My Grandmother was Maggie Ozella Crain, born in Texas in 1900. I have over 300 photos of the Crain/Wright Family, some on tin. If you think you're related to me email me. Thanks!

My GrandMother is Maggie Ozella Crain, her Sister was Mary. My Grandmother married Raymond Earl Wright. My Grandmothers side of the Family is related to Harry S. Truman (a Young married a Truman.) My Grandmother was the Granddaughter of Col. William Cocke Young, 11th Texas Calvary Regiment. His Father fought at the Battle of San Jacinto (and his name is on the Monument.) Our Family tree states that 2 Crain Brothers came over in 1700, from Wales and they were Protestant Preachers.
Are we related?

Hi! I know its been a long time since you posted this, but I'm going to respond and hope you get it. I am your cousin. My great grandma is your grandpa Roys sister. Her name was Rosa Melvina Crain. Her father was John Crain and her mother was Belle Sturgeon Crain. She had 4 brothers, Roy, Winfield, Otis, and Bill. I remember them all but Roy. Grandma always told me that Roy disappeared and nooone knew where he went. I have a really old picture of all the kids and Belle together. I wish I had of ran across your post sooner, because my grandma, Rosas daughter Madeline just passed away 2 weeks ago and she would have loved it that I found your post. I have no idea where any cousins are other than the ones through Rosa. Winfield lived in Frederick IL until he died. Bill lived in Alton, and I'm not sure about Otis. He came back when my great grandma died, but didn't see him after that. I have lots of family pictures. Not many from the Crain side but quite a few from the Sturgeon side. Email me when you get this. Im enclosing my email address because I'm using my nephews ancestery sign on. crystal.jones@olympia.org Hope to hear from you soon.

I just recently came across your post, so forgive me if this is old news to you.

I believe that your Amelia Crain may a sister of my GG-grandmother Mary Jane Crain Moody.

My ancestor, Nat (Nathaniel) W. Crain (b. Kentucky) is listed on the 1850 Clinton Co. MO census with Christ (Christie Ann Church) and children:

1 Mary (Mary Jane married my GG-grandfather Issac Newton Moody)
2 William (I believe his name is William Johnson)
3 M. (? - possibly Malissa or Malvina?)
4 Amelia (She may be your G-grandmother)

Additional children are listed on the 1860 Clinton Co. MO census: Eliza, James, Anderson, and Elizabeth.

I have a marriage date for Nathaniel Crain and Christie Ann Church of 15 Apr 1841 in Clinton Co. MO.

I believe the parents of Christie Ann Church are:
John Church (b. abt 1800 in KY)
Rebecca Laffoon (b. 13 Jan 1803, Fayette Co. KY)

If you think there's a connection, let me know and I can give you more info.

Nathaniel W. CRAIN m. Christie Ann CHURCH in Clinton Co., MO - 1841

I'm looking for birth/death/burial info and the parents of Nathaniel W. CRAIN, b. abt 1821 in KY. He may have died in Clinton Co., MO around 1865.

Nathaniel married Christie Ann CHURCH, 15 Apr. 1841, in Clinton Co., MO. She was b. abt 1823 in MO (possibly Clay Co.) and her parents are John CHURCH and Rebecca LAFFOON. I'm not sure when Christie Ann died.

Based on MO census/death certificate information, I have found a total of nine Crain children: Mary Jane, William Johnson, Malissa or Malvena?, Amelia, Eliza, James, Anderson B., Joseph, and Elizabeth.

I have birth/death/marriage info for Mary Jane, William J., Amelia, Anderson B., and Joseph but very little info for the four other children.

Mary Jane (m. Isaac MOODY) is my GG-grandmother. Thanks for any info you may have to offer!

There have been several Jeremiah Sparks Crains.

Perhaps Ambrose Crain (b. 1725-1730 in VA) and Elizabeth Head were parents of brothers William Crain (1752-1834) and Joel Crain (1762-1844), both of whom were born in Wake County, NC, and both died in Hardeman County, TN.

Abijah Crain, son of William Crain (1752-1834), married Milly Sparks, daughter of Jeremiah Sparks (1755-1841). Abijah Crain and Milly Sparks named a son Jeremiah Sparks Crain.

Stephen Crain, Sr. son of Joel Crain (1762-1844) married Nancy “Patty” Sparks, daughter of Jeremiah Sparks (1755-1841). Stephen Crain, Sr. and Nancy “Patty” Sparks also named a son Jeremiah Sparks Crain born 6 Apr 1809. Nancy died before 1830 in White County, TN. Stephen’s second wife was Mary Ragsdale.
This is Stephen’s will:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.crain/817.1/mb.ashx

William Crain (1752-1834), and Joel Crain (1762-1844) were brothers. William was 10 years older than Joel and both served in the American Revolution on the North Carolina Line, Both of these men died in Hardeman County, TN. A memorial marker in the Hatchie Cemetery was dedicated in 1976 to their memories.

Milly and Nancy Sparks were daughters of Jeremiah Sparks who died before January, 1841, in Morgan County, GA. Jeremiah Sparks was also an American Revolutionary patriot.
Hi Virginia;

Hmmm.....Where to start? My husband's gGrandfather is William James Beavers. He was born around July of 1830 in Buncombe Co. N.C. He was born illegitimate to Martha Ann Beavers before she ever married Albert Crain/Crane. I know this to be true from two thiings: my Father-in-Law, Leland Beavers, stated that his grandfather was born illegitimate and all he knew was that William's father's last name was Branson. But because his mother wasn't married when he was born, he took her maiden name of Beavers. Second, I have a depositon from the War Department by William Crane that confirms my findings. This gets very entailed, and I'll cover the WHOLE story for you at some point, but there isn't enough time to do that today. So I'll try to stick to the most pertinent information and then follow up with you as you want more info. You don't KNOW how long I have looked for someone in this bloodline. I can't help thinking that we've probably BOTH just hit "paydirt". I have no doubt that you and my husband are kin. Distant perhaps, but still related through a direct bloodline.

