Hi Ciaran,

We met many years ago both in Derryhoyle and in Kilchreest. I think you might know my brother Shane a bit better than me. He went to UCG while you were there. I was down to see your parents a few months back with my Dad Mike. We met Anthony and some of the Fahys. I'm currently doing a lot of family research and coming across a lot of interesting facts. I hadn't realised that you were interested in the Family tree although a name like Coy always generates interest. Let me know if you want to know more about what I have found out so far.

Regards
Ronan

Hi Joe -

Thanks! That's my Henry Coye the jeweller! "Tisbury" (not Tisburg - that's a misspelling) is effectively the same town as Vineyard Haven.

I've seen that census info, but it's nice to have his grandparents and great-grandparents. If you run into any additional info on this guy, please let me know!

I'll be posted what I know of him sooner or later at: http://www.vineyard.net/vineyard/history/mainst/six/

Thanks again -

Chris

You wrote:
>Still looking for info on Henry? I was looking for some of my
>Coy/Coye relatives and found Henry in the 1900 census in
>Tisburg, Dukes County, MA. He was living with his wife Carla
>and it looked like she was 52 and he was 71. They had never
>had children and she was from Connecticut. I have Henry as
>the son of Orin Coy and Bathsheba Rockwood, Orin (I've also
>seen Oren) the son of Lemuel Coy and Sarah Moffatt and
>Lemuel the son of Stephen Coy and Anna Bissell. I'm related to
>Stephen and Anna through one of their other sons-Vine Coy.
Hi,
I came across your posting and saw your interest in the Coye family name. The Coye family from Derryhoyle is actually related to me but our names are now spelt slightly differently. My name is Ronan Coy and I am from Kilchreest just a few miles from Derryhoyle. My Father used to spell his name Coye but we have all been christened with Coy (although my birth certificate says Coye). The name seems to have changed randomly during the past.

Their is a family of Coye's in Derryhoyle currently and Joe Coye is the father. Their are two sons Ciaran and Colga that i know off. My Father Michael Coy(e) is 4th cousin to Joe Coye. That makes me 5th cousin to Ciaran and Colga. When we were children we did visit each others houses on a number of occasions and their was a bond between the families as the name is quite rare. There was a captain Pat Coye from Derryhoyle who was a volunteer during the Civil war. He died in 1923 and was buried in Kilchreest cemetry. See the link http://homepage.eircom.net/~clostoken/coye.html

My father probably has more information on the exact realtionship between the families if you are interested.

Regards
Ronan Coy(e)
Henry W. Coye (1829-1917), son of Orin Coy + Bathsheba Rockwood

I am searching for any info on Henry W. Coy(e).

Henry W. Coye (1829-1917) was born in Northfield or Monson, Mass. (records vary), the son of Orin Coy and Bathsheba Rockwood. He moved to Rockville, Conn. in 1849, and married Carla Elizabeth Holton (c.1845-6 – after 1920). She was born in Vernon, Conn., the daughter of Roger Wolcott Holton and Mary Smith. In August 1862 Coye, by then living in Vernon, enlisted in the 25th Connecticut Infantry, Company B, and eventually rose to the rank of Sergeant.

Around the summer 1873, Coye opened a watch and jewelry store on Martha’s Vineyard, evidently in Cottage City. By 1887 he was celebrating his fourteenth season on Martha’s Vineyard in the Gazette ads for his Cottage City store.

He opened a branch jewelry store in Vineyard Haven in 1887, and built a new store in that town in 1891, which he ran until 1903, when he sold to L. Ernest Briggs. He advertised watches and watch repair, diamonds, jewelry, optical goods, clocks, and silverware. He was still listed in the Rockville and Vernon, Conn. Directories as late as 1889.

He died in Vineyard Haven, Mass.

Any help appreciated!

C. Baer
