Hi SVW,

My Great,Great,Great Grandfather was named Joseph born 1818 and married a Mary Fenton born 1817/18.

They had a son William born 1844, they also had another two children called Jane(1843) and Great,Great/Grandfather George (1840) who was the oldest.

They were married about 1839.

Joseph was born in Eastrington which is not far from Hull, so it is quite possible that this Joseph is your long lost relative, he was a farmer(Decoy Farm) at Airmyn near Goole for over 50 years and well respected within the community.

Its only taken 8 1/2 years but we get there in the end.

Regards

Phil C.

Mary "Polly" Cowling

According to the book "John and Prudence (Emrey) Lloyd, Their Descendants, and Some Allied Families" by Oliver C. Weaver, Jr., the parents of Mary are said to have been Josiah Cowling and Urania Monroe. This has never been proven. The known children of Josiah and Urania were John, Thomas, Jesse, Josiah, Elizabeth, Fletcher and Willis. The book goes on to say that after Polly and William Lloyd married they lived or owned land in Warren, JACKSON and Clarke Co. GA (before moving to the MS territory) and that Mary's brother JOSEPH was a neighbor and adjoining land owner in Clarke Co. GA.

While looking over various family trees on Rootsweb and Ancestry.com I happened to notice a listing for a Benjamin Cowling who was born in 1750, Nansemond Co. VA (where Mary was also born). It gives his father as James Cowling Sr. The family trees then list the father of James to be Thomas Cowling and Thomas's father as Christopher Cowlinge.....(Christopher is the ancestor of Josiah Cowling). Children of Benjamin are named as James, Nancy, Stanton and William JOSEPH. Benjamin lived in JACKSON Co. GA. A will mentioned Polly, but it was the custom to only mention underage children....possibly the will was not updated after Mary/Polly married William Lloyd? JOSEPH married his wife in Clarke Co., GA. Also, JOSEPH moved his family to Tennesee in 1811....Mary and William moved to the MS during the same time. I have not seen any proof (will, etc.) concerning the Benjamin Cowling line, but I have a possible theory.........Christopher Cowlinge's son was Thomas...Thomas had a son James....James had Benjamin...Benjamin had Mary 'Polly'; re: the link to Josiah Cowling and Urania Monro......Christopher Cowlinge, his son Thomas, his son was James....did James have sons Josiah AND Benjamin? This could be where the confusion is. Possibly Josiah and Urania were Mary/Polly's aunt and uncle?

I have another possible theory based on family trees posted on Rootsweb/Ancestry.com.....

I am trying to trace a William George Cowling - born 27 Sept 1877 in Mary Tavy, Tavistock, Devon. Parents:- Henry and Mary Ann (Doidge)

He arrived Montreal on 5 Jun 1904 on board "Dominion" He was single and described as a bricklayer. After this date I can find no trace of him, either in Canada or UK. He is known to have had Doidge relatives in London, Ont. and when his brother visited 8-10 years later he visited St. Thomas (1911 census), Cobalt and North Bay.

Does any of this tie in with your records?

I'm looking for any information at all on John Cowling, born about 1837 (apparently Apr 8, 1837) somewhere in England, who apparently emmigrated to Canada in 1857, lived in Newcastle, Durham Township, Ontario, and at some time married Ann Moyse, and lived in Springfield, Michigan USA from 1907 to 1910 and died in Michigan in 1910.

I'm desparately trying to find information on his parents, where in England he was born, and when he married, but all information including marraige records is sketchy, inconclusive, or absent, prior to the 1881 Canadian Census.

HI John

I am descended from John and Judith Cowling/Coulin/Coolin and as you will see from john and Judith onwards we stuck with the cowling variation. I am sure they are all the same family with different spellings - largely due repeated family christian names and the fact that they all stayed in one place for such a long preiod of time. Through easingwold parish records I can trace to Thomas in 1710 married to Anne wrigglesworth. Do you have any theories as to where Thomas came from? It does not appear to be Easingwold

thanks

sarah

Hi William

I believe that I have this family in my wife's tree. William (9) is listed with the family in the 1841 census living in Stillington village in Yorkshire. William's father was also William, but the name was then spelled Coolin. I believe that this William was the son of John Coolin (born Easingwold) and Judith Lukras. John was the son of Thomas Coolin and Ann Drury. I've only started working on this line so I would like to compare information.

