Nancy - I wonder if you contacted me regarding the Coyne family. There were 5 Coyne brothers who were born and raised in Chicago.

Life gets in the way, so have not been on Ancestry for some time! Please let me know either way. Thanks.

Coyne From Westmeath to Mimico A Family Histoy

I have a genealogy book written in 1996 by Patricia Coyne-Stoppard titled From Westmeath to Mimico A Family History. It covers 4 family names Coyne, Burtenshaw, White, Dardis. I've tried to find people who might be trying to research these families but have had no luck. I hate to just throw it out when someone has put so much work into it. Anyways it is posted on the Toronto kijiji and craigslist sites, just search book title under books category. If you want more info contact me through those sites.

Hi,

My name is Andrew Coyne and I am 15 years old. I am researching Pfc William Coyne Jnr who was killed at Pearl Harbor during the attack on Hickam Field. He was posted to the 42nd Bombardment Squadron, 11th Bomb Group, which was formed on the 1st February 1940. He was born on the 5th July 1921 and was only 20 when he died. His parents where William and Pearl (nee Manley) Coyne who lived in Wyandotte County, Kansas. I am interested because my grandfather was John Joseph Coyne who came to England from Salruck, Renvyle, Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland in 1943. I never knew my grandfather as he died before I was born so the Coyne side of our family is a mystery.

Many thanks to anyone who can help, you can contact me direct at pandmcoyne@hotmail.co.uk

Andrew Coyne, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England.

Hello Angela,
After years of intermittent searching, your husband David is the first living direct descendant of Thomas & Mary GILLIGAN of Mosgiel I've been able to locate !

I am particularly interested in any information you may have re Thomas GILLIGAN's parents - Michael GILLIGAN and Mary (nee COYNE) of Lowtown, near Mullingar, Co. Westmeath -because they were the parents of my grandmother Jane LAYBURN (nee GILLIGAN).

I hold copies of Thomas and Mary GILLIGAN's Death Certificate's (Mosgiel,NZ) and photos of my 2011 visit to the GILLIGAN family grave in Southern Cemetery, Dunedin that includes their children Mary Elizabeth(aka Cissie)d1910, son Peter Murray GILLIGAN d1920 and James GILLIGAN d1926.

I also have photos taken about 60 years ago of the derelict two storey Lowtown Manor (aka Lowtown House)in Co.Westmeath where Michael & Mary GILLIGAN lived with their children in the Gatehouse. Michael was the Gardener. I visited the Manor site about 12 years ago but unfortunately it has been completely demolished and all that remains is a section of the boundary wall.

I am more than happy to exchange information.

Wilf Layburn (Wellington NZ)

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring with this Coyne search.

I am searching for a solid connection between Bridget Coyne Connell and her parents / origins. Bridget was born in 1871 in Ireland. She came to the US in 1882 and settled in the Marcellus / Syracuse area. Her siblings included Kate, Nora (Honora?), Michael, and Martin. She married Phillip Connell in 1892. They had six children Francis, Barbara, Matthew, John, Phillip, and Robert.

If anyone has an information on this branch of the Coyne family, please contact me.
Hi, Grace, Good to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about your sister. I lost my brother to cancer in 2008, and my husband--also to cancer--in 2010. So I understand. Actually, I haven't done much on my Coyne ancestors recently, but I did try to do some research on your mother, but with not success. On the Corbit family, I would need to know more. I am not certain--are you mainly into genealogy, or mainly into locating info on your birth mother?
Peggy

Am totally at a stand still looking for the family of William Patrick Coyne. He was born Dec 11 1848 supposedly in Illinois. However, I am thinking he was in an orpahange in St Louis. I know he ran away and registerd for the war even though underage. Went and worked on the railroad in Arizona and met and married martha Ellen Van Horn. He usually went by the name of Patrick Coyne. he was killed in a train wreck on April 28 1905

I am talking about the Coynes from the Lettermore area of Galway. The descendants of these Coynes came to America and settled in Bellaire OH, Pittsburgh, PA, Boston area. Some went to Maine, but I don't know if the line is the same.It appears from the Family Finder test on Family Tree DNA that I am related to this Thomas William Coyne who ended up in Maine.

I am looking for a Coyne family Thomas & Margaret somewhere in the Killosolan Parish area in 1825. Their daughter, Mary, came to the US, a widow, and settled in NJ.

