Not at this point. Preliminary research indicates that these people should be included in volume 2 of Origins and Lives of the Craftons of Virginia. Volume 1 was published in November 2011 and covers the Craftons descended from James and Keren-happuch Crafton. Volume 2, whose publication is probably a couple of years away, will deal with those believed to descend from James's brother.

Hello,
I, too, am looking for relatives with the Surname of Crafton, Washington, and Bailey who lived in the Pickens,Holmes County area of Mississippi beginning right after the end of the Civil War. Specifically, I am looking for Martha Crafton Washington who was said to have lived 114 years. She was born in Virginia and bore Georgiana, Indiana, Alpha Ann, Phil, William Henry and Isiah.
Please let me know if any of these names look familiar.
Thanks for any information you can provide.
Kathy Wilcox, Seattle Washington (Martha's great-great-great-granddaughter)

By the time of the Civil War there were quite a few Crafton descendants living in Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois. I was unable to tell from your post which of them are of interest. If you'll contact me at crohtun@aol.com I can tell you about work I've done that covers most of these people.

Ray Crafton

Cerena Artela Elizabeth Crafton/lyon/Line

Texas Deaths, 1890-1976
Name: Cerena Artela Elizabeth Line
Death Date: 23 March 1938
Death Place: Precinct 1, Grayson, Texas
Gender: Female
Race: White
Death Age: 73 years 8 months 5 days
Birth Date: 7/18/1864
Birthplace: Tennessee Marital Status: Widowed
Spouse's Name: I. M. Line
Father's name: Crafton
Father's birthplace: Tennessee
Mother's Name: Buchanan
Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee
Occupation: Household
Place of Residence: Denison, Texas
Cemetery: Cherry Mound Cemetery
Burial Date: 24 march 1938

I have always thought this Elizabeth Crafton was the sister of my grandpa, George W. Crafton...Their parents being Wm H. Crafton and Mary A. Buchanan.

In the 1880 Census of Humphreys County, TN, Elizabeth Crafton, age 24 was in the household of Mary A. Crafton, the widow of Wm H. Crafton. If this is the same Elizabeth Crafton after she married Isaac Lyon/Line she became 10 years younger.

This death certicate says her parents were Crafton and Buchanan.

Does anyone from this Crafton/Lyon/Line lineage have documentation on who her parents were? Her parents may have been Jeremiah Crafton, brother of Wm H., Jeremiah Crafton married, Matilda Buchanan, sister of Mary A. Buchanan/Crafton.

I was told Jeremiah Crafton, died in the Civil War, so if Cerena Artela Elizabeth Crafton, was actually born in 1864, I think her parents would have been Wm H. Crafton and Mary A. Buchanan.

Jo Ann Crafton

Thank you Crafton6992, I know faith1951 and I are from the same line, our great grandmothers were sisters. I am new at this and am still trying to verify what info I have. There seem to be a lot of John, Bennett and Susan Craftons.Several married to Sniders, which is funny because my great grandmother Anna Lula Crafton married Jerome Sampson Snider! I want to make sure to keep them straight, but gets very confusing!

Do you know how to contact Thelma? I would really like to sit down with her and go over any history she can give me. Do you know who it was that they always called "Shorty"? I just remember an "Uncle Shorty", seems like he was a painter? It has been many years and I was quite young...

George died in California, Jan 1965. He had 3 children. Mary, Deana Fay, and William Leonard. My mom (Mary) is 91 now, but Deana Fay and William are deceased. My mom said that the brothers were Rome, George, Martin Luther, Alvin, and Bert, ( 2 more that she can't remember who died at young ages) and two sisters Mary and Bertha. If I can find pictures, I'll post them. I'm working on a family tree under George Crafton.

I am looking for any information on McKeel Cemetery near Cuba Landing, Tennessee. Does anyone know where this cemetery is located? An exit or any information would be helpful. I'm passing through that area at the end of Oct. 2010. Would love to go to the cemetery and take pictures and do some cemetery readings.

