Sometimes when "widow" is noted on the census the couple is divorced. Was more shameful to be divorced than widowed, and it still indicated that a person was alone. Keep looking you may find him somewhere else too.

Thanks!
The 1900 all checks out, bingo.
I never thought to look for Mary L. Guess I still have some things to learn!
Oddly John R reports being a widow on the 1910 census with the children then disapears. Get this, 1920 & 1930s Lillian M (or Mary l.) remarries and has the children. If he was a widow how is she still alive with the children remarried and he vanishes? Strange!

I am checking the Canales out now...

Crane 5/12 CT PA ME

Mary L = Mary Lillian?
Her age is reported different in each census year.

I searched 1880 census for Maine for anyone born in Spain.
I found a family indexed as Ganales.

I found a Frank P. Ganales born in Spain and next to him on the census page is:

1880 Portland, Maine
George L. Ganales 28 Everyone born in Maine
Eva L. Ganales 24
George F. 3 son
Mary L. 11 daughter

That didn't quite make sense. The enumerator also added the month June for Mary L. as they do when the child was born within the last year. That fits.

I searched Hartford, Ct for Ganales in 1880, but what I found was Canales.

1900 Hartford
Eveline Selden 40 June 1859 ME ME ME
George F.

Prairiemoon,
I am new to researching the Crane line. In fact, it is my mother-in-law, aka Patti, who is a Crane. I am doing this on her behalf. My credentials are most slim being simply one who has long been interested in my genealogy, then head of the 200-member Alexander DNA project, so I understand DNA a bit. Patti is also a Padgett and we got a distant Padgett cousin to test a couple of years ago. Now she has asked me to dig into the Cranes. Her maternal grandmother Mary Charity Crane was b. 25 Oct 1889, d. 2 Nov 1921; she married Henry Grant Padgett 4 Feb 1911, b.2 Nov 1886, d 25 July 1934 in Martin Co., Indiana, buried in St Johns Cemetery, Loogootee, Martin Co., Indiana.

Patti will pay for a 37 marker test for $150 for a cousin to test. I have corresponded with a candidate who an heir of James/Christina who has said he would consider testing after learning more about it. Your uncle you mention would be a candidate for our heir of Richard H. b 1801.

Comparing the DNA of those two would confirm a relationship between James and Richard H. but it would not tell us how exactly they were related. I don’t think there are any tests yet available to determine the precise relationship. That would only come from documentation.

I am hoping to get a few Calvert Co. Crane heirs to chip in to share the cost of some testing. This not only reduces the cost per interested party but is also a way to share the fun and learning. I have been in touch with a head of the Crane DNA Project and he checking to see if any Calvert Co. Cranes have tested but my preliminary exploring says no. It would be nice to know of course if one has already tested.

Since I am new to researching Cranes I am sure we have not yet corresponded but I look forward to doing so, if you would be so kind.

Please write me at rogalex@live.com any time.
I had seen your site you refer to and find it very admirable in many regards.

Sorry about rambling around. I actually attempt to avoid incoherence; it just doesn’t work out sometimes.

Sincerely,
Roger Alexander
Hi Roger!

Im glad to hear that you are interested in doing DNA research. The James and Christina connection has always been theoretical. It will be expensive, since it would require a large amt of markers to compare. It would probably also require more than a few descendents to help identify the separate markers. I have an Uncle that is still living, tho very ill. He is a descendent of Herman Thomas.

Have we compared notes before?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cranefamil...

Then we want to get a male Crane from James and Christina to compare to.

I'm guessing that you saw the 1910 census that listed Adeline Crane with John Barnes as a boarder. If you have access to census records, try searching for Adeline Crane born 1851. There is one listed in 1900 and 1880 with Elizabeth Hamilton, mother. I found Adeline Hamilton with mother Elizabeth and brother Hensley in 1870. I found Elizabeth with a husband Charles Hamilton in 1850. I couldn't find them in 1860. Hope this helps.

Sarah Hill
Joel Crane 1779-1843 m. Harriet Sedgewick
Joel S. Crane 1808-1868 m. Mary (Polly) McCabe
Lucy A. Crane b. 1 May 1840

This seems probable, but I don't know if sources are reliable. I also didn't find anything that indicates that this Elijah Crane participated in the Revolution. There seemed to be a number of men with that name.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.

Thank you for answering my query. We have some more questions: We believe that my friend, Nancy Kelly, descends from the Revolutionary Ancestor: Elijah Crane b. 1746 in Lebonan, CT, who m. Sarah Hill ca 1770. Elijah d. 1818 in Madrid, NY. Their child was Joel b. 1779 m. Harriet Sedgwick in 1802. Do you have any reference for Joel's family? There were several names repeated, making it doubly confusing. Is there a reliable book on this family? We must have proofs for each generation [bible, census, land records, will, probate]. This is for Nancy's DAR membership. Thank you for any help you can provide. betsybutler@cox.net

Caleb Crane (b. 1785)

I am looking for parents of Caleb Crane. I suspect he may be descended from the Cranes who were co-founders of Newark, NJ but have a missing link. What I know is that Caleb had two marriages that took place in Ohio - 1802 in Brown County and 1814 in Butler County. In 1850, his residence was in Jackson, Brown, Indiana. The 1790 census of Washington County, PA may have his father's household listed but I'm not sure and would like to verify this suspicion. I list the surname Treat because Connecticut Colonial Governor Robert Treat was the other co-founder with Mr. Crane of Newark, NJ and their families intermarried to some extent.

