Hello Phil

Had any luck with the Cowie line? I have a Great Grandfather John Cowie 1864 who I believe was born in Northumberland and later lived in Sunderland, Durham. His Children as far as I am aware were -

Annie 1888
Catherine 1890
William 1895
Henry 1897
George 1900 (my Grandfather)
John 1906
and confusingly a 2nd Catherine 1909 but this could be a transcription error.

The spelling varies between Cowrie, Cowey and Cowie sometimes withing the same census record, but I *think* the parents of John (1864)were George (1838) & Catherine (1843)
His grandparents John (1806)& Elizabeth (1813)
I searched Ancestry for "Robert Cowie, born in Scotland in 1832 and died in Canada." The return had an 1841 census of Dundee with Robert Cowie,10, Barbara,45, John Cowie 20,,Eliza 10 (must have been a twin of Robert) and George,5
That makes Barbara born in 1796. So the Barbara Cowie who arrived in New York May 28. 1848, age 30 is either a daughter or neice of the older one..She was married to James Cowie.THe ship was the Harmony. James is listed as 34 if that helps you any.Jessie

In the 1841 Census 0f Scotland there was a George Cowie,5, child of Barbara Cowie who lived in parish 282, address Stobbs Well park, Angus county,Dundee, Scotland. No father listed on this, but one Barbara Cowie was married to a James Cowie, a seaman. Also about this dacade some Cowie got deported to Australia, probably as a debetor. Very common. 110 people were in the poor house in Aberdine in the 1840s.Contact me for more data. Jessie

Sorry, I forgot you were asking about Canada. Basiclly the answer is the same. Search thur the Latter Dad Saints (Mormon's) records, which you can do at home on the computer. If you find a film covering the right time and place you have to personally go to one of their centers and order it, pay $6, wait 2 wks for it to come from Salt Lake City, read it (30Min-1 hr). Or search their thier database while you are there and then print off what you want to. Or, you can join Ancestry.com and persue it on line. To get a copy of the real birth certificate write PAC or Archives of ONtario if it is the right Province.

I think births were not required to be nationally repoted until 1889. So that means fining a Presbyterian Church that had the records, or through FHL search for "old Parish records"ofScotland. These go out to FH Centers on loan ($6)now. First you need to narrow to what county they came from. Then try to narrow it to a few likly churches, rent, view and if lucky find your data.I spent all day in Edinburgh one year reading films.Good Luck. Ancestry has most all these which you cane access on line if you are a member.

I have only just started my research but I happened accross Zoe's post on rootsweb dated 14 Dec 05 and subsequently your reply/queery to her. My great grandfather is John Cowie b1864 (also on her list). I noticed that Robert Cowie b1868 was just 4 years younger. So, I am wondering if they could be brothers? If you have done any research that could either confirm or deny this, I would love to hear what you have discovered.

Kind Regards,
Phil.

Hi Larry - Then you and I, too, are related - Annie Cowie was also my ggg-grandmother - I am a descendent of her daughter Mary Ann (also Marianne) Turriff, born 1819. (In fact, my father [born 1910] was Edward Turriff Henry, and he was often called "Turriff" by his family, to differentiate him from his father who was also Edward.) I have had contact with George McIntosh, who e-mailed me a massive Turriff family tree. Just out of curiosity, where did you find the info re William Turriff's parents and grandparents and possible g-grandfather David? (Or are you like me and write things down, but forget to write down where you found them...)

Hi Helen & Barb.
I'm working on the Cowe family of Berwickshire/East Lothian, and have recently found documentary evidence of switches to Cowie (& Cowan), usually after migrating to new areas -- probably to avoid all the Cow jokes!
All the issue at Chirnside to John Cow or Cowie/Ann Hendry, Wm/Janet Simpson, Thomas/Isobel Mack, and possibly that of Wm/Mary Simpson, can be traced to brothers James Cow(b.c.1722) & William Cow (b.c. 1730). About a dozen folk were called to court to give evidence in 1847 to prove that James' g-g-son Henry Charles Cowie in London was senior heir to his g-g-uncle William!...(whose line died out in 1846).
Rob

Helen,
I see you have a birth ref for William, 1/3/1824, West Barns, but can't find under Cowe or Cowie, with Mary, Ann or Marion as mother! There was a William Cowe from a well-researched line, b. 1804, Cove, Cockburnspath who was a blacksmith at Thurston Smithy, Innerwick in 1841 & 1851 with his children, who were born in Dunbar 1826 & 1827. Another William Cow was alone in the smithy outhouse in 1841, supposedly aged '20', whilst a George Cow was also at the Smithy in 1851, aged 25, born Dunbar.
It is possible that William b. 1804 had George & William (both blacksmith's journeymen) before his marriages to Agnes Goodall in 1826, at Dunbar, and again to Ann Smith, 1831. He died in 1867 at Lochend Cottages, Dunbar.

So William was at Oldcastles by 1885! There were two Cow families there in 1851, and one remaining in 1881....and Cowes still there in 1996....

Have you found your William in 1851, 1861 or 1871 censuses?

There seem to be very few Cowies in East Lothian at any time, except one huge unknown family in the 17th cent, four births at Prestonkirk or Prestonpans c. 1870s (all from a known Cowe root) and a few scattered marriages.

Your William would be 17 for the 1841 census, but if he was living alone, he may have 'expanded' his age....

Get back to me if any of this rings any bells

Rob

Rob,

At the moment I can see no connection to my Cowie family, descendants of William Cowie, b abt 1824 in Dunbar Haddington and d 1885 Oldcastles Chirnside. From his death certificate I know that his parents were William Cowie and Mary Ann Allan, but I have no details about them. My father thinks that the family may have come from Peebles initially - but no proof of this.

Chirnside is the right sort of place to find more of the family, but I don't recognise any of the names that you have mentioned.

I have had a brief look at other variations of the name, but not been succesful with making any connections. If you find anything that looks likely I would love to hear more. All the eldest sons back four generations from my great grandfather appear to have been called William if that is any help!

Cheers

Helen

They were handloom weavers . To cap it all, he had a photograph of John, James' father taken in Aberdeen c1865 - how's that for a scoop!

Re: COWIE in LANARK

This is Margaret's daughter Aimee. I am doing some research on my grandmother's family, the Cowie's. We have a Henry Cowie born in Lanark, married ( around 1840) to a Janet (possibly Jessie) Scott also of Lanark both New Monkland. Children would have been Agnus, Andrew, Henry (my GG grandfather M Elizabeth Paterson of Lanark), John, Margaret, Alexander, and Thomas. Henry's parents I think were Alexander Cowie and Agnes Barrie. Hope this helps and if you have any more recent data on the decendants of these folks, I am looking for them.
