Hi everyone I'm trying to find my relatives and I have hit a brick wall...I'm looking for information on African American Spencer's from the Terrell County Georgia area (Sasser,Dawson,Albany etc..) So far I can only go back as far as my great-grandfather Tobe Spencer who married Carrie. He was a share cropper and they had 6 children Dessie Mae,Tobie,Nellie(my grandmother),Hezekiah,Ceola, and Isom. I think there was also another brother named James that died young. Although my grandmother is still living she is 105 and is having a hard time remembering details from so long ago and my father who was born and raised on that farm has passed away.Tobe had to have parents and Carrie had to have a surname so if any of them sound familiar contact me PLEASE!!!!

One correction to my previous post. Willie G Coxwell's father was William James Washington Coxwell, George T was her gf. According to family history he was a blacksmith who moved to Calhoun Co FL from southern GA. His parents were James Richard Coxwell and Mary Raleigh (or Raley). I have heard the previous generation of Coxwell's came from Wales.

I've visited George T Coxwell's grave many times in the Coxwell Plot, from memory it is north of Altha, turn east at the Coop following the sign to Mt Olive cemetary.
Coxwells

Dear Linda; I am not descended form Coxwell at all. Just researching for niece. Her folks are from Wayne Co. Ms. but came from Clarke, Al. I have virtually nothing on them. We know from her Grandfather before he passed on, actually ggrandfather, that he was related to Green. His name was Daniel Hezekiah Coxwell. We called him Mr. Hezikiah. Her gfather is still living, but he wouldnt tell me anything, because her parents are divorced now. Guess they thought I shouldnt be looking at their family. I do know the family names are: Daniel, edward, Wesley, Robert, Thomas, and I think Frank? Good bet that Green berry is her line, because his children married the Pettis boys, which are my direct line. So Mr.H, used to joke that my sister married her own cousin. Which isnt quite true because the Pettis boys had all their children by previous wives. I saw a cousin named J. Long mentioned? The Longs are related to the Dyess' which married the Pettis' also. It shure is a SMALL world!!! Any help would be appreciated. Right now, I'm just following the postings to get some leads for her. She (my niece) told me she had back to Greenberry, somehow. But I dont think she documents this. She is only 17. I THINK Brewer is tied in through her ggrandfather's marriage. Does that help? He would have been born about turn of century. This is Daniel(?)Hezikiah. Thanks for any imput! c.sullivan

Wow! that was fast and YES this is the line, I know it is because I reconize the names from talking to Mr. Hezikiah before he died. Yes the S.S. index is him also. I tried to post to Sid earlier, but server was down. Will try again. Also, I found a Brewer who married Coxwell. She was listed as Bennie Brewer. Could this have been Trinnie? my niece is named Trinnie for a Brewer ancester a couple of generations back. I sure appreciate yall helping me. The reason I havent gotten up with my niece about this is because her mother, my sis, is recent dianosed terminal cancer. She asked me to find what I could; but to ask my niece right now while her mother is so sick...not good. Plus, she is working full time to help pay bills. No other income. My niece also is student with highest honors program. TOO MUCH to deal with at her age. Has the voice of an angel, too. Do any other Coxwell's have musical background? My niece took second in state solo competion this year, and third last year. She also has been doing some acting and modeling. Anyway, thanks so much for helping. I will call her this weekend to see what else she knows. IF she isnt working. I sincerely appreciate your efforts. Again, thank you. c. sullivan.

Dear Gene: youre probably right, your dad probably was cousin to Mr. Hezikiah. His line was Greenberry>Henry J.>James W.>daniel hezikiah. I believe he does have son named gene, and the age would be correct for time frame (i.e.) 1950's. What did you mean by greenberry 2? It has been so long since I have had computer up that I need to refresh my notes. have many on paper that never got transferred to computer records. Badly need to play catch-up! Sure would appreciate any info on any line of coxwells as I am researching for my niece. She graduates this year and I would like to give her this as complete as possible. Thanx.