Cooling, Coolin, Couling, Cowling (and now Cowlin) all seem to be variants.

cheers
John
Hi Sue

I believe that these are all variants of the same surname. My wife has an early relative Thomas Cooling who married Ann Drury on 29 NOV 1768 in Easingwold, Yorkshire, England (IGI: M007531). Their children were variously listed as Cooling and Coolin. One daughter Ann Coolin (but also shown as Coulin) married John Humphrey (Humphry). Later generations from her brother John's marriage to Judith Lukras seemed to have changed their name to Cowling with some children listed under both names. I'm still trying to unravel this, so any info would be appreciated.

cheers
John
Hi Gareth

I am researching the Cowlings on behalf of a friend of mine - her lines goes back to Warwick Cowling, who was born around 1805 in St Endellion. I can't locate a christening for him online - and I live too far away unfortunately to check the original parish records. However, he appears to have had at least two brothers - Thomas who was born around 1798 and Robert born around 1807. The 1841 census, which is online, shows that nearby lived 65 year old Honor Cowling, which fits in with an earlier marriage of a Robert Cowling to Honor Bishop in St Endellion in 1790.

Have you found out any more since your original posting?

Cheers

Dave

James "Edward" Cowling--St. Louis, MO

James "Edward" Cowling was born about 1874 in England. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1896 and was living in ND in 1900 and 1910. His first wife was Margaret Sander, the daughter of Jacob Sander, born in 1884 Columbia, IL. Their children included: Caroline b. abt. 1904, Albert b. abt. 1906, Florence b. abt. 1908, Crystal b. abt. 1910, Charles b. abt. 1911, Loretta b. abt. 1913, and Violet b. abt. 1915. Margaret died in 1919.

James "Edward" Cowling later married Dora Matilda whose maiden name was Pate. She lived from 1871-1943. I'm especially interested in learning more about Dora. I think she connects with one of my lines.

After Dora's death, he married Elizabeth Shirkey sp?. He died in 1951 in St. Louis, MO.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who knows this family.

I have found William Henry's (and therefore Lewis's also) birth-date on a passport application. This record can be found at Ancestry.com.

William H. COWLING, miner, born Nov 26, 1868, Cornwall, to William COWLING, deceased, born Cornwall, was issued a passport on May 19, 1920, so that he could visit family in England. The passport was sent to William H. COWLING at 627 Empire St., Ishpeming MI. His identification was verified by John Gray of Cliffs Iron Company, Ishpeming, who had known him for 25 years.

William Henry COWLING [1868], son of Susan EBBETT [1842]
I believe I can clear up some confusion about this man's birth and siblings--a family that moved from Cornwall to Ishpeming, Marquette, MI.

The 1910 census, Ishpeming MI, lists him as Henry COWLING, age 40, miner of iron ore, born in England, wife Esther. In his household is listed Susan, mother, age 66, born in England, and also his brother Charles, age 39.

The 1900 census, Ishpeming, lists him as William H. COWLING, age 30, born Nov 1869, England, wife Esther. Above him on the same census page is a listing for Susan COLLING, head, widow, age 56, born Mar 184? in England--7 of her 10 children were living in 1900. In her household were son Charlie 26, daughter Emily 19, and son John 16. All were born in England, immigrated 1900. [Notice that their father was dead by 1900.]

The census reports for 1920 and 1930 list unmarried brothers Charles and John in the household of William H. COWLING, Ishpeming.

Looking at the census reports from Cornwall for William COWLING/COWLIN and Susan, one can draw up a list of their children:
Jane c1867,
William H and Lewis (twins)c1869,
Charles c1872,
George c1875,
Emily c1881, and
John c1883.
This family matches with the two households in Ishpeming. Willima Henry's twin Lewis was also in Ishpeming in 1900, 1910, and 1920.

The 1871 census lists the age of the twins as 2 years.

William Henry COWLING and Louis (Lewis) COWLING were christened 3 Jan 1869 in St. Gerrans, sons of William COWLING and Susan--from parish records as seen on IGI, www.familysearch.org. They appear on the December quarter of birth registrations for 1868, Truro district, on FreeBMD. While their ages seem to vary inconsistently from year to year on the records, they must have been born in Nov. 1868.

The following posting of marriages in the parish of Gerrans, Cornwall, indicates that William COWLING, labourer and widower age 35, son of Samuel COWLING (farmer), married on Dec 25 1867 in Gerrans to Susan EBBETT, spinster age 26, daughter of William EBBETT (Coast Guardsman).

http://www.rootsweb.com/~enggerop/marriages_post1837B.htm

Susanna Rebecca EBBETT was the daughter of William Wilkins EBBETT, Coast Gaurdsman, and his first wife Sarah Maria (nee BEST, to the best of our knowledge). She was born Mar 18, 1842 (from family records) and christened 8 May 1842, according to parish records for St. Agnes near Truro as seen on the IGI at www.familysearch.org, daughter of William and Sarah Maria IBBELL (that must have been read from a faded page.)

