I am interested in any information on the family of John E. Crampton who was born in Vail, Crawford Co., Iowa, on 12 April 1909. He married Dorothy Mae Johnson on 6 July 1933 in Independence, Missouri. Dorothy was my father's cousin and I would like to contact any of their children to re-establish the family connections.

I expect your brickwall refers to the Crampton line. However, you will have no difficulty tracing a line back through the Fiennes family to 750 ad or so via:
1. Wikipedia Sir John Crampton 2nd Baronet
2. The tree given at the front of "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" by Sir Ranulph Fiennes 2009. The story of his ancestry. If you have not read it, they are your ancstors too, and you will be amazed! Tom.

Alta Mae was a popular name back then. Like John William and Charles Edward. Alta Mae CRAMPTON daughter of Charles Edward Crampton and Nora Jane Burgan married John Luther JAMISON. The Jamison families of Sharpsburg intermarried alot into various Crampton families...like the Knights and Churchey families.

So Leroy Crampton married a girl named Alta Mae(Churchey) and had a sister named Alta Mae Crampton as well.
No confusion there...
Henry was a son of Robert Crampton and Anne Rudd who immigrated directly from Ireland (Rocrea, Tipperary)to Rock Island (I have a bio of him). They had six children, Richard, Anna, Robert, Henry, Emily and Charles who either stayed in the Rock Island area or settled in Iowa. I"think" Henry was born in 1843 and married a Clara Wayne, but not sure. Let me know if this leads you anywhere.

I wanted to close the loop with you. I got over to Beaver Creek Antiques and looked for the certificate, but couldn't find it. I spoke with the manager and, apparently, you had called him because he said he got a call and also couldn't locate it. There are a couple of possibilities, the most likely of which is that the dealer either sold it or he moved his booth to another facility. Since I check out the dealers in the area fairly often, I keep an eye out for it and will let you know if it turns up.

My family was on both sides of the line there. Moses McCollum was with the 140th Pennsylvania and died of wounds received on May 3, 1863. William McCollum was with the 35th Georgia and had only recently rejoined his unit after being wounded and captured at Antietam in September 1862. He was wounded again on May 3 and returned home to Georgia for a long recuperation. He rejoined the 35th Georgia and served as regimental adjutant for the rest of the war.
I may get over to the antiques store this week end. If I do, I'll definitely take my camera and check for the document.

The document was in an antiques shop called Beaver Creek Antiques near the Sharpsburg/Antietam battlefield in Maryland. I pass by it every couple of weeks and can check to see if it's still there. Given the hefty price tag, perhaps I can just get a good digital photo of it for you.
My original post contained all of the personal data, but these certificates were quite ornate and I know how much better it is to have the image.
