Hello,
I have just starting researching my family tree.

I have gone back 4 generations of Crandons all from Weston- super-Mare that appear to be master masons in 1870s - 1900s.

Have you put a family tree together do you have an Ernest Edward Crandon feature around 1890 or his father James a generation earlier?

Thanks

Martin Crandon

Hi Bob, afraid I can`t help.We are probably connected by a slim thread as there were plenty of Crandons that came from Bleadon, Somerset and settled in Mountain Ash area, Glamorganshire (about 10 miles from Bedwelty & M Tydfil) My lot came about 1890.
My G G G grand father Robert Crandon 1808-1889 m Eliza Corfield, they had 4 sons, Wm, James, George & John. My link is through John who m Elizabeth Edwards, they had 8 children before moving to Glamorgan. Their son John Horace 1872-1899 was my g Grandfather, he had a daughter Hilda May Crandon. All the best
Sandra

My G-G-Grandfacther, William Thomas Crandon was born 9/22/1866 in Dowlais, Glamorganshire. His father was Edward Crandon. William had a sister Alice Smith born in 1873 apparently to a different father.

Edward had married Martha Bogue (also had last name of Evans - likely previously married)in 1866.

William married Mary C. Thomas on 10/31/1891 at the Parish Church in Bedwellty, Monmouth. He worked in the mines at Tredegar at that time.

These locationas are near Merthyr Tydfil and I thought you might have additional information on them. This is as far back as I have gotten with that family branch.

Thanks
Bob Camin

Hi Ray - Glad your health matters have been seen to. Peter is quite well living in Gower, 80 now. I met up with Steve T at a football match while he was home earlier in the year. Sadly his email address must have been wrong so we lost touch again. We had a good long chat and you got a mention, and you had sent photos of your home to me in the past. Hope all well at your end. Best wishes. Kay

Hi Kay,Ray here, sorry to hear about cousin Sheila,But good about her memory,I guess I am not in her mind,or not.I have had a few problems myself, Feb 2010 I had a heart attack,But a double by pass sorted that out, feel a lot better,How is the Rest of your family getting on Peter For example.I see we have another name to the Crandons But it is not matching up As I have ,Traced it back to about 1870.and the grave is up at Christchurch cemetery, I traced it from 4 Francis st,that was the family home,Getting back to the other Crandon On hear,They all came from Bleading In Somerset So that is right,By the way I think we have met when I lived on Caerleon Road,Without me realizing Who you were,LOL Ray.,

Hi Kay, we have spoken before (in 2005 !). I`m afraid I don`t know Sheila. My connection to Crandons is via John Horace 1872-1899(father to Hilda May 1898-1944 my Grand mother).
He was son of John 1852 who was brother to George, Wm & James who were sons of Robert Crandon 1808-1889 and Eliza Corfield. They were all born in Bleadon, Somerset. If I can be of any help please let me know.
Sandra

I have found a record of a large family from Wells, Somerset and there is a record of a John born 1860, His father was William Crandon (b 1926) and mother Ellen Crandon (1831). There are 7 siblings. John ended up living in Birkenhead, (nr Liverpool) and married a Margaret Conway.

Any information waould be great.

Regards

Julie

Hi Sue, I have just found your message on the Ancestry noticeboard and realise that your Henry Crandon's wife Elizabeth Puddy is the sister of my Emily Puddy who married Charles Durston in East Brent and also in the 1870's followed your couple to Wales ending up in Merthyr Tydfil. Can you fill me in with any more about the life of Henry and Elizabeth in Wales. I believe they did not stay there but moved back to Somerset. Am I right? My lot stayed in Wales and I am Jane Hussey née Durston born in Wales myself, now living in Hampshire.

I am also interested in the Crandon family background. My great-grandfather was Dr. Leroi Goddard Crandon, and he had two sisters, one of whom was named Laura. His side of the family has been in the states (supposedly) since the Mayflower, largely in the Massachussetts and Plymouth MI areas. Laura Crandon I believe moved back to England. Their father was Daniel Goddard Crandon, and his father was Dr. Benjamin H. Crandon (married to Mary Ann Crandon). Any information would be appreciated!

Hello.

Could Richard Coulson Crandon be the son of one
John Crandon (b. Somersetshire, circa 1816; died
Baldwinsville, NY 1891)?