William James Beavers married Mary(Polly) Ann Griffin in Madison Co. N.C., around 1849. (I have seen the name spelled Griffe, Griffee, Griffin, Griffen, Griffith and Gruffey.) They had three sons: Albert Beavers, Stephen Beavers and Joseph Beavers. But my husband's line does not descend through any of these. (I know.....I'll explain later).

I have William Beavers and "Polly" in the 1850 Buncombe Co census living not far from Albert Crane and Martha and their kids. Although the spelling is incorrect. The census taker spelled it Bever. Mary "Polly" Ann Griffin also had a son out of wedlock - his name is John Griffin or Griffee, and he is listed in the 1850 census with them. John's father was a Roundtree, as stated by William Crane in this deposition. I would love to tell you the census page number in which to find them, but the page is so dark at the top that you can't make out the page number.

In William Crane's deposition, he states several things that are important. First, that Albert Crane is the Stepfather of Will Beavers, the soldier in question. (This would have to make Martha his mother). Second that Albert Crane is his (Wm Crane's) Uncle. And third, that Polly Griffin Beavers is his (Wm Crane's) Aunt.

With this info, I checked on Rootsweb to see if there was anything on Albert Crane and Martha posted there. But because I spelled it Crane and not Crain, I got nothing from my search. Then two days ago, I somehow stumbled across your posting here, found the spelling to be different and used that to find a hit on Rootsweb....and BINGO! I have also been in contact with a Steve Bever who is a part of the Beaver DNA project. He, too, felt that this Martha was my William's mother. The pieces just "fit". I tried to see who Mary Ann Griffin's parents were on Rootsweb, but found nothing.

I then concentrated on William Crane and WHO his parents could be. If Albert Crane was his Uncle, then one of Albert's brothers had to have been his father, and if Polly Griffin Beavers was his Aunt, then one of Polly's sisters would have had to have been his mother. I queried that and found two things: First, that Albert's brother, John Crane, did indeed marry a woman named Elizabeth Griffe. This must be Polly's sister. Second, I found that Albert's sister, Mary Crain, married a John Griffith. The William Crane who gave the deposition also stated that Polly Griffin Beavers had a brother named John Griffin. But because of the ages of the John Griffin that married Mary Crain, I must assume that they were our Polly's parents and that she was named after her mother: Mary (Polly) Ann Crain. Which would mean that we have at least three of John Griffiths and Mary Crain's children: Mary Ann, John and Elizabeth.

I have found William Beavers and "Pollie" (as it was spelled by the census taker) in the 1860 Madison Co. census with her son, John, and their three boys they had together, Albert, Stephen & Joseph. AND......they are living next door to Albert's brother, John Crane and Elizabeth, whom I am quite certain is our Polly's sister and the mother of the William Crane who gave the deposition - which he is listed there as 19 yrs old. On the other side of John Crane & Elizabeth is Albert's sister, Letty and her husband, James Plemmons and their kids.

In later years, John Griffin/Griffee, son of Polly Griffin Beavers, lived in the same area/county as Polly and her oldest son, Albert, in Cocke County, TN. In the 1880 Cocke Co. TN census, I find John Griffee and his wife, Martha & their children. Then living next door to them is a John Crane age 26, and his wife, Susan, age 25. I don't know exactly where they fit into the Crane lineage, but it's entirely too coincidental for them NOT to fit. There is also a Barnet Crane, age 21. Any idea whose family these fit into?

As you can see.....the pieces just "fit". You don't have to work very hard to put two & two together. If Martha Beavers married Albert Crain, then our Mary Ann Griffin, would been his neice and would have met Martha's son, William at family gatherings. That would explain how the two of them met.

It would also explain who William Crane's parents are, as well as who Polly's sister was.

Although the story far from ends there, I think this is probably enough for you to chew on for a while. LOLOL I have alot more info on William & Polly Beavers' descendants. As soon as you are able to get back with me I'll forward loads more info to you. If you would like, feel free to email me at: mtnesters@fuse.net. Perhaps it might be easier in the long run. But whatever you think is best if fine with me. I SO look forward to hearing from you again soon!

Warm Regards,
Sandy Beavers

I don't know what it might mean, but you might want to check closely into your GGG Grandmother's family, Sparks. Andrew's wife, Artamesa Sparks, had a brother, Jeremiah Sparks. Jeremiah Sparks Crain was born to Abijah Crain in 1829 Tennessee. His mother was Milly Sparks, born 1790 in Georgia.

I thought it might be interesting to explore the Sparks connection to the Willis since Willis was a perfect DNA match to my Crain family line. BTW, is there a representative of these Jeremiah Sparks Crains in the Crain DNA project?

Hi.
I was just reading one of you post. You said Karen Harris is your cousin. Her father is my grandfather's brother. Charles Crain. My name is Christie. I also would love to know what kind of information you have. This is exciting to me. My dad Perry, wanted me to do some research for him and my grandmother already has a lot of it finished. She knows a lot about the Crain family I had no clue about. She is going to send me what she has this weekend. I should have it by next week. If you want to know what I have, I would love to share it with you also.. Thanks and so sorry for wasting your time.
Thanks again
Christie Crain

Sandy, my GG Grandmother was Martha Ann Beavers. She married Albert Crain. I descend through their son, Jesse Wilson and his second wife, Matilda Wall.

Karen Harris is my cousin and she was the one that found the Indian Applications that proved Jesse was the son of Albert and Martha Ann Beavers Crain.

I would be happy to share any information with you that you might need.