I think I may be working on the same Crane lineage but have a gap between New Jersey and Ohio. I have been working backwards from the current generations and the family lore has details indicating they are descended from the Crane family that was part of the founding group that established Newark, NJ along with the Robert Treat (my wife's 8th great grandfather) group from Milford, Connecticut. I have Caleb Crane (my brother-in-law's 3rd Great Grandfather) b. 1785 in Ohio m. Hannah Drollinger. I am needing connections from these folk back to New Jersey - I think I am only missing one or two generations before Caleb to make this work. Any clues anyone can provide would be most helpful.
Those CRANE's from NJ originally came from New Haven, CT where JASPER CRANE was one of the founding fathers there in 1637. He & his sons moved down to NJ and bought 1000 acres and established 4 towns (now cities) in NJ. They were angry because some of the New Haven citizens wanted to give voting rights to non-land owners and they left when they were out-voted on that issue. Some of the Crane's moved back to New Haven later.

'google' Jasper Crane, New Haven, CT" - there is a lot of history about our Crane Family.

I'm descended through Martha Ann Crane who married John M. Church in Habersham Co GA in 1844.

There are still many Jasper Crane's living in NJ and I wonder if they know their heritage.

I'm curious about how you know that George had a sister named Chloe.

I assume you've seen and rejected the Chloe Crane (16) who was living in Great Barrington in 1850 with A.S. and Eliza Crane (both 29). I'm just guessing that Chloe is the sister of A.S. (Albert S.). There is also a Miranda (13). Both girls are reported as having been born in NY. However, if they were historically a Massachusetts family that moved for a time to NY, later census records might list them as having been born in MA. A.S. and Eliza also have a son named George (3).
Pat Hovell

I thought it seemed unlikely that Harriet was born in 1876 and died in 1994. It was actually her daughter, Helen Graham Hinkle, who died in 1994.

If you don't subscribe to Ancestry you can look at the 1880 census for free on the internet. I found Harriet in the 1900 Census in Concord, Elkhart, Indiana.

Charles Crane 55 MA ME ME married 29 years
Lucy 55 NY NY NY
Adelaide 26 NY MA NY
Harriet 24 NY MA NY
Clara 17 NY MA NY
Leland 22 MI MA NY
George 20 MI MA NY

1880 Cambria, Hillsdale, MI
Charles 35
Lucy A. 34
Addie 7
Hattie 5
Leland 3
George 1
Celestia Kelly (cous) 33 NY NY MA
Polly Crane (mother) 70 NY CAN CAN

There is a family tree on Ancestry that shows that Lucy's maiden name was also Crane. (not unlikely--I have several Crane ancestors who married Cranes.) I I suspect that Polly was Lucy's mother and not Charles's. I found Celestia Kelly in Lysander, Onondaga, NY and also in Lysander was a JS and Polly Crane who had a daughter Lucy (age 20 in 1860).
Hope this is helpful.
Pat Hovell

Re: Cranes from Maryland or Indiana

I am a descendant of James Crane and Christiana (Christina) Hall of Calvert Co., MD. I'm having difficulty getting my info downloaded from FTW to a file so I can email it to you. I have quite a bit of research. James was born in MD about 1779 and died 1854 in Indiana. Their children are:
Thomas Crane, Richard Crane (controversial - not believed by all genealogists), John Norval Crane, Nathaniel Crane, Daniel Crane, Susan Crane. I am descended from John Norval Crane who married Abigail Burch. Abigail Burch died 1829 in IN; John Crane died 1888 in Madrid, Perkins Co., Nebraska. John Norval Crane, Jr. was born 1847 in Stanford, IN and died in 1933 in San Dimas, CA.

Some of the family stayed in Martin/Greene/Monroe counties in IN. Some went on to California. I don't know if any stayed in Nebraska when they buried John Norval Crane there.

Some researchers show Richard Crane who married Rebecca Gardner and then Elizabeth Gardner Burch to be a son of James and Christiana. I have not yet been able to prove this connection.

Please let me know how much of this you are interested in as it is quite detailed. I will be happy to help you with it.

I have a couple special requests related to medical heredity. If any Crane descendants have Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor, or Celiac Disease, please let me know. I am just interested in tracing where it originated in our family. Thank you!

I found reference to Chloe in correspondence from George's son Lincoln Crane. She married Elmer Sweet in 1862 and had a family in Michigan. I haven't rejected the Chloe from the 1850 census but can't verify that she is the one from my tree. Thank you for your info.

I seem to have imported to my MILLS family file, your family CRANE as you have it listed. down from Jasper.
However for Azariah, his spouse Abgail TREAT. they do not have a son Moses for him??
Was he Amos Moses?? or ?
I have an Amos CRANE who married Patience MILLS, dau of Joseph MILLS and Sarah of Westfield, Essex Co. NJ USA, who no one else seems to have.
Trying to find Amos' parents.

And I will include your downline from Azariah in that file today. For reference.

I also see that the CRANE BALDWIN DODD SMITH all inter married. Maybe that might be a clue too.
Margaret MILLS married Caleb W BALDWIN, son of Matthias BALDWIN and Rebecca HEDDEN line of New Jersey.

Pat
cw
Note: For Deacon Azariah CRANE who married Mary TREAT they have them of Milford, Hartford, CT. Not New Jersey.

Did Azariah leave CT for New Jersey??? Or is this another comeplete line of CRANE family>>

The Azariah CRANE who was father of Mary CRANE, ORange Essex CO NJ, who married James SMITH, then had children, etc, says he was B: Ca 1626 Scotland.
At least that this what is listed on the many other dbs on rts wb and on www.familysearch.org web site. Input by several other family members/lds members/researchers.
I'm just a *little* late to the party here, but is this still a line of investigation that you are pursuing? Arphaxed is my 4x Great grandfather, so I may be able to give you more information on his descendants.

~Ekko
