Cowlishaw family

I am researching my family tree. My Great Grandfather was Samuel Cowlishaw b. 1867. The birth certificate state that his parents were WILLIAM Cowlishaw and Ann Cowlishaw, late Durn, formerly Sharp(e). His brother was Henry Cowlishaw b. 1863. Henry's birth certificate states his parents as SAMUEL Cowlishaw and Ann Cowlishaw, late Durn, formerly Sharp(e) but his marriage certificate states his father's name was WILLIAM Cowlishaw (Samuels marriage certificate also states William as his father's name). William married Ann Durn (widow) in 1863. Did William also use the name Samuel? If anyone has any links to this tree or is able to shed light on why William may have also used the name Samuel I would be glad to hear from you.

Hi there,
I fell across your letter when searching for Walter Mappin...Anyway..getting way-laid (as you do) here I am...
Johnathan Mappin + Sarah Dalton (m 1760)...amongst thier 12 children =Joseph Mappin + Hannah Newton (m 1786) amongst thier 7 children John Newton Mappin I believe this lineage was the founders of Mappin and Webb. He left also left paintings which started the Mappin art gallery too.
I am connected to this tree via my gr grandad who was a Beck. My Gr Grandmother was a Howe and her mother was a Mappin 1865...from another side of the Mappin branch, but still connected.

It's been so long since your posting I suppose you have found a lot more information...but I felt the need to write...hope you don't mind?
I would be grateful for any information you feel that you may like to share..and visa versa...the tree is very interesting.
Names in themselves are all so interesting, as an introduction to Newton suddenly appears...but why only give one child the Newton name?
The same with the Cowlishaw only John Yeomans Cowlishaw. Marriage to Sarah (I hadn't got Sarah's last name, now I feel I can add it. Thank you.

Children of J Y Cowlishaw + Sarah = John E Cowlishaw 1860 and Frederick Cowlishaw.
J Y Cowlishaws brother was Joe Henry Cowlishaw 1830)
Thier father was John Cowlishaw marriage to Mary Ann Mappin 1828 Sheffield York...He died 1897 Lowa..... this is a little bit of my branch..although I'm addicted..I just can't stop looking for ancesters, and adding them in...where ever they belong!
I wasn't sure where to slot this after reading the other mail......Look forward to hearing from you..
Regards mandy

I don't think that these are positive leads but in the Universal British Directory of 1791 (available on CD ROM) the entry for Sheffield gives a John Yeoman (scissor cutler) and Richard Yeoman (tanner).

There does NOT appear to be a John Yeomans (solicitor) in this directory.

These may however just be false leads but names did change slightly and Yeoman may have become plural.

Peter Cowlishaw

Hi,
I'm researching my family tree and it would appear that my GGGGrandmother might have been a Cowlishaw.
On the 1871 census my GGGrandmother (Ellen Aldred)appears on the form
as living with parents Richard and Sarah Aldred in Horsely Woodhouse Derbys as well as a few brothers and sisters and a Charles Cowlishaw, which I thought was odd as he was only 17 at the time.
After looking at a marriage record I found a match between a Richard Aldred and a Sarah Cowlishaw (b. 1831 in Horsely Woodhouse) in the right location and year. This was a year after Charles would have been born so I'm presuming he was illigitimate.
Does anyone have any info to support this?
It would be great to find out if anyone has any info on Sarah.
Thanks
I.Burton

David, I am also a David Cowlishaw and came across your post on this site. I would be interested in any information you have on your family tree as I am the son of Ray Cowlishaw, who I assume is your cousin. My mother started to research the family name some time ago, but unfortunately didn't get very far before divorcing my father!

I have 2 sons (Joshua 6 & Jack 4) and it would be great to provide them with a family history when they are older.

Boy...I am real glad to get your family background. I will try to tie these togeather. My Father was Hubert Lee and mother Marie Killingsworth. Both lived in
Ballinger Tx. His father . Charles James and mother Lourane Rogers . His father William Thomas and mother Mary Emmaline Davis, and like your father, our father was real mute in telling us his background. Willian Thomas came from England in 1869,and we have very little to no history beyond that. Peter has told my sis ,Martha Carter, that we are perhaps cousins... isn't that something? Glad to hear from you, jim

It might be the father of our John Cowlishaw who might have been born about 1800 and married in 1828, It would be better than another who was born in 1781. We are grasping at straws right now. However the John (father of our John) is listed as a traveller, what ever that means on the marriage certificate of the John Yeomans Cowlishaw, his son. He was not deceased. Did your ancestors come to the Sheffield area? What was their occupation? Was there a Titus or a Godfrey in their family in the 1880s? I would be willing to share some of the Cowlishaw stuff I have collected if you would give me more information. There could be a connection or you could find something that would help you..

If this John had a son, John born about 1800 he might be the one. The John born about 1800 would be a better age to marry in 1828 unless it was a second marriage or he was an old bachelor. We would need some more data.
Was the father in the filemaker or cutlery business? Would you be willing to give me your email address so we can more easily correspond. Are you in Australia or England or the USA? A Cowlishaw descendant, Janet Gall

Hi Peter,
Have at long last traced the family back to Cornelius and Jane Cowlishaw from Alfreton, 1734. I can track our line directly from there to the present day in NZ. After 20yrs plus of searching and heaps of help in recent times, we have success. I'm not sure how to format the info to put on the research site. Would appreciate advice .

Many thanks,
Gill Cowlishaw

My Grandfather was John Cowlishaw, born in Sheffield in 'The Wicker'. (i t'wicker we'er t'watter trickles oer t'weir). The family were master cutlers (little mesters). He broke away from the trade, joined the army and moved to Beeston, Notts., killed in France at the end of WW1. There is an entry on the War Graves site. He married Florence Hartley and they had three children. My father, Joseph Harold was the youngest (1911-1984), then his sister Florence and eldest brother John, all now deceased. John had 4 sons all still living: - Jim the eldest lives in Beeston, Norman lives in Australia, Graham still lives in Beeston I think and Raymond who was Chief Executive of Derby City Council plus a daughter, Mavis.
Can't help any further back, I'm afraid.