On the 1871 census, you can see her in Gerrans as Susan COWLIN age 29 born St. Agnes, the wife of William COWLIN, agr. lab. age 40 born Wadebridge, along with the two twins, William and Lewis age 2 born in Gerrans. The Jane E. listed is not a child from this marriage. I will post a note about her under her own name, Jane EBBETT [1867].

Tying it all together, the 1881 census lists the family as William COWLING 50, Susannah 38 (St. Agnes), William H. 13, Lewis 13, Charles 9, and George 6, and in 1891 as William and Susan COWLIN, they have Emily 10 and John 8.

Emily married Richard SMITH, 10 Feb 1906, Silver Bow Montana (from IGI). I do not know what happened to George.

The Illinois State Database shows that a Mrs. Sarah (Crowling - SP) Albin married in 1885 to a Charles W. Lee after a short marriage to John Goodbourn and D. Albin. Her date of birth is ca 1857 and John's is 1852. The only two marriages for a Sarah Cowling in the Illinois State Database are to D. Albin (1870 - Wabash County, Illinois) and John Goodbourne(1876 - Edwards County, IL). I can find no listing for an Ada, but an Ida Albin married a Wm. Duckworth in Macon County, Illinois and possibly an L. Ward after that. The residence in the 1900 census was Champaign, Illinois. Sarah A. Cowling would have been the daughter of Edward and Sarah Cowling. The only other Sarah Cowling would have been only age 17 in the 1880 census which would make her a young bride...and why would the Sarah I mention have the name Albin? I believe it was the other Sarah that married a John Goodbourn possibly. There is a Sarah Ellis living with William and Nancy Cowling in Coffee, Wabash County, Illinois. Her date of birth is listed as 1863...I think it is a misprint and should be 1868. The other two children in the household are younger and listed as Cowlings. I am only surmising that she was possibly the daughter by a previous marriage of Mrs. Cowling's and Sarah Ellis changed her name to Sarah Cowling.

Sorry, it has taken so long to reply to your query. I was in a hospice for three years and am now in assisted living...just getting back into the saddle of genealogy. I don't know where you live, but I am unfamiliar with the name, Albin. Naturally, much of the Kershaws, Spencers, Michaels and Cowlings lived near Albion and Mt. Carmel, Illinois. I will check and see what I can find for Sarah or her children, Ada and Ida. What is your resource that Sarah was a prostitute?

I am also trying to research the Cowling line.
I have got as far back as the ellusive Warwick Cowling to get stuck - with such a distinctive name it should be easy.

I know that Warwick was born about 1795 - according to the 1851 Census. There he gave his birthplace as St Endellion.

There is only one Cowling family in St Endellion at that time. Robert Cowling married Honor Bishop on 27-12-1794. There ae chistening records for Thomas 31-5-1795, Honor 5-8-1810, Catharine 9-8-1796, Mary 10-2-1799, Ann 17-4-1808 and Robert 20-5-1804 but no Warwcik.

In the 1841 and 1851 Censuses Honor is living as the mother-in-law to Thomas Martin with his wife Jane (born c1816 - is jane another child of Robert and Honor?). Interestingly Thomas and Jane have a son called Warwick (named after an uncle?)

It is all very suggestive that Warwick's parents were Robert and Honor - but there is no proof!

Parentage of Matilda J. Cowling born 1882 MI married to Thomas Hosking

I am trying to determine the parents of Matilda Cowling (1882 MI - 1961 MI) who married Thomas Hosking (1875 MI- 1961 MI)I think her father may have been William Cowling born March 1842 in England, who immigrated to Michigan in about 1867. He is listed in the 1900 census Michigan, Dickinson Co. Iron Mountain Ward 4 Dist 60 with wife Mary born April 1840 England and daughter Christine October 1884 MI and daughter Kate Dec. 1885 MI. In 1910 William, wife Mary and daughter Christine with husband William Hodgson are listed in Michigan, Dickinson, Iron Mt. Ward 4 Dist. 65. (I believe daughter Kate married John C. Crago). William and Mary list their marriage as being the 2nd for both and that they have been married for 16 years. Therefore, wife Mary may or may not be the birth mother to Christine, Kate and Matilda (if she is indeed their sister) depending upon whether the girls are going by their birth last name or the name of their mother's 2nd husband. In the 1920 census Matilda and her husband Thomas Hosking are living in Wisconsin, Florence, Aurora Dist 76 and Mary age 76 England is listed as Thomas' mother in law. Any help on this family would be appreciated.
