John Cowper married Catherine Elizabeth Ellis in our lady of St. Nicholas & St. Anne's church in Liverpool in 1887, this church is known locally as St. nick's and it is the sailors church (st. nicholas being the patron saint of sailors) which means something to John as his father was a merchant seaman also called John Cowper who was born in Carlisle Cumberland in 1818. John married Hannah Langley in Penrith in 1848. you will find them in the 1851 census living at 26 Mann Street, Toxteth Park Liverpool Lancashire

I don't have anything to offer on the queries posted over
the past 12 years. But, I would like to get my name in the pot
as a COWPER descendant, albeit centuries back. I descend
from Margaret COWPER who married Thomas WEAVER, 28 May 1590,
at Rushbury Parish, Shropshire, UK. Their son, Samuel,
Christened at Rushbury 3 Aug 1600, was my immigrant ancestor,
arriving at Jamestown Virginia in 1621. I would like very
much to correspond with any COWPERs in the area of Shropshire
in hopes of getting a hint on Margaret's parents, etc.
[You still in Germany Graham?]
Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC patchas@triad.rr.com
I agree. The name is spelled Lucas Powell. Please pardon my poor typing.

I have had trouble tracing Philip Cowper, who was born in Hampton VA in 1716, or maybe 1723. I don't have his mother's name. His father was also Philip Cowper, born London ENG abr 1660. In 1687 he set up a distillery at Carter Creek Plantation, then at Pamarkey Plantation. His managers don't do well and the venture ended in a lawsuit in 1696.
Perhaps Philip Cowper, born 1716, had a brother John.

Philip Cowper, born 1716, probably married sisters, first Anne Roe, then Elizabeth Roe. There are many children I have not sorted out. In Dec. 1753 Philip Cowper died. His widow Elizabeth Roe Cowper married Lucas Powell in 1754. Lucas Powell's first wife was Elizabeth Edwards, daughter of John Edwards and Jane Arrington.

The Lucas Powell/Elizabeth Roe Cowper marriage created a huge family of step-children, some of whom married each other. My line is from William Powell, son of Lucas Powell and Elizabeth Edwards, who married Mary Cowper, daughter of Philip Cowper and Elizabeth Roe.

I would like to compare information with you. Let's start with the cnildren of Lucas Powell and Elizabeth Edwards. I am lmgoodwin@aol.com.

In all sources I have, your 'Lucus Powell' is spelled 'Lucas', after his mother Jane Lucas.

According to my records, it was not Elizabeth Cowper, but Elizabeth Edwards whom Lucas Powell married in 1754. Elizabeth Edwards, according to my records, died in 1774.

Lucas then remarried, this time to Elizabeth Roe (widow Cowper), on 7 April 1777.

I'm interested in learning more about this Philip Cowper. A

Do you have any sources of information you'd like to share?
If you want them, I have some detailed notes on the lives of Lucas Powell, Elizabeth Roe, and some of their immediate relatives.

I have come across the name Matthewe Cowper or Cooper as a child of Eleanor Stanhope, daughter of Sir Micheal Stanhope, born about 1550, in several family trees, yet all extra information I can find shows Eleanor only had two sons, John and Ralph.

Any extra thoughts on resources, or anyone know if Eleanor did have a son named Matthewe? This would connect an entire line of my family to France and Scandinavia. Thank you!

I went up to my grandpas and grandma's old camp in McLarens Bay. I know Marjorie or have heard of her. She is my mom's first cousin, Heather Cowper. Marjorie Brown was Floyd Cowper's cousin and Derek is my mom's third cousin. Sandra Bell is Aileen Forsberg is grandpa's sister and that is Sandra's late mother. She is my mom's cousin as well.

My great grandpa John Cowper, and Floyd Cowper built the cottages up at McLaren's Bay.

