Clede has some family from Crittenden Co.
Did you have family that was born and raised in Carrsville, ky. My Mother was born in Crittenden County Kentucky. My grandmother and ggrandmother were all raised over there in that area(around the Carrsville area). They were Davidson's and Millikan's. Most of the people over there ended up coming to this area because of the mines, is the best I can figure out.
I have never been to Arizona but have always wanted to come out west.
I guess Bob is the only one of the family that is left around here. He does not know much about his Dads side of the family, the Gibson's. There was alot of them around Pope County years ago. Naturally he knows about the O'Neals because of his grandmother raising him.
We do live in southeastern Arizona, just outside of Willcox, which is about 35 miles from the New Mexico border on Interstate 10. We haven't been back for a visit for several years, work get in the way. I have an aunt who lives across the river in Carsville, KY. My sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Earl Gaskins, live in Golconda. My uncle, Bob Cox, lives there, too. One of my cousins, Bonitia Williamson, lives just outside of Golconda. Most of Clede's relatives are gone from that area, except for Bob I guess. The O'Neals in the Hardin County History, Bill and Lois, are his cousins. They used to come to Arizona for the winter and we would visit them up in Tempe, but they have stopped coming. We did visit them and their kids once in Wyoming.

I have known him for 50 years or so. He is friends with my husband also. Do you ever come back to this area for a visit? Where do you live at? Bob thought it was Arizona. Who is some of your family here? I was a Cowsert and I am married to an Ashford.

Yes, we know Bobby, he and Clede are cousins of some sort. It was so funny how we found him - I was researching in Pope County newspapers and came across a picture of him just having been born (it was a big deal because he was born after his mother had died) and showed it to Clede. It was an O'Neal line he had been looking for but didn't know where they had gone.

Robert had a son John Hamilton also. What you find in the Cowserts is they kept naming people the same name. I was told that brothers kept naming a son after a brother, therefore the name is repeated over and over sometimes and no Jr. or Sr. attached since it was a nephew to the one they were named after. Benjamin was also one of those names that happened on.

I guess I must have my stuff mixed up - I have John Hamilton as the son of Thomas Cowsert Jr. not as the son of Robert. I don't have anything for information on Robert's family. From the birth date of John Hamilton, it seems more likely he is the son of Thomas Jr. rather that his uncle Robert?

James Gordon Gullett was the one we were related to. He has been deceased for some time now. John Hamilton was Roberts son according to the info I have. John Hamilton married Katherine Groves whom was born in Tenn. She was suppose to have been full blooded Indian. In her picture she sure looks it. Robert was killed while deer hunting. The family never really knew if he had an accidentally or shot himself , or some other hunter accidentally shot him. According to the records Johns mother took him and moved away back to South Carolina they think and when John was grown he came back to Hardin County.
That is the records that was passed down by word of mouth on the accident.
Where do you live at? I don't really research the Cowserts that much. I do alot of trying to find something on my ggrandfather on my Mothers side, William King, he was from England and was born about 1830 died 1890. He married a Mary Brown, they had two children Lelia and William. William my grandfather is all I know anything at all about he was raised by Marys parents. When his father died, the story goes that Mary took Lelia and moved away. I know where she is buried but there is not marker. I have never been able to trace what happend to Lelia. Sure wish I could.

I have printed that info. My ggrandfather was Benajamin Filmore Cowsert orn 8-4-1856 He married Nancy Parrott on 8-1-1875 in Pope County,Il. Nancys parents were Joseph Parrott and Mattie PErry. Mattie was born 10-02-1854 and died 6-14-1934 both are buried in COwsert Cemetary in Rosiclare, Il. They had 8 children Lonnie, Susie Roxie, Alice, Geertrude, Walter, John was called Toby and William Harrison. William Harrison is my grandfather born 6-23-1882 died 10-29-57 he married Leona Pearl Dewese (she was from Pope County also) on 4-21-1903 she was born 9-30-1885 died 3-18-29 her parents was Robert Dewese mother Mint Harper.
Most records has my grandfather down as Willie that is what he was called but his name was William Harridson.
William and Leona had three sons William Harrison Jr. 11-03-1911 died 5-15-1957, Julius 09-01-1909 died 09-17-1910, and my Father Ulys Esco 02-06-1904 died 4-16-1985
I am 59 and returned to Hardin County in 1984. After my mother Rose Audrey passed away 9-16-1984 a week later we found out my father did not have long to live and needed care. So we returned to the county. Still here guess will die here. I was born at home also, the same as all of my brother and two sisters. I seen where you have the Gullett name listed we was related to the Gulletts. The one that was a lawyer his mother or grandmother one was an aunt to my dad.
I did enjoy city living while I lived away several years. There is two Ulys Cowserts so some people get confused on that.