That may be the same family I'm looking for. My Gr.Grandma Anna Quinn, had a sister Sarah(m.John Coyne), and Katherine, or Aunt Kate as my Dad and Aunt Judy called her, never married and was a housekeeper at St. Columbkille in Parma. Both my dad and Aunt Judy, indicate that their parents, never really talked much about the family history. So, I'm sensing the same thing that there was a problem with the Sherlock or Quinn's. Here's hoping I'll find Anna, Katherine and Sarah's parents names.

Hi Mary,

I remember your father. Uncle Larry and two of your brothers came over to Ellen's house for a small reunion when we made a visit in the summer of 1974. We were living in Wallace, North Carolina at the time and I had just graduated from high school. We were on our way to Iowa for my mothers' parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration and we stopped in Joliet to visit. That must have been about a year before your father died. So many years ago but I can see him as if it was yesterday. I am now living in San Antonio, TX, my brother Mike is still in NYC and my other brother Tim is in California. Thanks for the post.

Hi Mary

My name is Mary also. My dad and your dad were brothers. I emailed your brother a few years ago, it was nice to learn that he and my brother have the same name. You dad died less than a year after my dad. I only met him once at my dads funeral but I remember him as being very nice.

Geoff, I've just picked up on your 29 September 2009 message!

Thomas GILLIGAN (23) a farm labourer from Co.Westmeath travelled to New Zealand 1874 on the ship "Otago' with his wife Mary (22).
Thomas was Jane GILLIGAN's brother. She emigrated to NZ 1874 on the same ship "Otago".

Jane GILLIGAN was my grandmother. Her sister Eliza GILLIGAN emigrated to New Zealand 1885 on the ship "Tongariro". She was a spinster all her life and died at Timaru 21 July 1926. She is buried with her sister Jane (and John) LAYBURN.

Thomas GILLIGAN died aged 41 at Mosgiel on 1 February 1889 leaving nine children - 8 sons and 1 daughter. (The details on Thomas's Death Certificate were supplied by his brother Patrick GILLIGAN of North East Valley, Dunedin).
Thomas GILLIGAN's widow Mary (nee Murray) died 31 May 1917 at her residence, Ayr Street, Mosgiel.

Geoff, are you related to the GILLIGAN family of Lowtown near Kinnegad in Co. Westmeath (Ireland) ???

T.W. (Wilf) Layburn
Wellington. New Zealand

Hi all. I started the original COYNE thread ages ago. Then I posted the URL that was subsequently deleted. Sorry! Probably like you, I post to multiple sites / boards and I don't always remember the rules for each.

Not a big issue.

Back to the elusive COYNE families from Clifden - keep posting the info you have - one day, we might find some connections. Given the scarcity of records available to us from this area in the early 1800s, we are going to have to rely on each other to establish the links between the families.

The only reason I know details about my own gg grandfather John Joseph COYNE born c1834 and his older brother Thomas COYNE born c1820 were found on their convict records and their West Australian death certificates. Their parents were Martin COYNE and Mary WALSH; Martin was a farmer, from Clifden, Co Galway.

Unfortunately, as I learned when I visited the area in Jan 2007, Clifden refers to quite a large area, so when someone said they were from Clifden, it could have meant any number of smaller parishes in the district.

Also - as I was told many times, COYNE was a very common name in this area - and in nearby County Mayo.

So - in summary:
Use whatever information - or best guesses - you may have; add to your ancestry tree and keep sharing the info here. Sometimes, even information that doesn't fit is useful - because at least it rules out a certain line of enquiry.

Attached (I hope) is a photo of my gg gf John Joseph COYNE.

Good luck
Colleen

Watson Family Website - http://watsongenealogy.tribalpages.com/

Hi to SusanTMason

Are you asking about my Thomas COYNE, son of Martin COYNE & Mary WALSH of Clifden? (Not sure which previous message you were referring to).

If so - Yes, we believe our Thomas COYNE was married. As a convict he sought permission for a Biddie COYNE of Clifden to travel to Western Australia (convicts were allowed to do this). However, for whatever reason, Biddie did not make the trip. Thomas remained a bachelor until much later in life - perhaps thinking that somewhere Biddie/Bridget was still alive and therefore he was still legally married.

Thomas was convicted in April 1850 in Co Clare (even though he came from Co Galway), so I doubt that his wife would have been emigrating in 1849.

Pity! That would have solved a problem for us if Mrs James O'Donnel was called Bridget/Biddie.