I wish I had seen your post earlier. Did you find family in Temiscaming. Your great grandfather and my grandfather were brothers. I don't know who from your side of the family is still there, but my 101 year old aunt Marjorie Cowper Brown and her son Derek are. You need to get in touch with Sandra Bell (Forsberg) she has all the info.

My grandpa was Floyd Cowper from Liverpool. He came over with my grandma, Mary Urquhart way back when from Scotland. He did have a twin brother. Floyd Cowper had 5 children, Heather Cowper, Wanda Cowper, Reid Cowper, Floyd (Jr) now deceased and Eric Urquhart (Scotland). Grandma and Grampa lived in Temiscaming and had a cottage in McLarens Bay. Grandpa worked for Tembec Mill and served in both WW. He has passed since October 31, 1985. Grandma Cowper passed 2 years ago. All other children are alive and well. I am Floyd Cowper's granddaughter. We're visiting Temiscaming this weekend.

Hi My name is John Cowper and I am tracing my family tree as well. I am Irish and we can't trace my father's family back past his grandfather. His name was Thomas Doyle Cowper of Newcastle West Co. Limerick, Ireland. We don't know where he came from, we know that in 1911 he was 48 and that he was born in 1863 where unknown. He also married Mary Anne in 1895 and she was 8 years older that him.
We have come up against a blank on the rest.
So I would appreciate any pointers that you might or anyone might have on this.

I had been searching for my sister who passed soon after she was born in my mothers situation the state had to bury her. It took until this year to locate my sisters resting place due to the fact the hospital recorded on her death certificate she was not oly a male but also married even tho she did not survive her first day. I know he was the OBGYN at Cowper clinic and Hospital in Big spring, Texas Howard county. His signature on her death certificate reads. R.B.G. Cowper, MD

Could he be part of the family you are trying to trace? It would seem that his daughter, Lucretia, aged 9 at this time is my great grandmother. Have you heard of this national school?

The 1840 census for Itawamba, Mississippi has a James Cooper and a John Cooper living close together. John could be either father or a brother.
If I were you, I'd track each of the children (1850 census shows that all the children were born in Mississippi) and see where each of them shows their father and mother being born and where the children live per each census. There is also a possibility that one of them moved to Utah and James went with them.
You will also find that the surname may be spelled: Cowpher, Cowfer or Cooper depending upon how well the census taker could spell. I found my Cowfer listed under Crawford at one point.
Hope this helps a little.
Modena

Cooper /Cowper question

I joined Ancestry.com last night & I've seen several trees that are part of my maternal "Baker" family. I saw this one:
http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/pedigree.aspx?tid=6694717&p...
There is an Elizabeth Jane Cooper who married Moses Jackson Baker. Elizabeth Jane Cooper would be my gg grandmother. As I looked it as this chart her father, my ggg grandfather's birth location was listed as Scotland & burial in Utah. In the Utah burial records he is listed as Cowper. The only record I saw on Ancestry was that he was buried in Utah. How would I find documentation that he is indeed my ggg grandfather? My family has southern roots and migrated through Arkansas & eventually settled in Texas.
It seems strange to me that everyone else seems to be located in the south & he was in Utah all alone. Also, I happen to know that the names beginning with my gg grandmother are all correct but I'm wondering how the researcher found the earlier names.
I would really like to know if he's from Scotland or not because I'm a fan of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series & I would dearly love to visit Scotland, lol!
I'm ordering FTM from BestBuy as soon as it's in stock again.
thanks, Rhoda Smith

My greatgrandfather was Thomas Couper b 12 Mar 1825 Carstairs. My grandfather was Thomas Dickson Cowper b 21 May 1867. He married my grandmother Jemima Somerville b 24 August 1871. Grandma came to Canada in 1907-08. My Dad Gavin Rennie Cowper b 10 Mar 1902 Glasgow came to Canada as a 6 year old boy in 1908. To this day our family knows nothing about my grandfather Thomas Dickson Cowper or what happened to him. If you have any information I would be very grateful.
