Hi Diana,
This is a shot in the dark. But I see you have Indiana Reeds in your research. I am looking for information on Margaret (Maggie) and John Reed. They had a daughter, Florence, born April 1872 and a son, John, born in 1874. I have conflicting information regarding whether Florence and John were born in IN or OH.
I have reason to believe Maggie (not sure about John) was a member of the Moravian Church. She was born in Pennsylvania.
Florence was my GGrandmother.
If your records show Florence or John born in IN, or any ties of this family to the Moravian church, that would be a huge lead for me to follow up on!
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.
Pam

My name is Melvin Holmes, email address of melkaren1@yahoo.com. My mother was Mary Ellen Crater (Holmes) who passed in 1993. I would very much enjoy conversing with you either by phone or email. The above email address is that of my daughter in law.

Grandpa Crater died in 1965 and his wife, Vella, in 1985. I have quite a bit of information that I could provide as I am also updating my tree.

Don't know if your friend is still researching Wilbur Crater b. Nov. 31, 1883 at Dover, NJ. He descended from Daniel B., Tunis, William, Moritz and Moritz b. 1703 in Germany. Wilbur married Fredrica "Rica" Lawrence in 1909 and they were parents to 6 children including Donald Verne b. Aug. 31, 1920. His line is traced in the book "The Descendents of Moritz Creeter (1703 - 1772); Craters from New Jersey" written by me in 2003 and placed in several genealogy libraries in NJ and around the country. Let me know if your friend has specific questions about her ancestors.
Best, Harold C.

Hi there,
I am in Indiana also. My Essex line from Hope, IN (my mother's maiden name) goes back to a Lewis Essex who was born in NC. His sister Catharina Essex married a John (greter) Crater. Catharina Crater died at age 95 in Winston Salem, NC (b. 1 Jul 1800 Stokes Co., NC, died 11 Aug 1895 in Forsyth Co., NC). They were married 25 Nov 1824 in NC.

I have John's parents as Jacob Greter and his mother as Maria Frey.

I have lots of hooks into the Moravian church with other names also. In skimming the Crater line, I see an Elizabeth Crater (15 Jan 1787) who married a Johann Philip rominger. Romingers also end up in my family but I haven't worked on that line much.

My Bartholomew Co IN names include Essex, Rothrock, Hitchcock, Reed, Fetter, Zeigler, Carter, ect.

Diana

I am interested in anyone who is doing research on the surname Crater, Greter, Grater from North Carolina. My grandfather was Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Crater from Yadkin County area. My ancesters came down from Pennsylvania (orginally from Germany). I know we also had some ancesters who moved to Hope, Indiana. I live in Indiana and plan to visit the old church in Hope. I do get to North Carolina quite often and would love to hear from anyone following this family line. My mother's maiden name is Crater. Look forward to hearing from anyone with this name in your ancestry.

Hello Richard:

I do not have a date or place for Hester Crater and Martin Bunn's marriage. I guess the year to be about 1787 or so. They may have married in what is now the Fairmount Presbyterian Church (Martin's parents were buried in that churchyard), and apparently their records from before 1828 are lost (a sermon delivered in 1876 claims this, at least).

Martin may have been raised in Chester, Morris Co., but he evidently removed to Somerset Co. He applied for a tavern license in Somerset Co. in 1795. He bought land near Lamington in 1811, where I think they lived until their deaths.

I do not have a Lawrence in my Bunn family. There were apparently two different branches in this area. Did your Lawrence originate from England? My Bunns are likely from Germany, with names like Coonrad and Johannes.

I'd love to get your Crater information. My email is jennifer@anklesaria.com.

I did some Rev War research the last time I was in Salt Lake City, but I did not pursue the Craters on that trip. I'll see what I can dig up on the next round, and I'll let you know.

Jennifer

There is quite a lot about the Crater family in the New Jersey State Archives, including a family Bible. Yes, he owned quite a lot of land on the Hunterdon/Morris line and his house is still there. The last time I visited his gravesite there was a veterans marker and flag next to his gravestone, but I have never found a confirming record that he served in the Revolution. If you'll send me your direct e-mail address, I'll be happy to send what I have on the Crater family both in New Jersey and in Freinsheim, their place of origin in the Palatinate.

Do you have Hester and Martin's date and place of marriage? And do you have anything on the Bunn family? I am also descended from the Bunn family through Elizabeth, the daughter of Lawrence Bunn, who married Stephen Dean.

Richard

I descend from Morris' daughter Hester, who married Martin Bunn. Thanks for the years of death for all the siblings.

What documentation do you have on this Crater family? If this family attended what is now the Fairmount Presbyterian Church, I understand that church records prior to 1828 are lost.

Did Morris serve in the Revolution? Francis Crater Jr., U.S. Army's 32nd Infantry Regiment, of Barberton, Ohio. He will be buried Oct. 21 in Akron, Ohio.
From Nov. 27-Dec. 1, 1950, the U.S. Army's 31st Regimental Combat Team, to which Crater's regiment was temporarily assigned, fought elements of the Chinese People's Volunteer Forces in the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea. After intense fighting, the 1/32 Infantry was forced to abandon its position, leaving its dead behind. Regimental records compiled after the battle indicate that Crater was killed in action on Nov. 28, 1950.

Between 2002 and 2003, two joint U.S.-Democratic People's Republic of North Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), excavated two, adjacent mass graves on the eastern shore of the Chosin Reservoir believed to be burial sites of U.S. soldiers from the 31st RCT. The team found human remains for eight individuals and other material evidence, including Crater's identification tags.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.
For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

George Grant Johnson and 3sons are found in 1910 census with Amos Crater and family
in 1920 Perry and George are still there with Amos their grandfather. Leland went to service and died there. This is the family I am really trying to find but interested on Crater also.
Sara is the daughter of Amos M Crater and Mary B Harper. She was born March 9, 1881 married George Grant Johnson had 4 children. Leland Chase, Perry A, George, and maybe T.M. last one unknown. she died March 24, 1908 and is buried at Friedland Moravian Graveyard.
In 1910 I found Grant and 3 sons living with her parents Amos and Mary. In 1920 I found Grant elsewhere but 2 of the sons still living with the Grandparents Amos and Mary.
Leland Chase went to Navy and died Aug 1925 and is also buried at Friedland. Haven't had any luck with the other 2 known children other than they went to Navy, and 1 unknown children.
Does anyone know the parents of Amos M Crater?
He is listed in 1880 census with John and Cathrine Crater but John and Catherine are not old enough to be his parents. Amos is 21, John is 32, Cathrine is 30. Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated. Have hit a brick wall with Johnson so thought maybe searching out the wife might get me somewhere.

I do believe that there is a family connection to both the Boon family and the Crater family although
I haven't got it all sorted out yet.. My great Aunt Martha Amanda Long married John Mc Nair and they had two daughters, Cora and Ella. Ella later married a Lemuel Boon. I have nothing further on the Boon family at this point. Would be interested in sharing notes.
My aunt Ollie Mae Long married Edgar Mathias Crater, they had several children, one was Muriel born in 1897 so this would have been in the same time frame. I haven't yet placed Eveline but then I don't have the full Crater line completed yet either. They were all in Hillsdale County at that time.
