Kenneth Owen "Ken" Cranston, 89, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. on Monday, June 15, at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic, IA.
Ken was born on October 27, 1919 in Atlantic, IA and lived in Urbandale, IA for the last 44 years. He had worked for Herman M. Brown for 47 years. His hobbies included construction equipment model building and crafting of bird houses, but his true passion was growing tomatoes.
He is survived by his son, R. Keith of Urbandale; daughter, Rosalyn K. of Des Moines; sister Betty L. Derry of Arcadia, CA; three grandchildren, Kimberly K. (Barry) Von Ahsen and Krista L. (Michael) Hill both of Des Moines and Brian D. Stewart II of Johnston; four great- grandchildren, Matthew A. Hill, Ryan J. Pettit and Taylor R. Pettit all of Des Moines and Jessica M. Stewart of Plainfield, IL. Ken was preceded in death by his beloved and beautiful wife, Betty J. Cranston; parents, George C. and Mayme E. (Hoffman) Cranston; three step- brothers, Earl G., Jesse F., and Archibald M. Cranston; and five sisters and three brothers, Aletha F., Ben C., George C. "Dutch", Perle E. Cranston, Gertrude C. Frohwein, Leona C. Knight, Rhoda M. Welton and Addie M. Barnholdt.
Memorials may be made to the Taylor House Hospice.
