Is there anyone who could look up two obituaries in the Galloway Advertiser and Wigtownshire Free Press. The first is for William Craigie who died 19th September 1853 at Wigtown,Wigtownshire, aged 72 years. He was a Customs Officer for H.M.Customs,so may have been a prominent enough citizen to warrent an obituary. He worked in Wigtown from 1829 till his death.I know he was born in Orkney, but I need to find out his parents names if possible,or any facts about his early life. His wife Agnes(aka Ann/Annie)Kilgour died 7th June 1851 aged 62 years.

My 6th g-grandfather was Dr. William Craigie, b.1799, who immigrated to Ontario in 1834 (going first to Ancaster, then moved to Hamiliton in 1844). He left Scotland from Keith and was given an engraved silver tea set from the citizenry there as a mark of their estimation for his work. He married a Campbell and they had 9 children. He was a doctor, teacher, scientist, botanist, and had many other areas of interest. He was published in the medical association journal for his article on tracheotomies in Scotland.

I know of three children, Charles C., b.abt. 1873, Mary, b.abt. 1875, and James, b.abt. 1879.

I cannot locate this family after 1880.

Florence MILLER, b.abt. 1851, had a sister named Olive MILLER who was b.abt. 1855.

If familiar please contact me at your convenience. I hope you will post a public family tree to share what info you have-- or if not, maybe respond on this board with the info/dates/marriage, etc you have for him & descendants--- we may be distant/several-times-removed cousins!!

Dave: I came across this old post today as I was searching the boards, and am thrilled to notice names of people/towns from my own family research: Craigie in Lochgelly/ Auchterderran/Fife--- My ancestor: Dr. William Craigie was born in Belnaboth Parish, Lochgelly in 1799 (see my public tree). Coming forward is fairly well documented, but I am seeking earlier ties & confirmation, and I believe there may be a connection here as many of the names /dates/places match what you have listed...I am wondering if my Dr. William Craigie is perhaps sibling or uncle of your Craigie line? I hope you may see this and have a chance to review my online tree to see if you can find a connection... I hope to hear back from you... thanks.

Hi Brenda, I think I can take you back one generation further. Your William Craigie, b1810 on Gairsay is my ggg-grandfather. I show his parents as William (nmn), born between 1770 and 1790. He married Margaret Shearer by 1810. Margaret was born in that same time range in the Orkneys. But that's as far back as I got, and I hired a gentleman in Scotland to do some further digging. That's as far as the records go. I have some paperwork on this William and Margaret born tween 1770-1790 if you'd like to see it.
khamren@comcast.net
Janine

My grandfather was the child of Elizabeth Simpson Craigie. Her mother was Elizabeth Simpson, father William Craigie both living in Sth Shields Durham at the time of their marriage on 14th September 1851. Both parents claimed to be from the Orkney islands. The father of William was another William Craigie, a labourer, of Orkneys. He may have been married to a Margaret Bews. There are just too many Williams, James, Margarets and Elizabeths to track them down easily.
Another family in my town (Busselton, Western Australia)has a far more complete family tree of their Craigies who definitely came from the Orkneys. I can put you in touch with them. They don't have the internet as far as I know.
I intend to go to the Orkneys in June 2007 while I am in the UK. Just out of curiosity. Cheers Diana Hemsley (Craigie)

I am trying to trace my family tree. My mother is Catherine Tarbet. She was Catherine O'Neill born 30.11.1923. Her parents were John O'Neill and Annie Cooper and they were married in Port Glasgow Scotland on 01.01.1900. Annie Cooper was born in Govan Scotland on 9.6.1899. Her parents were James Manson Cooper (Couper) and Annie Scott and they were married in Govan Glasgow Scotland on 26.8.1897. James Manson Cooper (Couper) was born on 31.3.1873 in Holm and Palpay Orkney and his parents were David Cooper and Dugles Craigie. I think there were other children who could have been :
Helen Couper d.o.b. 7.2.1859
William McGillivary Couper d.o.b.7.3.1862
Mary Leonard Couper d o b 22.11.1863
David Shearer Couper d o b 11.7.1866
Harriet Couper d o b 11.11.1867
Joanna Baikie Couper d o b 29.7.1871
then James Manson Couper 31.5.1873

We may be related somewhere along the way.

I just found some exciting news on my Craigie research.

Robert and Ellen CRAIGIE from Kirkwall, Orkney (he is described in 1831 as a merchant and in 1834 as a storekeeper) were the parents of:

Augustus CRAIGIE - born 29/10/1831, baptised 18/12/1831
William Cullen CRAIGIE - born 5/1/1834, baptised 30/6/1834

Christ Church, Rio de Janeiro - Baptismal Register, Vol 2, No 249/296

Augustus was No 249 in the register and William was No 296.

Augustus married in Marblehead, MA USA and died in Port St. Vincent, South Australia. He lived in Strathalbyn, South Australia.

William Cullen Craigie also lived in Strathalbyn, South Australia.

Broad St. Phila"
Handwritten on the back of the first photo: "John Craigie, Jr. 13 years old next Dec." One the back of the second photo: "Victor Craigie 11 years old next Nov."
The third photo is a postcard picture addressed to Mrs Weinholdt (my relation). It reads: "Baby Andrew was 2 years old 21st February past. (signed) M. Craigie 1743 Siegel St."
I don't know if this family is related to mine or not.
I found a scrap of paper of my g-grandmother's that had an address for Mrs. George (or maybe Geary) Craigie at 1150 Barklay, Vancouver BC and listed her as "Grandma Johnson's Niece", Grandma Johnson probably meaning Marion (Binnie) Johnson of Deer Creek, MN, d. 1948. Possible associated names are Binnie, Thomson. Probably at Barklay St. sometime between 1940-1980. Anyone recognize this? Thanks.

Yes, I have seen the site although it gives very little details about Craigie. I have not found any evidence yet that he lived in Hampton Wick and he certainly did not attend the Endowed School. I have found his service records at the PRO, but no mention of Hampton Wick.
I too attended the Endowed School leaving in 1961, the same year as you presumably, although I'm sorry I don't recall your name !
I'm writing a history of Hampton Wick which will include a section on the school so I'll keep you posted. What photographs have you got ?
Best wishes, Paul Barnfield