Thanks, Chris Riley
schtch51@comcast.net

Thank you for the info. 1850 Census has Armand Crafton Roney in Warren Co., KY.
I don't find "Armand" in 1860. However, I found what I believe might be her in Sumner Co. living next door to her daughter Mahala Chism (Chisham)under the name Narcissa Roney. There are several reasons I believe this is actually Armand. Check it out, see what you think.
In 1880 she is living with her granddaughter Mollie Hughes in Sumner Co. Mollie was the daughter of Mahala.

Re: Craftons from Virginia to Kentucky.

I'm sorry for the long delay in responding. I've been working on getting the website craftonbooks.com up and running and hope to have it on-line in a month or so. It will contain a summary of volume 1 of the book I've been working on for 15 years on the Craftons of Virginia. Volume 1 will be available some time in 2011.

It appears that the Craftons you're interested in are going to be in Volume 2. Since I'm concentrating on volume 1, I've only done some preliminary work on Craftons in your line at this point. So please take the following with a grain of salt...or two.

Armand seems to have been one of three Crafton siblings to marry in Sumner Co., TN between 1826 and 1828. You probably already know the other two: Polly who married Peter Davis and Hezekiah who married Sally Massey. These two marriages were two days apart in August 1826.

My research for volume 1 fails to connect the three Sumner Craftons with any of the Craftons who moved from Lunenburg Co., VA to Middle Tennessee or to Kentucky in the early 1800s. So there's definitely some mystery as to their parentage. I think that these three Craftons may be children of the James Crafton who married Sally C. Davis, the daughter of Henry Davis, in Warren Co., KY on 10 June 1817. Since the three Sumner Craftons married just 9 to 11 years after their presumed father, they could not have been children of the former Sally Davis. They would instead have had to be the product of an earlier marriage of James Crafton.

Based on James Crafton's reported age in the 1820 and 1840 censuses of Warren, he was born in the period 1771-1775 and was, therefore, between 42 and 46 years old when he married in Warren. So it's very likely that James's marriage to Sally Davis in Warren was indeed his second.

It's interesting that a second Hezekiah Crafton arose among the Warren County Craftons in 1837 and he seems to be a late-born son of old James Crafton himself...and presumably the former Sally Davis this time. He appears in the Logan Co., KY census along with other Craftons that can be mapped back to James Crafton's household. So that's a further clue that the first Hezekiah Crafton and his two presumed sisters in Sumner were produced by James Crafton of Warren.

Another of James Crafton's sons was named Bennett and this son later cited Virginia as his father's birthplace. Based on this and the use of the name Bennet, I believe that James Crafton must have come to Kentucky directly from King William County, VA or one of its neighboring counties in the early 1800s. Y-DNA data that one of James's descendants has gathered matches that of the Crafton males who originated in King William County including James Crafton, the man who married Keren-happuch in King William and later moved his family to Lunenburg Co., VA.

Nevertheless, James of Warren Co., KY does not appear to be a descendant of James and Keren-happuch of King William and Lunenburg. This couple had two sons who brought their families to KY and one son who brought his family to Middle Tennessee. All three of these Crafton men had sons named James, but as volume 1 shows, they can all be accounted. None of them could be James Crafton of Warren County.

Hope this is useful. If you have any data concering Armand (Crafton) Roney after her marriage that would one day help with the preparation of volume 2 I'd love to discuss it with you. Feel free to contact me at crohtun@aol.com.

Ray Crafton

James and Keren-happuch's children were being born in the 1740s; they themselves were a generation older.

Here's one way to see that.

Let's look at James and Keren-happuch's son, William, and in particular at William's daughter, Sarah. Sarah married Seth Farley in Lunenburg and the marriage bond carried a February 1778 date. For reasons both biological and legal it was rare for women to be much less than 16 at the time of their marriage. Using this bit of information and later censuses of Seth Farley's household we can get a really narrow estimate of Sarah's birth year: 1761 or 1762. Thus Sarah's father, William Crafton, was married by about 1760 or 1761.

Men had to prove that they were capable of supporting a family so grooms in colonial Virginia had a median age at first marriage of 23. That gave them time to reach adulthood, bring in a harvest or two, and prove themselves to their intended or to her father.