Watson Family Website: http://watsongenealogy.tribalpages.com/

Regards
Colleen

Hi there
Gosh - this thread started a long time ago.
I have very little information on the COYNE people in my ancestry; viz:

Father Martin COYNE; he was a farm in/around Clifden
Mother Mary WALSH
Sons:
Thomas COYNE born c1820-1824
John Joseph COYNE born c1834

I have only approximate dates of birth for the two sons based on other records in Western Australia. Both of these sons were convicts and were transported to Western Australia. Further info for those interested: www.ausgenealogy.com/RossWatsonGenealogy/ There's a link called 'Ancestors' which goes to the database. More up to date version now here - http://watsongenealogy.tribalpages.com/

Given that Thomas was born 1820-1824 and JJ was born 1834 there must have been a lot of other children in between.

However - that's everything I know about this family, even though my parents and I have searched for over 30 years, visited Ireland twice and tried to link up with other COYNE families in these areas.

To date, we cannot make any connections with other families and the parish records we need are just not available.

As far as the second part of your query is concerned: There are some records available now for some of the Irish families who emigrated to places in the US - but perhaps you've already found these as you have the name of the ship they emigrated on.

If you are looking for the births of Catherine Bridget, Mary, Sarah and Ann you will have more luck than me if the births of these women are post civil registration - I think that was about 1867. If the emigration/ship manifests detail their approximate ages and where they came from then you should be able to order the birth certificates from Ireland.

Here's hoping you have more success than me! Best wishes
Colleen

We suspect that Thomas COYNE, born c1820 (son of Martin COYNE & Mary WALSH, farmer, Clifden) married someone called Biddie (Bridget?) c1849-1850.

Thomas was convicted of sheep stealing in Co Clare in April 1850 - we found the newspaper article of the time listing all those convicted that day at Ennis. Thomas spent time at Spike Island prison, Cork before being transported to Western Australia in 1853.

Convicts were permitted to ask permission for wives/family to join them. Thomas wrote to Biddie Coyne of Clifden, asking her to join him. No reply was ever received.

Thomas farmed with his younger brother John Joseph COYNE (also a convict, born c1834) at Irishtown - near Northam, a town 100kms east of Perth, Western Australia.

Thomas COYNE eventually married a widow Kathleen ATKINSON (nee FARLAND) in 1887 in Northam; he was 63 years old by this time. We think he waited this long to marry in case Biddie was still alive in Clifden. These COYNE brothers were Catholic.

Thomas died in Northam in 1901, his brother John Joseph died in 1912.

Our family website is at http://watsongenealogy.tribalpages.com/.

Colleen

I have similar connections as yours in Ireland. My Coyne family is from Galway also. My GG grandfather was named Tady Coyne (really Tadgh)who married Catherine Lydon. I have never been able to locate the exact town in Ireland other than the Clifden area. Catherine Lyhdon's mother was a Bridget Coyne also.
Tady moved to Marcellus, NY coming over in 1862 with his family. He was born about 1834 in Galway. I couldn't figure out how he came to a very small village like Marcellus directly from Ireland so figured he must have known or been related to someone living there. I have since found that he had two brothers, Patrick and Rodger and a sister, Sarah (married a Gannon) all in Marcellus before him.
According to his death cert, his parents were John Coyne and Ellen "Nellie" Welsh (or possibly Walsh, hard to read!)
Catherine Lydon Coyne's sister, Jane married a Thomas Thornton. THe THorntons were from Letterfrack and the Lydons were supposed to be from Moyard all in Galway.

HI. Just a tip. Be looking for Bridget Coyne as well. I have a long COyne line in my family from early 1800's to my mom. ONe of my grandfather's aunts was known as Delia most of her life but on their immigration record she's listed as Bridget. I've since learned that Bridget and Delia are used interchangeably in Ireland. Her grandmother was also named Bridget and she lived with them in Marcellus NY in mid 1800's so I think they stareted calling their daughter DElia to differentiate!

I e-mailed the current parish and they knew nothing and weren't interested in finding me a parish member who would do some research for a fee.
Barbara

Hi, Grace, Your message is very interesting to me, not because I specifically know of your birth mother, but because I have done adoption research over the years, and also because both my great-grandmother and my great-great-grandmother were named Coyne. In addition, your message history seems to suggest you are looking for a person with the name Corbit. Amazingly, my great-grandmother on the OTHER side of the family had that name! All were from Ireland. Like to talk to you more personally--off the message board. Don't know if I can help you, but can maybe suggest other leads you could try. Best, Peggy
