HEADLINE: OBITUARIES (ALL EDITIONS)

BURKE, WILLIAM R., 78, died Monday, September 21, 1998 at The Shore
Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, after a short illness. Mr. Burke was born in 1920 in
Norristown, PA. His family then moved to Ventnor City and he attended Atlantic City High
School. In 1941, he graduated from the Massachesutts Institute of Technology with a
Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1941, he married Eleanor Crankshaw of Boston,
and together they had three children. His wife Eleanor died of breast cancer in 1972.
Mr. Burke's entire business career was spent with the Dupont Co., during the course
of which he resided in Woodbury, Wilmington, DE and Dallas and Houston, TX. Mr. Burke
retired from Dupont in 1978. Following his retirement, he resided in Eagles Mere, PA and
Deerfield Beach, FL, with his second wife, Dorothy Davis Burke, who passed away in April of
this year. In Eagles Mere, Mr. Burke served one year as the President of the Eagles Mere
Association, and was a long-time member of the Eagles Mere Country Club. Following
Dorothy's death, Mr. Burke moved to Linwood, where he resided at the time of his death.
Mr. Burke is survived by his two daughters, Eleanor Burke of Reading, MA and
Clare Ardizzone of Ann Arbor, MI; his son William R. Burke, Jr. of Houston, TX, his sister,
Florita Hartnett of Lower Gwynedd, PA, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and
nephews in the families of Joseph and Flor Hartnett, Whitemarsh, PA and John J. and Nancy
Sykes, Margate.
Mass of Christian Burial will be said Thursday, September 24, 1998, 8 P.M. at
Blessed Sacrament Church, Margate, where friends may call from 7 to 8 P.M. Interment Friday
1 P.M. at Eagles Mere Cemetery, Eagles Mere, PA. The family requests Memorial
Contributions to the Donny Sykes Fund of the American Cancer Society, 1601 New Road,
Linwood, NJ 08221.