What I have is that he was born in Ireland about 1740 and died in Hardin County, Ill. 9-6-1797. He was married to Agnes Jones. I think some of these children ws born in Ireland before he came to the USA. I have that James and Thomas Jr. were both born in Ireland. And that GVrissie was born in Chester Co. South Carolina. I don't really know, he could have been over here and then went back to get them. I don't really know. It is confusing.
I have a thing given to me that was typed uo and it states that James petition for Naturalization in South Carolina he was born in Ireland subjects to the King of Great Britain and that he emigrated in the year of 1790. and this was done on Nov. 8, 1806.
Do you think that maybe Thomas served under the King of Great Britain in the Rev. war?

Yes I still live on the farm. There is a cementary on the farm. That is the one that Thomas Cowsert form, and all of the family is buried at. John Hamilton and Katherine (Kate) Groves is buried there. When John Hamilton was a samll boy his father was killed why deer hunting and his mother took him and moved away. They think she moved back to South Carolina, but when John Hamilton was grown he moved back to Hardin County, Il. and bought the place adjoining where he lived as a child. That is the place that then became the cemetary. On this farm there is 3 or 4 places where there was homesteads at one time. Martha Cowsert Ashford is buried in the cemetary and the son also. He never married or had children. He was a big hunter tho. I am sure that they are related to my husband somehow. I have his family tree that I got froma man in Tenn. but it seems as if when we figured we should not have gotten married then the line died out due to no children or the children dying early.
I guess we lucked out. Who knows who all we are really related to.
Do you know anything about that big Cowsert family reunion they have in Texas ever so often? I know the man traced the history and I am related to them somehow.
As the old saying goes I am my own grandpa. HAHA
no it is not made out to John Hamilton Cowsert, the wife was a Cowsert. My parents bought the farm from Ulta Cowsert. It has always been sold to another family member. I don't know where to try and scan the one sheep skin deed that I have or not. I would have to get it out of the lock box. I just don't leave it laying around that is for sure.
Are you Harold's sister? We talked about the family history sometimes.
In my family a will was written on 9-17-1790 by Thomas Cowsert witnessed by Efrim McCluney, William McCluney, and John Johnston. Thomas said And lastly I do hereby Constitute and Appoint my Well Beloved Wife Agnes Cowsert with my trusty Friends John Cowsert, FVrancis Roy and James Young as my true and lawfull(there was two l's) Executors hereby revoking and disanuling all other Wills by me made and ratifying and confirming as this my Last Will and Testament. In Wistness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of September 1790. Will was probated Sept. 6, 1797 Recorded in Book A Page 342.
That is only the last chapter.
Thomas Jr. had a will recorded in Pope County.
Then in Hardin County Thomas Cowsert formed a cemetery and there is a deed for that cemetary. My family is buried in that cemetary. The farm it is on was originally land granted to the family and the wife was a Cowsert and it has been kept in the family since then. It has now been passed down from my parents to their children and I am one of them. I have one of the sheep skin deeds that it was land granted on and my brother got the other.

Hello Cowsert Cousin!

I have your grandparents in my database. Joel's parents were Oliver Cowsert and Charlotte Mooneyham. Oliver's parents were Matthew Cowsert and Nancy Willliams. Matthew's parents were Thomas Cowsert (Jr.) and Christina Caldwell. Thomas' parents were Thomas Cowsert (Sr.) and Agnes (possibly Jones, but not proved).

Thomas and Agnes have thousands of descendants and I am one of them, too.

I'm pretty sure I can put you in touch with someone else who descends from Oliver and Charlotte.
Oh, it might not be a good idea then to try to scan it. It is probably pretty fragile and it would be awful it was ruined in any way. I just wondered who the deed was made out to.

Ulta Parrott, b. about 1880, was the second wife of William Harrison Cowsert (he was the son of John Hamilton Cowsert). In the 1900 census, William, Ulta, and the five sons from William's first marriage are living right next door to the widow of John Hamilton, Catherine Cowsert and her widowed daughter Martha Ashford. Martha was married to Lee Ashford. Also living with them is Martha and Lee's son, John.

Lee is probably kin to your husband, Betty.

No, I'm not Harold's sister. My Cowserts came to California in the early 1900's. The last one to live in Illinois was my grandfather, Richard Andrew Cowsert. His father was Atwell Cowsert and his father was George Washington Cowsert, who was a son of James Cowsert and Elizabeth Hamilton, who was a son of Thomas Cowsert and his wife Agnes.

