I have just got in touch with a Mary about these very people. It seems Selina was the sister of my ancestor Martha Caroline Hopkins. Both of these women have on their marriage certificates a fathers called Moses Cowley, Linen Draper.

The mother's name, known from being with a daughter on the census, was also Martha. Another child and therefore brother to Selina and Martha Caroline appears to be George Henry Cowley who was born in Northampton in 1816.

Jon

I have now found Moses daughter Martha Caroline Cowley/Hopkins on the 1901 census in Camberwell and unlike the earlier ones, here her birthplace is given as Northampton.

Her mother Martha senior is known to have been born in Moulton, Northampton, from the census. Now Moulton is only just over twenty miles away from Kilsby and on the IGI there a few Moses Cowleys listed.

So maybe my Moses could have been from this line. There is a Moses Cowley Charity listed on the National Archives website but presently I have no idea from when this dates.

Moses Cowley, England, late 1700s-1800s

I have rather hit a wall with this individual and wondered if anyone else has any information.

He is named as father of my ancestor Martha Caroline Cowley on her 1848 marriage certificate.

His occupation is Linen Draper.

However he is not with his wife, also called Martha, on the 1841 census but she has the occupation of "Upholstress" so I assume he was dead by this time.

The mother and daughter were living in the London area at this time, where the daughter Martha Caroline had been born in 1826-1827.

His wife however was born in Moulton, Northamptonshire around 1783-1787 so it seems possible that Moses was from there also, and they came down south together after their marriage.

The IGI lists a George Henry Cowley who was born in 1816 and baptised at Brook Street Chapel (formerly Cow Lane Independent), Warwick, in 1836 when aged twenty. His parents are listed as being Moses and Martha Cowley.

I have found this George Cowley on the census and he was born in Northamptonshire, so I think this could be the elder brother of my Martha Caroline but I am not certain.

If anyone has any information or pointers I would be glad to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Jon

Hi! Leah,

No,Lottie Cowley married John G. Cowley who was from England. Lottie's maiden name was Crow. On the 1900 US Census for Illinois, Perry County, it shows:

John G. Cowley, was born Nov. 1842, had immigrated from England in 1872. He married Lottie Crow Taylor Jan 17, 1883 in Illinois.

That is all I have on the Cowley's.

Sorry!

Marilyn Crow Hayes
rhayes@classicnet.net

Hi,

Great reading your story. I am from the Cowley family who settled in Samoa, the Pacific Islands. My g.g.grandfather William Cowley came from England and married a Samoan woman, they had 8 children, one of the daughters Cecelia Cowley is my g.grandmother. My Dad is the grandson of hers and migrated to New Zealand in 1952. I understand that William Cowley originated from Isle of Man. Infact I learnt that the Cowley's and there were only one family came from Isle of Man and then migrated to all parts of the world. Very interesting history. I also understand there is a book on the Cowleys. Not sure where but perhaps can easily find out.

Cheers
Lea Cowley
Auckland
New Zealand
leac@xtra.co.nz

Hi Marilyn

Wandering if your Grand Aunt Lottie had connections with Cowley's from Samoa. Because in our geneology there is a Charlotte Lottie Cowley and Johnston with the same name. I believe this name is a ancestory name. My g.g.grandfather was William Cowley from England who married a Samoan about this time. I understand that the Cowley's had originated from Isle of Man. Have you had any luck to your research.

Cheers
Lea Cowley
Auckland
New Zealand
leac@xtra.co.nz

The only name I ever knew for him was "Dot" and that is the only name my father knew. If my grandmother knew another one, she never shared it with us.

The two census records I can find him in use the name "Dot Cowley" and his WWI registration card says he was single, a repairman for G & J Tireworks, he live on McKIm in Indianapolis, was a slender man of medium height, gray eyes and light colored hair. He was born 2 June 1893 in Elwood, Indiana. He was in the National Gaurd and later in the regular Army.

His WWII draft registration card also has only "Dot Cowley" It also supplies that he was born 2 June 1893 in Elwood, Indiana. He was employed by the New York Central Railroad, and lived in Indianapolis.

I know nothing at all about his family--other than the oral tradition that his family was from the Isle of Man. By the time I knew him, he was retired and living in Florida. I was a very small child, and most of what I remember revolves around sitting on the patio eating ice cream, or him having to bend down to hold my hand as we walked together.

There is no one left in my family to ask for more information.

Who were Bessie Cowley and the infant twins who died?

My grandmother - Girtrue Cowley Maxey - just recently mentioned she had an older sister Bessie (Bessy?) who died. Grandmother and her sister Evalou were 2 and 4 when their mother died in 1918 - Jennie Maude Bradley Cowley, married to William O. Cowley in MS - a few days after giving birth to twins who also died. Apparently, Bessie was already gone but no mention had ever been made of her. Jennie died in Van Zandt County, TX and is buried in Saltillo, MS. Jennie's mother was Emmaline Sandlin Bradley, also buried in Saltillo, MS. I am hoping someone knows this family history. Please send me any info you can. Grandmother is not doing well lately and I would love to tell her what she doesn't know or remember. Thank you. JLMT417@YAHOO.COM
Hi
I have just found your message concerning William Cowley and Catherine Clutterbuck. My maiden name was Cowley and I have several William Cowleys in my family tree, some living in the Eastington area and some in the Slimbridge area but none between the dates you state. I have found the Family Search site very helpful and I did find your Elizabeth Clutterbuck as being christened 20 May 1787 Rodborough and her mother's name was Kath! No mention of father though. I do have a George Cowley who married Dinah Clutterbuck 7 Dec 1806 in Eastington. I suspect they may be related to your ancestors. Dinah's father was Joshua Clutterbuck and her mother was Betty Banks who married 15 August 1779 in Eastington. Joshua's father was John Clutterbuck who married Hannah 30 Dec 1754 in Eastington. I don't know if any of this info helps. Pauline
My grandmother was a Cowley whose entire family lived in Elwood, Indiana. I think it's likely we are connected, although I don't recognize the name Dot. Was that a nickname for something else? Do you know anything about parents or siblings?

Hope to hear from you.

Bill

Sorry it took me several days to get back to you.

In Madison County, Indiana birth records as indexed by the WPA, there is a record of a child born 2 June 1893 to Thomas Cowley and Della Glass. The child's name is not given, but it seems pretty clear from what you know (his birthday) that this is the same person. That makes him my grandmother's first cousin, so you and I are pretty close relatives.

I think he might be the William D. Cowley, 17 years old, who lives with Hanna Glass, his grandmother, in the 1910 census.

If you would like, I can put together some information on the Cowleys and send it to you.