SO...William Crafton was born no later than 1737-1738 give or take a year or two. Repeating the same process for William's father indicates he was born about 1713-1714 give or take several years on either side.

William was arguably the eldest of James and Keren-happuch's children so all the rest of the couple's children appear to have been born later -- including a son named James.

Ray

Round about 1713 give or take a few years for James. Keren-happuch most likely a few years younger. King William County was formed 1702 out of King and Queen County which, in turn, was formed from New Kent County in 1691. So most likely both were born in what would have then been King William County.

Faith,

You're most welcome! Keren-happuch was one of Job's daughters. In the Bible her older sisters were Jemima and Kezia. All three names were applied to women in the colonial south but Keren-happuch was the rarest of the three. Translations from Hebrew:
Jemima - dove
Kezia - cassia
Keren-happuch - literally "horn of the face paint." Since cosmetics were stored in animal horns I believe a more satisfactory translation would be "implement of beauty."

(By the way, just because K-h in the Bible was the third of three sisters I wouldn't want to leap to the conclusion that K-h Crafton was as well. It's certainly possible, but don't know if it's probable.)

A couple of Crafton sons gave that name to daughters in honor of their mother. These women were usually referred to as just "Keren." (Note there are lots of variant spellings; I've used the one from the King James Bible since that's the one colonial Virginians were using.)

I don't know of anyone who can substantiate the parents of James Crafton or Keren-happuch ___. However, I've gathered enough evidence from surviving records to propose

1)the family of origin for Keren-happuch
2)the maiden name of James Crafton's mother

I've also developed a mathematical model that I hope to describe at next year's National Genealogical Conference that allows us to develop the name of James Crafton's father with a probability of about 75%.

I don't want to throw the names out on the bulletin board because without the data and the modeling behind them, they're virtually meaningless. Their development is covered in the upcoming book. (I will be donating the book to selected libraries so that it's available to people who don't want to buy it.)

So back to work...I have a few library visits to make today to clean up some holes in chapter 8...7 more chapters to edit after this. And then there's volume 2...some day...

Ray
Faith,

James and Keren-happuch's children were named William, Richard, John, Anthony, James, Thomas, Joseph, Ann (who married Reuben Tatum), and Elizabeth (who married Christopher Robertson). James left a will in Lunenburg County listing the foregoing children.

As I mentioned in my reply to your other query, there are quite a few documents naming Anthony's wife Mary. However, I've never seen one that hints at her family of origin. One researcher thought Anthony's wife was the daughter of Benjamin Tatum. (Benjamin was the father of Reuben, the man Ann Crafton married.) However, Lunenburg records disprove that hypothesis. Benjamin Tatum had a daughter named Mary but she married someone else, not Anthony Crafton.

Anthony Crafton stayed in King William County for about seven years after his parents and most of his sibling left for Lunenburg in 1764. He followed them in 1771 and it looks like he married in King William prior to his move to Lunenburg. (His first son was born about 1770.) So it looks like whoever Mary was, she was someone Anthony married in King William.

Since most of King William's records were destroyed in a fire we may never know for sure who Anthony's wife was. The same problem exists with Anthony's older brother William. He also stayed in King William after James and Keren-happuch left and he definitely married there. He and his wife had 3 children before coming to Lunenburg.

Ray Crafton
crohtun@aol.com

Can you tell me who the children of James and Keren-happuch
were ? I have no clue as to who Anothony's father was.
In your research have you ever come across Anthony Crafton and his wife Mary Tatum ?

Thanks Faith

Unfortunately there is a great deal of incorrect / questionable research floating around on the family. I'm a descendant of James and Keren-happuch Crafton via their son Richard, his son Frederick, and his son Ebenezer. I've been working on a comprehensive family history for 15 years that I hope to publish late this year. Some things I hope it will clear up:

1) Thomas Crafton who entered VA circa 1634 died without heirs. If there had been a male heir, Surry County would have shown him on tax lists and militia lists but it does not. Could the heir have moved out of the county? Not likely: Thomas Crafton's land patent in Surry was abandoned and later seized by the colony for re-granting. It would have been unthinkable for any male heir of Thomas to let such a thing happen. At the very least, had such a man existed, he would have sold the land. That never happened.

