget it, because she had no nose! I think Minnie was there, maybe even Murle. But I'll never forget missing nose. They made me sit on her lap.

She had lost her nose because they said she had a cancer on it that kept getting bigger - so they just cut it off! I must have been 3 or 4 years old at the time, so it was in the early 1950's.

So - Hi cousin! Barbara "Linn" Cowick

John COWICK of Anson Co., NC

I am looking for information on John COWICK who was listed in the 1850 Census of Anson Co., NC with wife, Margaret WALLACE.

1850 Census of Anson Co., NC
HH 6/6
John Cowick, 37 M Trimser & Harness maker $500 b PA
Margaret Cowick, 27 F b NC
Laura A. Cowick, 5 F b NC
John D. Cowick, 2 M b NC

John COWICK and wife, Margaret WALLACE and Isham A. WALLACE and wife, Mary Ann sold land in Anson Co., NC in 1855. Margaret WALLACE is possibly the daughter of Isham A. and Mary Ann WALLACE although this has not been proven. Another theory would be that John COWICK could possibly be a brother to Mary Ann, the wife of Isham A. WALLACE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for anyone who can tell me anything about James R. Cowick b. abt 1858 Jefferson, Henry Co, IN and d. abt 1925. He was one of the sons of Isaac Cowick and Aletha Valentine. He married Phoebe Highley on 7Nov1880 in Carrollton, Carroll County, MO. I have a copy of their marriage license. They migrated to Kansas City, MO and then divorced in 1912 in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. Phoebe remarried someone with the last name of McCrackin or McCracken. I cannot locate him after the divorce. He is my Great Grandfather. I have found the graves of Isaac and many other family members but cannot find the grave of James or his trail after the divorce until he died. I actually don't have confirmation that is the correct year he died. If anyone knows anything about this I'd really appreciate if they would share it with me. Thanks!

hi patricia,i became interested in the cowick family when my grandmother passed away and my mother couldn't remember much about this side of the family. This is what i know at the moment. My great grandfather THOMAS was what you would call a professional fisherman,he caught fish out of the missouri river and sold it in town.He also worked for the state meassureing the depths of the missouri. When my mother-LYDIA-was very young she contracted reumatic fever and THOMAS woould sit with her and teach her reading,math,etc.. she learned to read the newspaper when she was 4 years old thanks to THOMAS.Later in years he lived with his daughter CATHERINE-my grandmother-and died of consumption.Apparently THOMAS's mother LIDIA worked in HIWASSA arkansas-not sure of that spelling-at a brewery.Leo passed away in 2001.This is all i know at the moment.
i woould like to know of your family as well, hope to hear from you soon, cousin, keep in touch, any questions i can answer i will.
sheri

Hello Sheri! I'm so glad I found you! I too would love to exchange any info possible. It seems the Cowick history is hidden behind so much mystery. Here is everything I know. My Grandfather was Frank James Cowick b-5-15-1883 in Kansas City, MO. He worked for Kansas City Power & Light Company until he died on 6-21-1931. He married my Grandmother, Louise Pauline Schenk b-1-10-1891 (changed spelling to Shank at some point) on 12-18-1906. They had 8 children that I know of. They are HELEN BERTHA COWICK b-7-23-1908, d-8-19-1925; VIRGINIA LEE COWICK b-3-30-1925, d-5-13-1926; FRANK JAMES JR b-6-8-1911, d-7-26-1948; DOROTHY G, COWICK b-9-3-1916, d-8-11-2000; MARGARET LOUISE COWICK b-1920, d-1992; PAULINE KATHERINE COWICK b-9-24-1922, d-11-8-2001; BILLIE L. COWICK b-2-18-1927 and is still living; and then the youngest of the clan is my mother JOANNE COWICK b-12-22-30, d-10-9-2003. According to my mother, my Grandfathers brother was Thomas Cowick and his children we know about are BUCK-(Thomas Jr.), Leo, Catherine May and Lidia(sp?). I was told that Catherine May married Robert Rose. According to my Uncle Billie my Grandfather had a third brother and he was the youngest. He said that he moved to Arkansas when he was very young and they never saw him again and said he can't remember his first name. Said he thinks he went away around 1930 or so. It is my understanding, have not checked it yet but will, that my Grandfather FRANK JAMES COWICK is buried at Forest Hills Cemetary in Kansas City, MO. My Grandfathers father, my Great Grandfather was JAMES COWICK and he married PHOEBE HIGHLY. I have no other information on James but am searching. If you have anything on this I would love to know. As I progress with my search I will be glad to keep you posted. It is amazing how one little link can make everything so much clearer! Thank you so much for answering my message! Nice to meet you! PATRICIA STONEKING.

