Surnames: Coy
My grandfather was Mike Coy, son of Henry Coy, son of Daniel and Susan Coy. Daniel Coy died February 21, 1872, and is buried in the graveyard located on the old Coy farm in the southwest part of Schuyler County, MO. Susan Coy died August 4, 1898, and is buried in the old Crossroads Cemetery, Portia, Arkansas.
Their children included Peter M., Michael John, Daniel Skinner, Samuel, Henry, Elizabeth Ann [married 1. William Cooper, 2. ?Gardner]; Susan E [Married Robert H. Stokesberry], and Emily M. [Married Jeremiah Ralston.
This is information gathered some 20 years ago by John H. McDaniel, a grandson of Henry Coy's. He says "I have concluded that Henry Coy's maternal grandfather (Susan's father) was the many-time-married Peter Minnick, who was born about 1790. Henry Coy enlisted in the Union Army from Schuyler County, MO. His brothers Peter M. and John also enlisted and neither survived. Henry was crippled by lightning while lying on the gorund in camp with two companions at Marietta, GA, on July 17, 1864."
On November 10, 1859, at Martinstown, Putnam County, MO, Henry Coy married Matilda Hickman, daughter of John P. and Debora (Stout) Hickman. Their children were Susie (Coy) Mercer, (wife of Professonr John Swank Mercer); William Coy and John Samuel Coy. Matilda died about 1866 and is buried in Hatfield Cemetery, Putnam County, in an unmarked grave.
Henry Coy remarried April 16, 1867 to Mary E. Stokes in Schuyler County, MO. They moved to Taney County sometime after 1880. By this marriage were born two daughters and five sons -- Charlie, Ike, Mike [my maternal grandfather], Sike, Frank; Julia L. (married George Beeler), Jenny (married Thomas Silvey.) Jennie was murdered by an itinerant suitor. Taney history reveals that he was later found where he had bent over a sapling and hung himself.
Henry Coy was divorced at Forsyth, MO, on November 7, 1889, by his second wife. Three days later, on November 10, 1889, he married Rachel Cox of Taney County in Redlands, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. By this marriage he had two children. Molly married 1.? Garver, 2? 3. George Beeler, [widower of her half-sister Julia A.]; and Dolly, married A. L. Kenyon.
Henry Coy died at the home of his daughter Dolly Kenyon at Republic, MO on October 26, 1928 and is buried in the Johnson cemetery east of Elida, MO. Many of his descendants still live in the White River area of the Ozarks, in Missouri and Arkansas.
That's the end of Mr. McDaniel's information. For many years this branch of the Coy family held an annual Memorial Day reunion at Forsyth, but it is no longer being held.
I hope this helps you with your search.