We have emailed once or twice and once we spoke by phone (I live in California).

Do you still live on the old place? Or does anyone? I understand there is a Cowsert cemetery there and John Hamilton Cowsert and his wife Catherine are buried there.

He died in South Carolina in 1797.

It was his son, Thomas Jr. who married first Christina Caldwell and second Polly McMurphy, who died in Hardin County in about 1855.

We just had this same discussion about two weeks ago, remember?

Judy

Hi Patricia,

The Thomas Cousar who served in the Rev. War is not the same man as Thomas Cowsert who married Agnes. I have investigated this Rev. War Thomas and it appears that the person claiming him as their Patriot ancestor conveniently changed the spelling after the first generation. That is, she claimed Thomas Cousar as her Patriot ancestor and then showed her relationship to his child, Grissy Cowsert (if I remember correctly).

This Thomas was not Grissy's father. There *were* Cousar family members living in the U.S. for many years prior to the Rev. War. How they might be related to our Cowserts, if they even are, is not known.

This is one of the "stories" that has made the rounds for so long that people believe it to be true.

I have three documents showing that our Cowsert arrived in the U.S. in 1790. One that Betty mentioned which is a Petition for Naturalization made by James Cowsert. The other two are sworn depositions of James and Thomas (Jr.) that they made regarding a contested election.

I believe that all of the children were born in Ireland. It appears that Grissy was the youngest and she is listed in Thomas Sr.'s will written in 1790, so she couldn't have been born in 1794.

When you mention cemetery records, can you explain more what that is? I didn't think it was known exactly where Grissy was buried, but would love to known if it has been discovered.

Unfortunately, gravestones are not the most accurate of records. It's hard for us to understand today, but back in those early years of the U.S., many people did not actually know how old they were or when they were born.

For example, I have a great uncle who everyone swore was 101 years old when he died in 1966. However, in the 1880 census, he is listed as a 1 year old baby. If he really was 101 in 1966, he would have been 15 years old in that census (and only 10 years older than his mother!).

But he has claimed an older age for so long that when he died, his descendants put his birth year as 1865. I guess he was pretty convincing!

Well, there I go rambling on. I love talking about the Cowserts!

Patricia, I would love to know your descendancy from Richard and Grissy. You can email me directly if you like at judy stevens 44 at earthlink.net. Of course, remove the spaces and change at to @.

Judy

His and Agnes marriage was in 1787 according to ancestry records.

Judy wrote: There is no record of a marriage between Thomas Cowsert and Agnes, that I am aware of. By record, I mean a copy or transcript of the marriage license or certificate or a permission to marry. There are people who have family trees on Ancestry.com who show that Thomas married Agnes Jones. That is not proof. Just saying it doesn't make it proof. It's not good practice to assume that what others have written, with no sources provided, is true.

Should I "change my mind" and agree with whatever anyone submits to a website?

Betty wrote: He served in the Revolutionary War from 8-07 to 9-18-1781.

Judy wrote: Thomas Couser served in the Revolutionary War. Were you born in this area?

Judy wrote: This question has been previously asked by you and answered by me, but here goes again: When I was born, my last name was Cowsert. That is how I am related to the Cowserts.

I'm not sure what, if anything, you are inferring when you ask where I was born, but I'll answer anyway. I was born in Tyler, Texas.

I've spent the last ten years researching my branch of the Cowserts. I have copies of birth, death, and marriage records, wills, tax lists, property, etc. I assume nothing until I have sources corroborating the fact. I try to use good genealogical techniques when it comes to researching family history. It's important to me that only correct information (proven by source records) is imparted as fact. That is the only reason I responded to your postings. I didn't do it to irritate you, but obviously that is what has happened.

I didn't mean to step on toes, but only to clarify what I thought were important issues. I will happily "change my mind" when shown proof (proof is not what someone else has written, unless it is accompanied by source documents).

Now I think I am done here. I won't respond to any more of your postings unless you happen to be posting to supply proof of your information.

Have a good day.

Judy
Just a couple of corrections:

Thomas Sr. died in Chester County, South Carolina. I have his will which was proved (after his death) in South Carolina.

Also, the Thomas who served in the Rev. War was not our Cowsert as he (Thomas) did not arrive in the U.S. until 1790 (proved by two depositions-one by James and one by Thomas and also James' Petition for Naturalization), which was after the war was over. The Thomas who did serve was a Thomas Cousar, as I recall -- he belonged to an earlier family of Irish immigrant who are probably (but not proven to be) related to our Cowserts.