Coxwell History

I live in Montana & know nothing of my family history as far as Coxwells go other than a few snippets here & there. My dad was born in Feb 1943 a month after his dad was killed in a b-24 crash in Hawaii in January 1943. My dad's name is Jonathan E. Coxwell, as was his Dad's. His dad was known as Gene, as his middle name was Eugene. He was a Major in the Army Air Corps, and was a B-24 Pilot. He had been staioned in Panama for a while prior to Hawaii. He was Married to Celia Janet Marvin, known as Janet, & after his death remarried to Dale A. Cameron who was a rancher out of Martinsdale, Mt. Any info anyone could provide into this branch of the Coxwell family history would be appreciated. Sorry, but this is all the info I know right now. Thanks, Mark

I've been doing the census the old-fashioned way--going to the DAR library and archives. DAR has only down to 1900 census, so I'll have to go to the archives for 1910 and 1920 to find Henry. There are several possibilities for his father. Since the census was taken in early 1900, he's not found in a family. I think he will probably connect to my Mitchell Coxwell line, but I'll need census info to get a place to start.

I had two possibilities for his father, based on marriages in Terrell Co. in the 1880s:

1. Edward B Coxwell md. Levie McLendon, 10 Aug 1887.
2. W. B. Coxwell married S. J. McLendon, 4 Dec 1889.

I hadn't found the grooms in the 1880 SOUNDEX (C240 for Coxwell), though they should have been under 10 years of age and with a family). I just discovered yesterday that many of the Glascock Co. Coxwells were enumerated as "Coxville", which is SOUNDEX C214, so I'll have to go page by page through the census to find Edward and W. B. I assume they are brothers, and that the McLendon brides are sisters. There were a number of McLendons in Terrell Co. Nancy Ann Eliza Coxwell Riley married Martin McLendon in 1868; it was the second marriage for both.

Here's what I have for Edward off the 1900 SOUNDEX card:

Terrell Co., #909 Chickassawatchee Dist., ED 76, p. 24, line 55.
Coxwell, Edward, head, b. Feb 1863, age 37, GA
Coxwell, Levie, wife, b. Oct 1867, age 32, GA
Coxwell, Willie, daughter, b. Nov 1888, 11, GA
Coxwell, Joe M, son, b. Oct 1890, age 9, GA
Coxwell, Lester R, son, b. July 1892, age 2, GA
Coxwell, Mamie E, daughter, b. Aug 1895, age 4, GA
Coxwell, Lucy I, daughter, b. Nov 1898, age 2, GA
Coxwell, Henry E, son, b. May 1900, age 1/12, GA

DUHHH, How did I miss this? The writing is hard to read; it's probably Henry J, not Henry E.

I think this is W. B. and S J.:

Lee Co., Palmyra, ED 18, p. 7, line 98
Coxwell, William B, head, b. June 1865, age 35, GA
Coxwell, Sallie, wife, b. May 1870, age 30, GA
Coxwell, Philip C, son, b. June 1890, age 10, GA
Coxwell, Allie P, daughter, b. May 1892, age 8, GA
If you are going to the courthouse, you might see if they have death records for Green and Emily. Or perhaps the local historical society has old newspaper clippings that might have obituaries. Since Green was a CSA veteran, he probably rated an obit. Sidney Coxwell has been to the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, near Jackson, where Green, Emily and others are buried. Also, maybe the local hist. soc. would have info on how to find his widow's pension application. Perhaps you all could get together and combine research efforts.

I found the reference on Green B Coxwell in the Civil War:
Emily Coxwell, widow of G. B., Pvt. Co. K, 57 Regt., who died
12/23/1897, PO Tallahatta. #2533, in "Clarke Co. Alabama Records
1814-1885" p. 86.
According to Sidney Coxwell, Green and Emily are buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Jackson, Clarke Co. Green B Coxwell, born 6 Nov 1827, died 23 Dec 1897. Emily (Rowland) Coxwell, born 8 June 1826, died 6 Jul 1909. There are other Coxwells in this cemetery. I also heard from a descendant of Mary Elizabeth Coxwell and Adeline Coxwell, children of Green and Emily.
