Re: Hubert L Wilkinson/Hubert L Cowles adopted by Hiram Cowles, ~ 1869, Morris, CT (UPDATE)

Some further information gathered in the ensuing five years since my initial post :

Adoptive father's name was Horace rather than Hiram in all records found.

Hubert L Cowles is found in the 1870 and 1880 US Federal census records along with adoptive parents Horace and Mary E (Batterson) Cowles.

Hubert appears to have married a Minnie E (Cowles) (b. 1868 NY) in 1888 and by the time of the 1900 census they have a daughter Grace M Cowles b. 1889 NY and Ernest Hubert Cowles b. 1892 NY.

In the 1910 census Hubert and Minnie are again enumerated with both of the above children.

The 1917 WW 1 Draft record shows Ernest Hubert Cowles as being married and this is further supported by the 1930 census giving the marriage year as being in 1916.

The 1920 census finds Hubert and Minnie living by themselves

The 1930 census lists Minnie E Cowles as being a widow as head of house with daughter Grace M Cowles age 41 living with her. So Hubert L Cowles/Hubert L Wilkinson died after the 1920 census and before 1930.

Ernest Hubert Cowles is found in both 1920 and 1930 census records with wife Eunice W (Cowles) b. 1887 NY and daughter Marguerite Cowles b. 1921 in NY.

Hopefully this may be of interest to someone besides myself.

Bill Harvey

William A. Cowles 1846-1914 MI

I have just started working on this William A. Cowles from contact with a descendant of Wm/Nancy's son Clyde. This is what I have thus far:

His death certificate shows Orson and Jane [McWethey]as his parents. This William has a brother George who seems to have never married.

I have him in all census records from 1850 to his last census in 1910. By 1870 he has married a Nancy A. French (daughter of Thomas and Polly French)and is living with that Polly (a widow) in the 1870/1880 census'.

William and Nancy had 9 children, Ethel, Earnest, Cleora, Claude, Alice, Lulu, Pearl, Zell and Clyde. [Ethel, Cleora, Alice, Lulu and Zell all died from diphtheria in 1887.]

There are several trees that have a William Dexter Cowles [married Sarah] as the son of Orson and Jane, but from the death certificate and census records I have, I suspect they have the wrong parents. William Dexter Cowles moves to, and later dies in, South Dakota. William A. Cowles seems to never have left Calhoun County, Michigan.

Those same trees have data of an Orson Cowles from PA attached to the Orson in MI, which I believe to be another error.

Re: John COWLES -- Hannah HART - any evidence?

I have just spent the last hour trying to find any connection with the Hart's since this has been a piece of the puzzle that would be nice to have and I have just discovered the supposed "Hart connection". The only connection I have found is with a Stephen Hart who is in the area at the right time. And he did have a daughter (Rachel) who married a John Cole - but not the right John Cole. The daughters of Stephen would also not be the right age to have married John Cowles the immigrant whose son John married Deborah Bartlett. The age could indicate that Hannah might have been Stephen Hart's sister if anything.

However, I think this may be another case of someone making a guess, putting it on line in their tree and suddenly it becomes fact somehow. If indeed this is a true connection, I too would like to see at least a modicum of proof somewhere other than somebody's unsourced tree.

John COWLES -- Hannah HART - any evidence?

I've seen hundreds of family trees linking John (Cole) Cowles to wife Hannah HART. However I've never seen anyone mention how the name Hart came to be added. Yes I know, John (Cole) Cowles has been linked to more than one wife, but this just concerns Hannah.

According to "Genealogies of the Cowles Families" by Calvin D. Cowles, Volume I, page 25 , "The maiden name of Hannah, the wife of John Cowles, and the date and place of their marriage, are unknown."

Anyone know when this became "known"? I also see many adding dates of marriage both in America and in England. Did this ever become confirmed? Just curious what the evidence is out there for these claims. The only references seem to be other people's trees, which of course is not evidence.

I know the evidence for "Bushopp" is a marriage record in England citing John Cowles marrying Hannah Bushopp, but I find this sketchy as well as his name first appears as Cowles in court records of 1662 in CT per Calvin D. Cowles book.

Re: Gerald Cowles

Greetings, my name is Gregory(Greg) L. Cowles. I'm the only son of Lee Arnold Cowles who is your Grandpa's brother making you and I second cousins. I haven't seen, or talked to either your Mom, or your aunt in ages. I usaully get to talk to your Grandpa Rex about once a year either during the summer, or at Christmas time. I haven't seen, or talked to your Grandma Donna in over 25 years. The last time I seen her was when the ship I was stationed on in the Navy pulled into Seattle sometime in the lat 1980's. I hope this message finds you all out there in the west doing well. Your Great Aunt Rose at the time of her passing was married to Carl Derry. Rose was previously married to a Becker and someone else I can't remember. By those fathers she had three children named Cheryl, Rick, and Gary. While married to Carl she bore Carla, and Carl had a daughter from a previous marriage named Diane. All their children with the exception of Rick still live in Lower Michigan. Rick lives in the Tuson Arizona area. Your Great Uncle Lee is married to Betty Gene Cowles Salisbery(probably spelled it wrong) of Shepherd MI. I graduated from St. Louis High School in 1982, joined the Navy in July 1982, retired from the Navy in 2002, now a Civil Servant for the Navy, and live in Suffolk, VA. I was married to Lisa Ann Castellon in June of 1985, together we had one child in 1987 named Matthew Gregory, and we were regretfully divorced in 1992. I've never remarried, however I've had the same girlfriend for eleven years now. Her name is Clarisa Ann Henderson(Hicks). Maybe one day she will let me make an honest woman out of her. Which one of your Grandpa Rex's daughters are the child of? Feel free to contact me should you desire any more Cowles history from MI. I will try to help answer you the best I can. Have a great day.

Your grandfather and my grandmother were siblings.
Here's what I know: Loring D. Cowles (b.9/1850) and wife Margaret had Ida, Howard (b.1889), Hugh and Marvin. Howard married Agnes Sutherland Brown (b.9/1/1890 in Joliet Twp IL)daughter of James and Annee Brown. They had Howard, Colena, Arietta (aka Rita, my grandmother), James (your GF) and Ruth. Agnes passed away in Jan 1977. I have a couple old pics. That's all I know for now!