I'm interested because my dad's middle name was
"Colston" (Lloyd Colston Crandon, 1917-1998). His
oldest's brother's name was "Richard" (Richard Louis
Crandon, 1912-1981). Their father's name was John
Crandon (1886-1967), and his father was John Billings
Crandon (1846-1917). All of them resided near Baldwinsville, NY, mainly in the Town of VanBuren.

Family tradition connects "Colston" with the Bristol,
Somersetshire area. I'd like to know if "Colston" is
a variation or corruption of "Coulson," and whether any
connection exists among these men.

Please note that today (4-1-02) our e-mail is "down."

Thank you for any light you can shed on my questions.

M.
Wow, well i just e-mailed you back, but then I came on here and looked at the messages that you posted. And I read the one that must have been posted by your husband. And the coincidences keep adding up. As I told you in the e-mail, my family moved to Iowa not Ohio. And when I spoke with my father today he said that there was an uncle phil on our side. There is just more and more that looks the same. I can talk to him and get more info. but, I think that the weirdest thing here is that I know that I read his message before and asked my dad about it and he said that there was no way that it could have been a possibility, but then now it seems like it may. Thanks and I hope we can talk..... Rosa

Re: Crandon Family Origins

Hi Nicholas

We have a lot in common. My ancestors also originated from the South Brent and Burnahm area.

In 1870 Henry Crandon married Elizabeth Puddy in S Brent Parish Church and later moved to live in Pant, South Wales. Henry was born in Winscombe 1849 and had a brother William, born in 1841. Parents John and Martha Counsell. My family history takes me back to a William Crandon born 1771 in Burnham.

I have an old map of the area and can see the Crandon Bridge and the Crandon Manor House marked. I believe at one stage it was know as the Bawdrip and Crandon Manor House. My dad stood there the other day to have his photo taken at the bridge (it's rather an insignificant Bridge - don't you think!). I believe there is also a Crandon Cross a few miles away.

Crandon is said to mean "place of the cranes" and the Latin is Grenedon. This follows really for the Brent area as it was a low lying wet pasture land full of birds before the road planners were let loose.

We were recently in Florida and were amazed to come across the Crandon Park. It had a golf course, tennis courts and a large park all on a elongated island. very picturesque. We took a picture of the golf course as my dad is a keen player. That Crandon was a Commissioner of the City of Miami and was very involved in the development of environmental policies.

I am now in my 40s and am living in Cornwall, and my dad lives in Bristol and is in his 70s. He is also v interested in the family history. We have been researching for just over two years and have come to a halt for the time being. But would love to share our info with you and hope that there is some common link.

We have made connections with family in both Australia and America and have been regularly e-mailing each other.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Sue
sud.davies@europemail.com

Crandon Family Origins

The surname Crandon would almost definitely seem to originate from Somerset, England. A reference to the name can be found in the Domesday Book, compiled in around 1086. It mentions the Manor of Crandon in the county of Somerset as belonging to a landowner called Humphrey the Chamberlain. The manor no longer exists, but there is still a Crandon Bridge near to where it once stood, not far from the town of Bridgwater. I was born nearby, in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, and my father's family came from a village called Lympsham, between Bridgwater and Weston-super-Mare. I consulted the Mormons' Genealogy Website and found very many records for Crandons who were born in that area, and managed trace some of my ancestors back to around 1780. They were nearly all born in Lympsham or places nearby (Berrow, East Brent, Burnham, Highbridge), so it looks like many generations of Crandons carried on living for centuries very close to the Crandon Manor mentioned in the Domesday Book. However, Crandons also seemed to have emigrated to the New World at a very early date - on various genealogy sites I have seen very old entries for Crandons which would suggest that they arrived in America at around the time of the Mayflower. This seems quite feasible, as the port of Plymouth where the Mayflower sailed from is not so far away from the Bridgwater area. Nearer still is the port of Bristol, which had important trade links with America. In the USA there is a village and mine called Crandon in Wisconsin and a Crandon leisure park in Miami, Florida. There is also an prestigious private school called the Crandon Institute in Montevideo, Uruguay. Crandons seem to have travelled far and wide! That's about all I know about the obscure origins of the Crandon surname, if anyone has any further information it would be nice to know.

I am searching for any knowledge of Richard Coulson Crandon who was born in "England" (location unknown) circa 1842. My trail of him in the USA begins in 1862 in New York and is fairly well documented forward except for a period from 1865-1879. He was in Kentucky in the latter portion of this period. He moved then to eastern Kansas (South Mound in Neosho County) then to Western Kansas (Morton County) then back to Neosho County (Cities of Galesburg and South Mound again)until death in 1920.
