I am looking for any information on Nancy Cox who married Joseph Smith. Nancy was the daughter of Charles Cox (born January 28, 1796 in Pittsylvania Co. Virginia) and Nancy Graham (born November 22,1798 in Virginia). Nancy Cox, the daughter, was born about 1928 in Lewis Co., Kentucky. I think that she had a son, Walter Cox, who was born about 1847 in Kentucky. She married a Joseph Smith (born about 1827 in Delaware) about 1849. I think that this Walter Cox may be my great-grandfather. Joseph & Nancy Smith with Walter Cox appear in the 1850 US census in Lewis County, Kentucky and in the 1860 US census in Monroe Co., Iowa. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Elsie Cox m. Charles Brown

I have inherited my grandmother's cedar chest. I have many photos (with and without names) and some hand written notes.

I know that Elsie Cox 1868-1911 was married to Charles Brown 1866-1936.

I have a photo with "Grandfather Cox" written on the back. There are also notes that say Able Cox 1825-1905 married Margaret Cox 1824-1903 and Milton Cox 1838-1921. Buried in Oak Grave Cemetery in DeWitt, NE.

I have photos of Charles Brown but no photos of Elsie Cox.

Does anyone have any information on the parents of Elsie Cox or photos they wish to share?

Haplo Group I

Hunting any Cox group with DNA from the Haplo group I. My ggggrandfather was Zachriah Cox born in 1788 in N.C. and died in Gordon Co. Georgia. He married a Grizzle ? born 1796 in N.C. and this is were I am stuck. We had my father's DNA tested and have only found one person from this haplo group on y-search, an Absolom Cox, born bet 1770-1780 and died in 1821 Posey Co. Ind. Absolom's DNA had only 12 markers, but they were exactly the same. I have a copy of the tree. Absolom's father was John Cox Sr. born about 1753 in NC, and died May 1826 in Posey, Ind. He has 7 children listed: Absolom, Jemima, Elizabeth, John "Doublehead", Furneyford, Joseph, and Johnathon. There is a big age gap between, John born 1773 and Furneyford born 1791, so I wonder if there could be more children and this could be the right family. If anyone knows anything more or is in the same haplo group and would like a copy of mine, let me know.
Thanks,
Lisa

William Heap (b.abt 1825, Plymouth, Devon) emigrated to the USA in the 1850s. His brother James was my gr-gr-granfather.
William and his wife Mary had several children and one of them Olive (b.abt 1870, NH) married John M. Cox (b.abt 1867, NH).
I have only not been able to trace any children so far.
They lived from at least 1900-30 in Laconia NH, with either Olive's mother (Mary E., b. abt 1825, Manchester, Lancs) or her sister Emma J. Cox
Posted: Tuesday, Jul 22, 2008 - 12:24:26 pm PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON.

Jan. 29, 1919 - July 18, 2008

On Friday, July 18, the life of an exceptional man, Hollis Dean Cox came to a peaceful end. The three people he loved most in his life were at his side.

Born to pioneer stock in the wheat country of Prescott, Eastern Washington, "Cox" embarked on an interesting life at an early age. A Dayton, Wash., High School graduate, he went on to Eastern Washington University, University of Utah and Washington State University. Cox served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He married Janet Johnson in Spokane in 1946, the mother of his three children, Karen, Dean and Dana. The young family moved around the country and world as Cox worked as a school administrator and superintendent.

After a long career in the education world and having touched so many lives, he and his partner and wife of forty years, Maja, settled in Sequim to experience 'retirement' twenty years ago.

Cox lived an extremely full life, he knew of our love for him, and his family rejoices in the knowledge that he was loved by so many.

Maja and the family will host an open house this Saturday, July 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at their residence at 503 Serpentine Avenue in Sequim.

Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Boulevard, Port Angeles, WA 98362 or to any liberal cause of choice.
Cox/Coxe/Cock/Cocke/Cocks/Cockes DNA Project Update June, 2005

I have updated the DNA chart for the Cox (and name variations) project. Anyone interested in looking at the chart, E-mail your address and I will send the chart to you as an attachment. I have the chart in a Word file. The chart represents 10 different Cox groups.

I am a descendant of Absalom Cox (b. 1802) and Dialtha Bird of Whitley Co., KY. Family traditions says this Absalom Cox was a son of Absalom Cox and Mary Prigmore of Jefferson Co., TN. DNA testing shows I share a common ancestor with the descendants of Solomon Cox and Naomi Hussey. But, Absalom Cox (b. 1802) of Whitley Co., KY was not a grandson of Solomon Cox and Naomi Hussey. The DNA markers for the donors are off (do not match) too many markers for Absalom Cox (m Dialtha Bird) to be a grandson of Solomon Cox (m Naomi Hussey).