My Grandfather was Frank James Cowick of Kansas City, MO; born 5-15-83, died 6-21-31. His brother (my great uncle) was Thomas Cowick and he was married to Lidia. They had four children named Catherine May Cowick Rose, Thomas Jr (Buck), Leo and possibly the fourth child was also named Lidia after her mother but I'm not sure about that. My Great Grandmother (Grandfathers mother) was Phoebe Highly Cowick. I know that she had a second husband after Cowick with a surname of McCrackin. I have always been told that all Cowicks are related for what it's worth. Would love to hear from anyone who can fill some gaps for me as well.

hi there again.. i talked to my grandfather and i don't know how much this may help if any at all, but i ran the names past him you mentioned and he told me that as his family goes, his father was frank cowick, his mother was louise and he had a brother named frank, and several sisters whom were joanne, pauline, margaret, dorothy, helen and virginia. all of whom have past away. a couple of the sisters died very young of scarlett fever i believe. he is the last living cowick in our family, as he only had one son my father and he is past away also and only had 2 daughters myself being one. my grandfather told me that buck was a nickname he thought and that he was my grandfathers, dad (frank's) nephew i think he said it was his fathers brothers son, and that the rose family would have been my grandfathers second cousins i think and that he never really knew any of them well that he remembers some of them from when he was a boy. but some of the names did seem to ring a bell for him. i know that doesn't seem to tell you to much but it seems that somewhere down the line they were related. take care hope to hear back from you. did you also say you were from the kc area still? i live in overland park currently and i noticed your last name is pennington, i work with a couple of penningtons kim and his son john, would they happened to be related to you?

In my research of the COWHICK/COHICK/COWICK families, I find a connection to the surnames of FRIDY & FRIDAY from Lancaster Co., PA. One person in particular that shows up frequently is SAM MATT FRIDY. I also found a COHICK woman marrying a FRIDY and she has two children, and I remember one was JOSEPH. Are there any connections out there? Thank you

Hello Ellen:

Since I posted my original message last year i have learned that there are a lot more of us Cowicks out there than I thought. There are a lot of John Cowicks in our line stretching all the way back to the late 1700s. I can't seem to find any more of my Cowick "line" before 1805, so if you can provide any more information I would appreciate it.

Larry: I was interested to see your message
---not too many of these Cowicks around, are
there!! I'll tell you the work I have done so
far on that line. My 2nd great-grandmother was
Martha Cowick who married Adam Myers (Mayer)
in 1829. My 1st great-grandfather was John
Cowick Myers, their second child. On her
death certificate, I find her parents are
Daniel and Elizabeth Cohick. (Spellings are
not a problem with this name---it's spelled
2 dozen different ways, but mean the same
person).I also have done quite a bit of work
on Christian Cohick, who is Martha's brother.
I think there are several Cowicks (Cohicks)
who are related to one another in the West
Hempfield area, Lancaster Co., PA. At least,
my Cowick family seems to have stayed in the
area of West Hempfield. I'd love to hear from
you, Larry. Maybe we can come up with some
exciting news about this bunch!! Jean Holyoak

Hi, Ron: I think one of the best people to
get information from would be Mary Alice Tuxhorn: Tuxy2@aol.com. Her Cowick (Cowhick) family came west into the Illinois area and she also has records on Cowhicks in Missouri. My Cowick line ends with my 2nd great grandmother, Martha Cowick. Her parents
were Daniel and Elizabeth Cowick from West Hempfield, Lancaster Co., PA. I'm sure all these families are connected----all us Cowick kids are trying to figure out HOW we're connected!! Keep in touch----We'll find our answers sooner or later! Jean

I have the marriage record of William Tates who married Catharine Cowick on 21 May 1844 in New Cumberland, PA. I found them in the Cumberlalnd Co., PA 1850 Census and it showed that William b. 1815, Catharine b. 1820, and their son John b. 1844. Does anyone have any information on this family beyond 1850?
I can trace my Cowick ancestors only back to my grandfather.
I am Ronald Cowick. My father was Roy Murle Cowick, born in 1908. His brother was Lawrence Cowick. Their father (my grandfather) was Joseph Robert Cowick. They lived around Carrolton, Missouri and Kansas City in the early 1900s. My father did not know his grandfather, but told me he was called "Old Joe". This as far back as I can trace. I am sure there is a link to your family in Pennsylvania.
Please respond with more information.

I am Ronald Cowick. My father was Roy Murle Cowick and his brother was Lawrence Cowick.
Their father was Joseph Robert Cowick. They lived around Carrolton, Missouri and Kansas City in the early 1900s. Joseph Robert had a brother, "Ross", and a sister, "Minnie".

Tina, I think it is very unusal to see the name Cowick outside my immediate family. I don't know of a John Cowick but those dates are way earlier then I have ever been back. The Cowicks that I know of worked on the railroad in the early part of the century. Call my e-mail, I am currently looking for a Bruce Cowick, Born British Colomubia 1951.
