Hello Alice
You might be interested in this bit of information for your family tree. You will notice that I have changed the subject a little.
Your JOHN CRAIB had a nephew called JOHN CRAIB. John, the nephew, was born 1863 in Fordyce and died 1819 in Queensland (probably Charters Towers). The nephew JOHN was a son of James Craib and James Craib was a brother to your JOHN CRAIB. James Craib married Elspet Wilson 1857 in Portknockie.

For YOUR records James Craib, Brother to your JOHN CRAIB, was born 1834 in Rathven and died 1913 in Cairnty Croft. Elspet Wilson (Craib) was born 1831 in Cullen and died 1887 in Rothes.

For MY records JOHN CRAIB, son of James, migrated to Australia and setteled in Charters Towers Queensland. John married Annie Maria Braithwaite 1887 in Queensland (probably Charters Towers) and had at least four children called John Archibald Craib born 1892, James Alexander Craib born 1888, Elsie Mary Craib born 1896, and Lillian Isabell Craib born 1889.
We know that Elsie Mary Craib married Hector Hanvin Hislop in 1917 and we also know that Elsie Mary died in 1825 and is buried at Roma General. We also believe that there were at least two children to this marriage.
My information stops here and I would be interested if anyone could help me with the descendants of this John Craib son of James. This John Craib was a brother to Helen Craib My great grandmother.
Alice your JOHN CRAIB ancestors go back, on my tree, to Alexander Craib born 16?? who married Margaret Gray 16?? Alexander married Margaret in 1707.
I have just returned from a six week holiday with my wife and we had seven days in Scotland. We got quite a few photos of our, and your, Ancestors toombstones.
The problem with our Jane Craib is that, although it is possible that she is related to your John Craib, she was actually illegitimate. Her father was Alexander Craib and her mother was Jane Patterson. It doesn't appear that they were married at the time. I found a John Craib born in Aberdeen on the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" website. This John Craib's father was named Alexander Craib and his wife was Helen Howit. Certainly it is interesting that both John and Jane immigrated to Nova Scotia, and that isn't always a coincidence.
T'hanks for the speedy return Don. The dates seem a little off, as COCOA CRAIB, according to his (step) grandson, was visiting his step-son in the 1930s.
Apparently he was a cocoa grower in Ceylon ,rather than tea.
His wife was Helen/Ellen Simpson, widow of Peter. Her maiden name was Duncan.
As a teen, the step_son spent his holidays at Balbithan with family.
Any connections anyone?

I believe Cocao's given name was Alexander and he was born October 18, 1850 at Strathmore, Coull, Aberdeenshire. He was possibly the 7th child and 5th son of John Craib and Helen Elmslie. He may have been a tea planter in Ceylon but I am unable to confirm. It would also appear that Alexander died about June 15 1925 at Balnagowan, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. I have no record him marrying.
Don