Can anyone help me? I am looking for male descendants (that carries the Cox surname) from the Stephen Cox/Mary Robertson line of Whitley Co., KY. Also, a male descendant (that carries the Cox surname) from the Absalom Cox line of Posey Co., IN and Absalom Cox (m Judith W. Moore) line of Smith Co., TN.

Anyone interested in participating in the Cox/Coxe/Cock/Cocke/Cocks/Cockes DNA Project, please contact me at hudgo@medt.com.

Thank you,
Mary Lou Hudson
Cox/Coxe/Cock/Cocke/Cocks/Cockes DNA Project Admin.
hudgo@medt.com

John E. Cox, Henderson County, NC

I've been researching my GGrands trying to figure out who their parents were and finally found one whom I think is my GGrandmother's parents. I'm speculating and my family thinks I'm crazy for digging up bones so I'm hoping someone on the list wants to help me figure this out. I've sent for my GGrands death certificates hoping they will give the parents names, but who knows and that will take weeks to get back. So, here goes.

In the 1860 Census for Henderson County, Edneyville, enumerated on 7/9/1860, there is a John E. Cox, age 39, wife Elizabeth, age 36, daughter Matilda E., age 14, sons Joseph M., age 13, and Valentine, age 4, daughter Sarah, age 3/12, whom I believe is my GGrandmother. There is also a Sudie or Susie Mosell, can't make out the age, living with them.

My GGrandmother, Sarah Dicey Minerva Cox, was born April 15, 1860, so the age fits. She and my GGrandfather Benjamin Franklin P. Cox, were first cousins with the same surname.

I've also found John E. Cox in the 1840 census, Henderson County, age 15-20, living alone, and in the 1850 census, same county, John Cox, age 30, Caroline Cox, age 28, Willis Cox, age 20, William Cox, age 10, a daughter whose first name I can't make out, age 2 or 12, can't make that out either, and a Susie or Sudie Mosell, living with them.

I'm assuming the 1850 John would be the same as the 1860 John because of the Mosell female. Then John disappears in the 1870 Census. I pick up my GGrandfather Benjamin, age 21, and his wife Sarah, age 19, in the 1880 Census either living with or beside Valentine Cox, whom I'm hoping is her brother. Also there is a Hart family listed right before Valentine Cox's entry and my GGrandfather's brother, Jessie, married a Hart.

Anyone care to speculate with me to pass away the time until the death certificates get back?

Pat Webster
http://beaty-cox.org

Phillip and Althea Cox - KY to Jackson County, IL

Hi,

Have just begun my husband's COX line and this is what I've got so far.

Phillip and Althea Cox. Phillip (8/24/1818 - 1/17/1875) and Althea (5/27/1831 - ?) moved from unknown county, KY to Jackson County, IL in 1858, where Phillip patented 40 acres of land.

On the 1860 census (De Soto P.O., Jackson County, IL), the family was listed as follows:

Phillip, 42, M, Farmer, 1000 real estate, 200 personal, b. KY
Althea, 42, F, b. KY
Mary, 21, F, b. KY
Nancy, 17, F, b. KY
Nelson (Wilson?), 17, M, b. KY
George (ours), 15, M, b. KY
Amanda, 13, F, b. KY
Sarah, 8, F, b. IL
William, 5, M, b. IL
Susan, 4, F., b. IL

This puts the family moving to Illinois between the years 1847 and 1852.

If anyone is on this trail, I'd appreciate an email!

Campbell/Cox Mystery, Florida Jane, Hunt County Texas

In researching my wife's Cox line in Hunt and Hopkins Counties, Texas, we've come across a mystery. In the 1860 census there is a child, Florida Jane Campbell, living with Frederick and Mary (Marshall) Cox. Florida Jane Campbell would have been born around 1852. Fred and Mary were married around 1856. Some trees have Florida Jane listed as the first Cox child but according to the census, she is a Campbell. Also, Fred Cox's obit mentions "8 children, 6 of whom are still living." Florida Jane would make 9 children. Did Mary Marshall have a prior marriage (or child)? Did they take in an orphan? Florida Jane is an unusual name. Fred Cox was born and raised in England, all the Cox children have traditional English names, my wife descends from their daughter Elizabeth, "Lizzie" in some records. Would love any help in trying to solve this mystery. Thank you.
