Joseph Crabb, 20th Indiana volunteers

My great, great, great Grandfather was a man named Joseph Crabb. He was a PVT. in company D of the 20th Indiana Volunteer regiment. Almost all of his brothers were in the same regiment. One died after a wound at Gettysburg, at Camp Letterman. His name was Andrew, he was only 21 when he died. Another brother, Ira, died in 1864. Joseph (sometimes referred to as Josiah for some reason) took his wounds at the battle of White Oak Swamp during the seven days battles. He lived through this and lived to start a family. (THANK GOODNESS) He was married to a woman named Martha J. Simpson. They had children one of whom as named Cassandra Crabb. This woman, Cassie, married my great great grandfather Albert Gallatin Stewart. They had a son named Albert Reginald Stewart, his son's name was Ronald Eugene. My father's name is Warren Albert Stewart. My name is Kelsey Jane Stewart. To make a longer story short, I am currently in my Senior year of high school. I work at a history museum and intend on becoming a history major. I am trying to compile as much information about the crabb brothers and the 20th Indiana as well as any possible family life information as I possibly can.

Hello Joyce,

Would you have any info on James Alexander Crabb born Kilrenny, Fife 1893, married Mary Mitchell Brown in Kilrenny 1910. Emigrated to Hawaii via Canada. He worked on a Sugar Plantation in Hawaii and I think died in California in 1943. Mary died in 1920 in Hawaii, but I feel sure he would have remarried as I believe they had 4 living children when Mary died. He seems to have travelled a lot between Hawaii, Canada, New York and Australia. Have a suspicion he then married an Australian lady Lillian Bowman. Would love to find any info on any decendants.
Many thanks, Lorraine

Did you find proof of the elder Vincent being the son of Gerrard Crabb and Elizabeth Minor? How do we know Fannie and Vincent were brothers? I don't think we will find what Vincent M's middle initial is. I looked for that for years.

If it helps at all, I had a distant aunt that visited the cemetery where Vincent M. and Hannah are buried (I visited there myself years later) . It was noted that someone recorded a William Crabb who would have been Vincent M.'s age or older but sadly it was later written that the row where the graves were had a fence installed there and the stones were not there. Did you ever run into a William? It sits on hill with a ravine so I imagine that it's possible some of the old neglected stones just fell down the hill and were buried. The cemetery was turned into an Indiana natural prairie grass area and therefore never attended to. I'm sure the state thought this was a really great thing to do but it's not when your relatives are buried there. I also have another line buried in that cemetery;

Vincent M. Crabb was a brother to my ggg grandmother, Fannie Minor Crabb. They were the children of Vincent Crabb and Sarah Jamison. Vincent M. was born around 1805 in Pickaway County, Ohio. One other known sibling is Jarrett Crabb, also born in Pickaway County and moved to Kosicusko County, Indiana with his wife and in-laws, William and Sarah Leazenby, in the late 1830s. The Crabb line goes back to the 1600s in Westmoreland County, Virginia but the Jamison line is still a brick wall. The older Vincent Crabb's father was Gerrard Crabb and his mother Elizabeth Minor. I suspect that son Vincent M's middle name was also Minor but I haven't been able to prove that fact as of yet.
I am a direct descendant. I have quite a bit of information on the line but I (and others before me) hit a bit wall on his parents but it's suggested that it was Vincent Crabb and Sally (Sarah) possibly Jamison. Are you a descendant of John Wesley Crabb?

Mary, I have a Stephen Crabb on the 1820 Wayne Co, Tn census. It shows him 18-26 with wife and one young male child. I'm trying to establish his family, where they came from and where they went. It appears he is connected to the family being discussed here.
There is a James Crabb on 1830 census 20-30 with 4 children.
Also on 1830 is Pilon Crabb with 2 males 30-40, wife and two children. None of the family appears on 1840 census. I wonder if this is Relian.

Bryan,

Thankyou for taking the time to respond. I thought it was a possibility that Elizabeth was baptised a few years after her birth.
I should have mentioned that she died in 1879, aged 89, so her life events happened before the BMD records started. Marriage in 1816 to James Crabb, and 2 sons born 1817 and 1823.

My mystery is as follows:
Elizabeth Tolley, baptised 1797, Netherbury,Dorset.
Elizabeth Richards, baptised 1797, Stoke Sub Hamden, Somerset.
Elizabeth Richards Tolley married James Crabb 1816 (maybe married to a Tolley prior to this)

Elizabeth Crabb listed in the following Census:
1841 age 50 (fits) born Dorset OR age 45, born Dorset, with son Henry, age 15 (name fits but ages don't)
1851 age 58 (close enough)not born in Dorset
1861 no record
1871 age 81 (age and family members fit), born Stoke Sub Hamden,Somerset. Death certificate supports this 1871 age, but maiden name and birthplace aren't provided.

I realise I may have to settle for no definitive answer, but I really would like to learn her true identity.

Thanks!
Mezz,

I have a similar set of circumstances. 3 of my ancestors were baptised at the same time in March 1896 but they were born in 1892, 1894 and 1895.

I read somewhere that it was quite common for childrens baptisms to be "saved up" and done together, probably to save money.

Have you tried tracking Elizabeth on any of the earlier Censuses?

Also, her son's birth certificate (or any of her children) will show her maiden name then you should be able to track the marriage record. Get the marriage certificate and you'll have another indication of her age (as long as the marriage happened after 1837).

Hope that helps,

Bryan

Death certificate information

Hello,

I was wondering how much credence I can give the information supplied on an 1879 death certificate. I know it's only as good as the informant (in this case an illiterate person), but there is a 6-7 year difference between the baptism date and the year of birth as indicated by the age of the deceased, Elizabeth Crabb.
The age in the 1871 Census also supports the age on the death certificate, Elizabeth was with her son and his family. I am trying to confirm her maiden name, birth year and birth place.

Is a death certificate plus census enough evidence to come to a reasonable conclusion? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thankyou,
Mezz

Are you still researching the Crabb family names? I can fill in information regarding Thomas Franklin Crabb, son of Freelin Crabb and Mary Elizabeth Snipes Crabb. Freelin is my GGG Grandfather and Thomas Franklin is my GG Grandfather. Thomas Franklin, who was known as Frank, had two sons only. This chart is wrong. The other 3 kids listed under Thomas Franklin actually belonged to William James Crabb. Thomas Franklin and Mary Lou Whitaker Crabb only had two sons: Taylor Franklin Crabb (b. 1890) and Robert Perry Crabb (b. 1892). Mary Lou Whitaker Crabb died in 1894 of tuberculosis. Also, Thomas Franklin Crabb was not a son of John Henry Crabb as this chart suggests. Thomas Franklin Crabb was the son of Freelin Crabb. So was William James Crabb and John Henry Crabb.
Betty Lovelace
Germantown, TN