Agnes' maiden name is only supposed to be Jones but not proven. We supposed she was a Jones because a Richard Jones left her land in his will. This is strong evidence but not proof as he does not refer to her as his daughter.

There is an additional child of Thomas and Agnes, as mentioned in his will: James (from whom I descend). There were 8 children living when Thomas wrote his will.

I hope that these corrections are taken in the spirit given. It's important that errors not get passed along as they soon become thought of as fact.

Thanks, Judy

Hi Betty,

I'm sure we are talking about the same will. I also have a copy of it that you can see here on my web site where I transcribed it in July of 1998:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/5842/thomas-will.h...

You can see that Thomas (Sr.) died not in Illinois but in SC (Chester County) where his will was written, then recorded, and finally probated after his death.

After Thomas died, Agnes took the children and moved to Kentucky. Most of the children later moved across the river to Illinois.

It is the son then --Thomas Jr.-- that you are referring to when you say "Thomas Cowsert formed a cemetery and there is a deed for that cemetary" etc.

No disagreement from me there. I certainly agree that son Thomas lived and then died in southern Illinois. It was only where the father Thomas died that I questioned.

How lucky you are to have all that family history, the deeds and such. Is the land deed made out to John Hamilton Cowsert? If I remember correctly that is the Cowsert you descend from. Is it possible to scan that deed? I would love to have a scanned copy of it.

Thanks,

Judy

I was born on the bluff just outside of Golconda overlooking the Ohio - delivered at home by good old Dr. Murray Brown (it seems he delivered almost everyone in the area around that time - I was born in 1950). I don't think being born there gives me a leg-up in any way over anyone else, though. My birth father lived in Golconda all his life and died there at the age of 92, my half-sister lives there now. I live in Arizona now and haven't been back for a while but I do love it there as well as across the river in Kentucky. My ancestor is Grissie Cowsert - here is some info, maybe more than you want:

1 Richard Fulkerson 1789 - 1821

.. +Gracie "Grissie" Cowsert 1794 - 1850

......... 2 James Frederick Fulkerson 1811 - 1875

............. +Priscilla Floyd 1817 - 1897

.................... 3 Richard Spencer Fulkerson 1835 -

........................ +Minerva Finney 1841 -

............................... 4 Amanda Fulkerson 1858 -

................................... +Elijah McAnnally

............................... 4 Armelia or Arminda Fulkerson 1859 -

................................... +FNU McAnnally

............................... *2nd Husband of Armelia or Arminda Fulkerson:

................................... +James Slavens

............................... 4 Americus Fulkerson 1862 -

................................... +Sarah Ann Parks 1864 -

............................... 4 James Alexander Fulkerson 1864 -

................................... +Mary Ann Brandon 1865 -

........................................... 5 Marion F.
Hi, I am collecting info on the Cowserts also. Thomas' daughter Grissy is my ancestor, she maried Richard Fulkerson. Grissy was born 31 May 1794 and died 18 Jan 1850 (I have the info from the cemetery records). Do you have records on Thomas showing when he came from Ireland and when he was born? Do you think he came to the US and then returned to Ireland with his wife and that's how Thomas Jr was born in Ireland? It just seems comfusing if he served in the Rev War in 1781 and then his son was born in Ireland in 1789.

Once I saw you family info I realized I had seen it in the Hardin County book - too much to remember who's who. The only link I have seen is who was John Hamilton Cowsert's father? It must have been Thomas Cowsert Jr., right?

I looked on the Cowsert Family Website and they say there is a reunion the 3rd week in July near Junction, TX, but they don't seem to have updated the site to indicate whether they will have one this year - the last one there is info for is 2005. They note also reunions in Indiana and Missouri, but also no recent info.

I am also researching Gulletts, my father was a Gullett.

My Fraternal Grandfather was Joel Cowsert Senior and Emma Crawford was my Grandmother. Both of my parents have been deceased for some time now and I am not in touch with many extended members of the Cowsert Family who I may be related to We were not close to many in the later years of my parents lives. As a result I am not sure who I may be related to.

Good afternoon Judy,

I am very curious as to know who your parents are so I could understand your connection to the family. My sister and I were not familiar with your name. My parents are Phillip "Wayne" and Betty Cowsert. To be honest with you I did not know what my Great Grandparents names were. Is your name Artie or is it Judy. Where did you grow up and what are the names of your siblings. I just happened on to this site last night and I am very excited to here that we have cousins out there and who they are.

Thank you,

Cathy