2) There was no Michael CRAFTON. There was, however, a Michael GRAFTON. One illegible land patent in the records of VA might be read as rendering the name as Crafton. However, this same man is referred to numerous times in the patents of his neighbors and in other grants to the individual himself. All of these are to Michael GRAFTON, not CRAFTON. If we really had a Michael Crafton in our line, why don't we find many Craftons naming sons Michael in commemoration of this man? That's what early Virginians did. Ours didn't because we had no such ancestor.

3)James and Keren-happuch Crafton came to Lunenburg County from King William County, VA in 1764. A comprehensive examination of records shows that at the time they left King William, there was a cluster of other Crafton households. How did that cluster arise? The most likely explanation is the entry of another Thomas Crafton into VA, the one who arrived in New Kent County in 1672. New Kent was subdivided subsequent to his arrival into King William and all of the other nearby counties in which nearly all of the Craftons of VA could be found living in 1764.

Here are a few snippets from research on Anthony Crafton that I hope you'll find useful:

In his Revolutionary War pension application Anthony gave his birth year as 1747 and POB as King William County, VA.

One researcher's work claims that Mary Tatum, daughter of Benjamin Tatum, was Anthony's wife. If Mary was a Tatum at all, she was not Benjamin Tatum's daughter. BT's daughter Mary married Daniel Lefoe in Lunenburg in 1791 and was still married to Lefoe as late as 1818. All of that is of record in Lunenburg County marriage and estate papers.

Anthony's wife is referred to as Mary in numerous documents, but none that I've examined in the last 15 years ever name her family of origin. Anthony stated that he moved to Lunenburg County from King William in 1771 (when he was about 24). So it appears that he married Mary ___ in King William. The records of that county are largely destroyed.

According to Mary Crafton's affidavit in her husband's pension files, Anthony died in Spencer County, KY on 11 December 1832. Based on the number and amount of reported pension payments to Mary she evidently died about the middle of 1834.

Perhaps you could help me with something...the Crafton book that I hope to publish later this year has a 70 page chapter on Anthony and Mary Crafton's children and grandchildren. The families of their sons Anthony and Bennett are included. I do not currently have their son Anthony with a son named John C. Crafton. Can you point me to the source for that? I'd love to include him. Thanks!

You're also welcome to contact me at crohtun@aol.com

My reference to Michael "Crafton" was simply in response to the appearance of this name in the title of the thread: "...Michael Crafton's land grant."

Yes, it was Eliza Timberlake Davis who made the error in transcribing Surry County records. We all make them from time to time. Here is my transcription of the opening lines of the same entry:

1)Surry County Deeds, Will Book 1 p.124
"This bill bindeth mee Anthonye Redwood my heires, executors administrator or assignes to pay or Caus to be paid unto Mary Crafton or her assignes upon all demands ye full & Just some of fouwer hundred pounds of good sound Current & Merchantable tobackoe..."

2) On the next page of the record book there follows another indenture in which Anthony Redwood deeds over to Mary Crafton some of his household furnishings.

While we can quibble over whether my transcription is letter-perfect one thing is certain: the name Mary Crafton, not something else, is clearly written out in both entries.

I hope to finally publish my 15 years of work on volume 1 of the Crafton family late this year. In it I've tried to correct as many errors as possible (and add as few of my own as possible!)

Ray Crafton

Thanks, for your information...But, I believe Eliza Timberlake Davis, was the author of Surry County records, Surry County, Virginia, 1652-1684. I didn't realize she was a transcriber who couldn't read old handwriting.

I believe her exact words were Major Crafton...Not Michael Crafton.

If you look at the original records involved you will find the following:

"Major" Crafton in Surry is actually a woman, Mary Crafton. She and her deceased husband, Thomas, had dealings with Redwood. A transcriber misread the old handwriting and mistook "Mary" for "Maj."

There is no Michael Crafton. This man's name was actually Michael Grafton. One illegible land patent has been transcribed as belonging to Michael Crafton. However, the other land patents granted this man and those granted to his neighbors which make reference to Michael's lands all give the surname of Grafton.
